Title: VOX issue
Post by: Oogly50 on July 22, 2007, 05:05:15 PM
Whenever I use VOX I get a SERIOUS frame-rate drop.  98% of the time I lose host connection.

When it DOES work it will lag for about 5 seconds.  Stop, and then I have to press the VOX button every 3 minutes or else I'll lose host connection if I press it again.

what's up?  I NEED my VOX!

Has this just recently started happening? What changed about when this started happening?
Alternatively, are you running a dedicated soundcard or the one on the motherboard? If you dont have a dedicated soundcard, get one.
How much RAM do you have?
Are you running a custom sound pack?
Also try turning sound acceleration down in the Direct X control panel applet.

This has happened since I was able to use VOX

I'll try the things you said though...

How do I Check my RAM, turn down my direct X acceleration, and how do I check if I have a dedicated sound card or not... this was my dad's old computer so I don't know WHAT he put on here... :D

open up a command shell [start] -> [run] then type cmd.exe and click [open]

then type dxdiag /t C:\log.txt

then attach c:\log.txt to a reply to this thread.

I've had some sort of the same problem...my computer screen freezes for about 1/2 second, and makes me warp when I use VOX.

Just a guess, but it sounds like you folks have AC97 sound chips on the motherboard.  These devices offer virtually no hardware to help with sound and require the CPU to do all the work.

The hardware acceleration is a misnomer in these cases.  It really is just altering the priority of the sounds needing to be played.  The higher the priority the more the CPU is required to stop what it is doing to handle the sounds.

Set the acceleration to basic (3/4) and this reduces the priority enough to help smooth/balance the CPU usage out.

Another cause could be the sound chip sharing an IRQ with another high demand device, such as a network or video card.  Again, reducing the priority will allow the other interrupt service routines to get serviced faster.

Title: VOX issue

9200SE?  Ok,...you need to set the game's "Msximum Texture Size" to 256 in the "Video Settings" as well.

You are also handicapped with an AC97 sound device.  Which means you really need to turn down the psuedo-hardware acceleration slider to 3/4.

Also, you really should not try using any custom sound packs.

How do I set the acceleration to basic...?

To turn acceleration down:

1, [Start] -> [Run] type "dxdiag" and click [open]
2, click the 'Sound' tab
3, half-way down, move the slider one or two notches.

See if that improves things. Dont expect miracles tho.

The good news is upgrading some hardware will give you some real gains. So from cheapest to most expensive upgrades try one/some/all of the following:
 - Firstly: Get a dedicated PCI sound card. Just get a cheap basic/entry-level soundblaster will improve things! These normally are very cheap.

Then: Upgrading with another 512Mb RAM will be a cheap and effective way to improve game performance. This will give you 768Mb RAM which also improve things lots. Improvement will be not just games either, this will give your PC a new lease of life - it will feel like a new PC. 256Mb is far far too little for XP, IMO.

 - Lastly, try upgrading the video board. This is where you can make huge gains in frame-rates and can spend lots, but you dont necessarily have too. Pick yourslf up a 2nd-hand cheap Radeon 9800Pros for $80 or nvidia 6600GTs etc cheaply.

But replace that built-in soundboard first, then get some more RAM before buying new video cards.
