Title: AT&T post break-up history
Post by: Chairboy on July 21, 2007, 08:52:26 AM
Found a great chart that describes the paths taken by the various chunks of Ma Bell after the breakup.  It's interesting to note how much has re-congealed:

The worst casualty was of course Bell Labs...  That place almost singlehandedly created the information age, and it will never be replaced.  Bill Gates likely could have branched off something like it, but it seems like he'd rather do the charity thing than save the human race.

yes the loss of bell labs is easily the single worst hit that this obscure judge inflicted upon us.

there are other ways we have been affected and people are not aware of.  I spend a considerable sum each year litigating damages that are the result of our hitting buried services in people's easements.  I'm just one contractor who works in three counties expand that to every county in every state and there is a significant amount of litigation occuring for damage that was previously taken care of as a matter of course prior to the break up.  my costs are of course passed on to the end users as I'm sure the all concerned do as well.

It's a pretty chart alright. I just couldn't make heads or tails of it.

The top is the 1984 breakup of Ma Bell.  The bottom is today, and in between is where the assets went during the past 23 years, the companies that were formed, then rolled into other companies, etc.
