i have a question for all french speakers please.
how would i write... "this is not a wave." in french.
(as in, a wave in the ocean)
i am making a photo montage that is inspired by a magritte painting witch is entitled "this is not a pipe."

Though not fluent in French by any stretch of the imagination I do know enough that I beleive that phrase to be correct.

perhaps..but the painting that i am paying homage to is
cici n'est pas une pipe...rather than ce... so i have concerns you see.
perhaps a frog will roll around here sometime soon and prove your theory correct.
that would be nice.
:)
(perhaps i should have titled the thread FREE CHEESE...heh)

I took a french class last year but we only got through greetings, telling time, introducing, asking stuff so i just speak a WEEE bit of french sorry
if i remember correctly "est" is "is"
you put "ne" before the main verb and "pas" after it to mean "not" (take the 'e' off "ne" if the first letter of the main verb is a vowel and put a ')
i believe "à" is "a" (alt 133 to get the weird A symbol)
sorry i can't help you with THIS and WAVE but putting this together you get
THIS n' est pas à WAVE - hope it helps a little

i thought this board was crawling with french peoples? what gives?

Both would work. I'd need the context or your intended nuance of inflection to be 100% SURE but otherwise they're the same.
99% sure you ought to use ceci if you're recalling the pipe painting/caption. Ce could be prefered in certain very artsy split-hairing nuances that somehow resonate very well with your particular painting, but now we're down in the micropercentages scale.
That'll be 499.99€ and a hot canadian blonde.

Pardonnez-moi monsieur, mais ce ne'st pas une vague :)

Frenchy here.
Your translation is good. It's indeed "Ceci n'est pas une vague".
This = ceci
is not = n'est pas
a wave = une vague
Now i want to see your photo montage, once it's done...
