Title: P-38 sticks, I summon you!
Post by: HoseNose on July 19, 2007, 08:12:48 PM
Yes, I've tried the P-38, and though the Hog's still my main plane, I simply find the twin-boomer awesome.
Any advice on flying it? I've noticed the La-7's and F4U's (The F4U, which is both faster and can avoid overshoots) kill me a lot, especially at co-alt. Tips anyone?

Just get better.... ACM is the same in all planes. Do what you'd do when you're flying the hog.

Roger that Fianna. thanks. Any Fighter Groups or P-38 trainers I could look up?

Murdr is a TRAINER and a pretty good 38 stick, but don't tell him I said so  ;)

Murdr and Silat are both 38 pilots and on the training staff.  If you're in the MA you can tag along with the 80th FG  if you'd like just don't expect to make it home in one piece. :)

One tip since I am a sucky 38 pilot but this helped me!
If you are scaling your stick....don't.
Of course this is IMHO but I CAN tell a HUGE difference when my stick is scaled and when it's not.

What disadvantages would scaling be to a P-38J pilot exactly?

Well with my setup (Saitek X-52) the plane just doesn't respond as well at any speeds, and especially at slow speeds.
Also be sure to turn combat trim off if you have it enabled.

No problems with my X52, scaling and the 38.

None, absolutely none.  Scaling your stick will allow you to ride the edge of the envelope much better, which is a must in the P-38.

Im assuming that you are flying a 38J? Don't bother with it.......its identical to the L except it rolls slower and accelerates a hair's width better. If you want to mix it up in a 38 though the G's the way to go. Fair warning, the G's cockpit needs some getting used to...... ;) :aok

Thanks so much all!

I do like the P-38G, don't get me wrong, but I don't feel so 'comfortable' in it. It's lik sticking me in an La-7. The plane's great, but for some reason I just don't feel great in it. But, yea, I'll fly the P-38L. I just thought it was way too heavy to move like a J. Also, many J pilots I've seen on the forums state that the L feels a little heavy for them and that they stick with the J's and G's.

I used to feel the exact same way...J seems to have a slight edge in a knife fight
....but a little more stick time in the L and once you get used to the stuff you can do with the amazing roll rate (compared to the J anyway) it kinda grows on you. Plus being able to carry rockets without worrying about drag penalties later is an added bonus.
But yeah, I do like the J's looks. P38's look irresistible in green:aok

Bah! The J and Ls cockpit need getting used to, not my uber G. :t

It DOES turn amazingly well. Turned with a Spit 16 on quite a few occasions, but I'd prefer the looping and hanging power of the WEP J's and L's.

Also, which J and which L do we have? J-15 and L-5, right? Not sure.. I'm not the smartest P-38 junky... I don't even know their service entrance years :huh

General consensus is that we have a J-15 and an L-1.  L's entered combat service in roughly October 44 in both the ETO and Pacific.

J-10s were the main ride for the ETO 38 groups from December 44 on.  Most of the 9th AF groups that came in May 44 had J-10s to start.

I was considering that, but too bad I don't think I'll ever get bored of the 38 and the the F4U's my main plane.

However, I totally do respect the P-47, I just don't know anything about it :)

hah. those 8 fifties pack a punch.. I prefer them over 2 hispanos any day. well. back to the topic.

I've heard the P-38 is an awesome vertical fighter due to the counter rotating props. Would I therefore use vertical against the likes of the Corsair? I mean, knowing the Hog, you can't make her overshoot in a P-38. So what can we do?

The P-38 is magnificent to fly and I've bagged a few ace sorties but how do the best 38 sticks fly? Close in with angles and flips like the Hog, or extensions and loops? Or both? I'm just having a bit of trouble :p

Me too, I can never get someone off my tail, unless they completely blow it, and this is starting to get really frustrating as I'm on the verge of being able to land 2-3 kills consistently (in 8 player).  So, how do I get someone off my tail?  Let's say d400-800 coE or greater?

Thanks

I'm by far not a "best" 38 stick, but it has been my main ride for the past 3 or 4 months since I was very determined to learn how to fly and be successful in it. Ill give you some advice I have found that works for me that you can try.

You can fly the 38 both ways, depending on the situation. One of the best defensive and offensive maneuvers that has saved my bacon numerous times is the spiral climb. The direction of the climb is important, since you can't outclimb a spit16 or 109K straight up, you can spiral climb to the right against the torque of their engines and watch them stall under you, giving you some options. The first couple times you use it you will die for one reason or another, but once you get the hang of it, and when and how much flap to put down to seemingly "float" above them, it is invaluable. I have stall fought spit16's, la7s, niks, 109's etc. in the vertical using this maneuver with great success. I may not have won every engagement but I don't die very often. Timing, good gunnery for brief snapshots, and good enemy energy assessments are essential for success.

Just something I found works well in a 38. Try it out and see if it works for you.

Seems like some good advice. I'll try it Lancer, thanks!

Maybe learning it will teach me how to do it properly in the F4U as well, as I've seen other F4U-1A's hang me with the same maneuver. Of course, it all depends on energy and the P-38's counter props let it hang both Tempest and Spitfire alike.

At any rate, I've never successfully done it unless they were really low on E.
