Anyone remember that web site that shows you what processes are safe to shut off?

shut off the ones that take up space... that's what I do.  Usually if they take up space they can't do harm to your computer.  ONLY the stuff that takes up space.  You're CPU % should be around 2%, if it goes higher than 10 you usually have spyware if you don't have anything running.

This is just wrong.

In a properly configured system, Windows XP CPU usage boucnes like a heartbeat between 0 and 1 (on occasion 2) percent.  Anything above 3 percent is very bad for gameplay.

In a properly configured Windows XP system, there is normally about 19 to 21 processes listed.

Skuzzy's Hint's and Tip's guide is excellent and should be followed.

If you are unsure about something, or it isn't specifically mentuioned in his guide, you can go into the task manager and see what processes are running.  Then google the process name and you should find a few sites that have info about it and whether it is a legitimate/necessary process.

You can do the same thing for figuring out services you are running to figure out which can be stopped. You can even change them from automatic start up to manual start up (for instance your AV or firewall SW).

ProcessLibrary (http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/) is cool too.

Try FSAutoStart. You can configure it to shut nearly everything (services and apps) down, then run and application on a double-click of an icon. When the app shuts down, FSAutoStart reinstates all the applications and services it shutdown again.

Very cool. Just remember to at least leave windows audio running ;)

Just a note, when you mouse over each process or application running, FSAutostart recommends an action for it based on blackviper in the right-hand window, e.g. leave running, shut down & restart, etc.
