Since this has hit the news, I would expect someone to have some explaining to do to his chain of command.
"Lawrence Lenahan, a 26-year-old Air Force captain
Especially if he has any permanent injury or misses duty because of his injury.

Especially since it made the news.
Yep, that smiling fool is about to come across official reprimand, non judicial punishment, and possible courts martial for that little stunt.
Considering the USAF is over strength in some numbers, he just may find himself dismissed from service. They've been commissioning and honorably discharging graduates from the US Air Force Academy the past couple of years due to no open slots for them in the USAF..... certainly no big deal to drum out someone who breaks the UCMJ so publicly.

Why the he** would the airforce punish him for participating in the Pamplona bull run? Presumably he was on leave.

Attempted destruction of Government property. Your body does not belong to you when you join the service. It belongs to the government.
You can be punished for any tattoo's you get after you join too.

:rofl yeah right.

Yeah right. If they can't see the tat you're probably ok, but if you put one on your face or something that can be seen that the military doesn't like they will punish you.
I had a buddy that was worried he was going to get an article 15 because he got a severe sunburn his last day home on leave. They didn't, but I do know that he bucked up and didn't whine about it either.

its been almost 10 years since I retired so things may have changed but Tattoos were ok upto 98. Only around 94-95 did I start hearing some noises about tatoos that were visible might cause problems.
OTH I did hear of people (2 or 3 in 20 years) getting reprimands for sunburns but only if they were serious enough to cause you to miss a significant amount of work or if your commander was a hardcase.

I had heard this used as a threat especially when discussing seatbelt and helmet usage in the air force
What happens to this LT depends on the circumstances of his participation, his status, and his command. The article didnt say if he was regular, guard or reserve. At the very least he will probably have to go to a medical board to see if he is fit for duty. He'll probably also be safe if he has enough leave saved up for his recouperation. If his injury affects his deployment status he could have some problems

Well he got it right where he deserved it

I heard of several reservists in my brigade that got Article 15s for getting super sunburned at the start of a summer camp in activities not related to military duty. At least I think it was article 15s, or maybe it was just a scare rumor.

I had a buddy NJP'd for being drunk on the beach in daytona and getting hit by a speeding motorist. tats were ok though.

Please note that I said you CAN be punished. It's unlikely, but its possible.
Once you sign the dotted line, you're Government property. to all those that served!
