Title: Harry Potter 7
Post by: eskimo2 on July 24, 2007, 09:37:51 PM
Sound Off When You’ve Finished
(Or call me names if you think Harry Potter is stupid)

My wife and I had been trading off reading and today I pretty much hogged the book and finished it off.

It’s a great book; probably the best of the series and had a great ending.

My oldest daughter is seven and has read book 1.  She’s dying to read the rest; we’ll let her read #2 when she turns 8 in a few weeks.

On Friday we dressed up the kids and drove North to Hudson, Ohio where a Harry Potter book release festival was taking place throughout the entire downtown.

A typical crowd at the festival on one of many streets.

You have three darling kidos and I would not even think o dissing  you on something your family obviously enjoys.

Am I a Harry Potter fan? No, I find seriously boring, at least the movie I tried to watch, but my oldest grandson loved it. That was enough for me ;)

Finished it around 0530 Sunday morning.  I thought it was a great book, especially the way things worked out at the end.

It's a long story.

I've always made it a point to educate myself about what my children were involved in.

When my son was 6 or 7 my mom used to read Harry Potter books to him and I decided to give them a look.  After book 1 I was hooked because Rowling really has the ability to capture what my mentality was at that age.  I could see myself throughout all the books as he aged dealing with the things that Harry had to deal with.

I bought the book on Saturday morning and finished it on Saturday night.

IMHO it's the best book of the series.  I'm just sorry it had to end.

JK Rowling and thank you for many many many hours of entertainment.

I have it. I LOVED the other books, read them in the first few days, but I cannot bring myself to show the least bit of interest in this one. I dont know if its just because I now have a life, or because the writing style has obviously changed, but I read one chapter and have never really felt like picking it up again.

Pick it up again; you won't be able to put it down once you get to the big gay orgy scene.

I found it the most disappointing of the series, it didn't answer the questions it said it would except for a couple, and I feel the epolouge was rushed. It was great in what it did answer, but there were so many things she promised to tell us, that she didn't.  I'll probably read it some more, but for now, I'm a bit sad there won't be anymore.  Perhaps she will change her mind? Doubt it, but I can wish.

Mensa180,

The author, in a pre release interview, said she was tentatively planning to revisit that particular "world", just not with potter. That may explain the "holes" in the epilogue.

I think Dumbledore's Army is the key.  I could see a series that takes place at Hogwarts over the period of the year that Book 7 happens, or picks up immediately after that and follows those young'ns to graduation.

This is assuming, of course, that Ms. Rowling can find a reinforced wheelbarrow strong enough to cart additional crates of hundred dollar bills back to her house from her publisher.

I just got all 7 books in audio book form so that my wife can listen to them.
My son loves them and he told her so much about them she wants to try them.

hmmm amazing folks get that excited about a book. Didn't see anyone in Texas doing that although somewhere they might have.

Don't get me wrong.... the movies seem like great shows for the kids which means the whole family can go.

My wife and I decided long ago that our children would not be allowed to watch any HP movie till they had read the book first. I really think that these are the best children’s/teen books ever. Even as an adult I can’t recall better books. I encourage you to read the books for yourself; you will enjoy it so much more.

I plowed through HP7 and was done by Sunday night.  Loved it.  A great way to end an amazing series. :aok

Eskimo, keep in mind that some of the folks here think it's fashionable to crap on the HP books.  "It's just a gawdamned kids book" they'll mumble, while rocking back and forth on their porches and typing away on their old Compaq laptop.  The plastic tumbler of Jack Daniels w/ ice will sit on the porch railing next to them, sweating in the humidity while they angrily peck away at their keyboards, telling you how nothing that's been published since the Turner Diaries has been worth a lick of spit, and they don't need something like a "book" sliding around in their Camaro later on when they're running some "dumb ricer" off the road near old man Jenkin's farm.  It might get caught under the brake pedal or some other damnfool thing right when they need it, and damned if some overpaid county coroner is going to tell anyone their body was recovered along with a book about "wizards and fairies".

:D

Yea, Chairboy,

My first instincts usually are to shun anything popular.  I’m not interested in what’s hip or new, heck we just got our first cell phone.  I’d probably be all over pooping on HP and thought it all sounded pretty stupid till I picked up book 1 to see what the fuss was all about.  Actually, my wife started reading it first and said it was really good.  We tend to like the same kinds of things, (except I like slapstick and explosions a lot more).  Anyway, I understand the tendency, but if you’ve ever enjoyed reading anything, you’ll probably enjoy these books.

Except the big gay orgy at the end…  I don’t think I really want to see that.
What was HK Rowling thinking?  These books were originally intended for children and I’m sure most book 7 readers will be in their teens and have already been exposed to all kinds of kinky weirdness in the media, but man, that’s some pretty extreme stuff!  I guess maybe she figured that since this was the end of the series, she’s going to sell a zillion books no mater, she’s already the richest woman in Britain, why not go out with a bang?

What was HK Rowling thinking?

I'll never look at a magic wand again the same way, not to mention reading what Mad-Eye did with his prosthetic....

I read it, and really liked it.  However, I had a couple problems with it.

Was Stan Shunpike a death eater after all?  What was up with all the casual usages of Unforgiveable Curses by the good guys?

Other then that, I loved it.

The "good guys" used Imperius quite a bit, I guess it must have been one of those "by any means necessary" situations, I'd be interested to know what the repercussions of that would be.  Perhaps the ethical dilemma would be a mature subject for a followup book...

I think Stan Shunpike was falsly accused.

As far as using the Unforgiveable Curses; it was war: kill or be killed.

But Stan Shunpike was acting with the Death Eaters near the beginning.  Was he imperiused?  Was he always a Death Eater?  Did his false imprisonment drive him to become a death eater?

Eagler, please explain just why on God's green earth you have access to an image like that?

You had to actually put effort into obtaining it, and it is forever imprinted on your hard drive.

Finished it early Monday morning. It would have been sooner, but it was Mrs Wololey's birthday on Saturday and she insisted on being entertained and generally paid attention to (went to see the Wicked musical - very good if anyone's interested).

Book was very good, but she didn't half leave it open for further books if JK ever feel the need to further expand her bank balance.

As well as curses, I spotting a few unforgiveable cusses sneaking in there - did Ron not call Malfoy a bar-steward at one point?

I think Stan Shunpike was used.  He was put into Azkaban by the Ministry, and probably imperiused during the prison break.  Just a guess, but for him to be a legit death eater, the incompetent MoM would have had to have been right about something.  :D

'Harry saw the strangely blank face of Stan Shunpike'

I'd say that he was imperioused

As to the unforgivable curses my guess is that when the ministry fell it became a 'this is war' situation.

Interesting discussion she devil and I had today.  Did Harry kill Voldemort or did Voldemort kill himself?

My daughter and her friends were there at midnight to get the book.  She read it the first night.  I read it Sunday night.

Very enjoyable and it did tie up the loose ends.  I think she finished the series the only way she could have to allow for new readers to enjoy the series.  She ends it with hope and that's a good thing.

To be honest my kids loved the books but i didn't have the time or interest when they came out.  They bugged me long enough that I finally read the first one and then kept going.  I very much have enjoyed them, much to my surprise.  And I've re-read them all at least once.

If it's getting kids to read, it can't be bad.

Actually, it's neither.  Voldemort's wand killed him.  Voldemort had the Elder Wand, but he never earned it.  So, when it really counted, the wand backfired on him.
