Title: Vampi - Ploesti - 3yr old thread
Post by: lzt on July 21, 2007, 05:30:01 AM
I don't know how I ran across this board after so many years, probably a bit of nostalgia... ok it was definitely a bit of nostalgia. People from the community I was a part of so long ago are still part of the community today.

I did a search for my old Air Warrior CPID (cpid, is that right?) and found it was a small part of a massive thread, albeit from three years ago.  I did check to see if those old time posters were still active, and I think the likes of culero (clro) Tiff (+tiff), and =B17= are still active here. The fact that there was a thread about the Ploesti scenario was very surprising.

Reading about =GB='s posts about "Why the Bettied died" was also entertaining. Part of "Why the Betties died" as I recall is that during that entire scenario the P-40's absolutely dominated the Zeroes, as in history Chennault's boys did.

Absolute great time.  Hacka blew fuse when we hit a target he wasn't expecting and they failed to intercept us.

The mass 38 raid to replay the June 44 raid turned out almost exactly like what I'd read about it.

The most massive furball ever.  No clue how I survived.

Good memories

+Tiff from those days.  CorkyJr now :)

Still have a screenshot from that mission where we weren't hit.  Tension was sky high waiting for it.

The screenshot shows the moment the flak started going off over the target.  I literally jumped in my chair after being startled by it.  And I was just a 51 escort pilot :)

I remember the drop was perfect and there was a huge debate about it being impossible to put all the bombs on target that well.  Screenshots of the target proved that they all went in.

Oh how I'd love to go back and fly that one again :)

The funny part is that there was one scout pilot in a FW190 who saw us as we ingressed to the target, and called out the dogs.

But their command team kept the dogs home because they thought we were a feint, instead of a strike, LOL! :lol

I'd worked up a sweat first expecting them to find us, then the combat that would ensue. The feeling of elation after the drop when I gave the formation the order to descend 3K/min at full throttle to egress was palpable (given the knowledge that if they weren't there in force already there was no way they could engage).

Dan, you would have loved another mission even more. During the Sicily scenario we hit the high-point target that pre-event consensus said could not be hit. It was even better than this. They were there waiting as we approached Indian territory, but their entire force "bit" on the bait - we sent a large group of Ju-88s on a long dive ahead of the main formation, just out of dot range. Their interceptors all followed them down in a feeding frenzy. We LOAO as we sailed by overhead OTW the "unhittable" target (a convoy).

That's also the mission where a pilot bailed accidentally after the drop, but his chute remained in formation as we RTB'ed. Anyone who recalls the scream a bailer made in AW will know what we had to listen to all the way home  :D

Too much fun, back in the day, eh?
