Here you go Goth, these are from my opinion. I know this is gonna get hijacked, but these are my 5.
1. Paul Kossoff
2. George Harrison (only Duane could play "slide" better)
3. Alex Lifeson (lives in the shadows of Neil and Geddy)
4. Vernon Reid
5. Bill Nelson

"My Opinion".
-
Not that other opininos are not worth mentioning, I think this thread needs them cause I actually don't agree with my squaddie. For instance, I do think Harrison and Lifeson have been recognized by fans and peers alike, therefore in my opinion not under rated.
-
Harrison was more "notorious" for songwriting, not his "musicianship".
-
Mark Knopfler
-
Tommy Emmanuel
Mark Knopfler
Eric Johnson
Gary Moore
Jeff Beck (though he is more popular than the others)
-
lets see most under rated ... hmmm hell ...I'll just put my list of Guitar Gods .
All of these guys dont just play ... They Are the Guitar !
Buddy Guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39W46dLA8BI)
He taught everyone how to play ...
Peter Frampton (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obhs2LY-VVY)
Gary Moore N BB King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyuSDajZTNo)
Donald "Buck" Roeser /Blue Oyster Cult (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V7KPZtcOVQ) Not the best recording , but really shows His magical talent.
Brian Setzer /Stray cats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LsVvajNut1o)
Of course I drool over Page,Hendrix,SRV,Clapton,Mayer,Dimebag,Young ,ect ... the list goes on and on

I would beg to differ with you most honored associate. It was While My Guitar Gently Weeps that people stood up and noted his talent on the strings.
I will agree with others when they state Junior Brown and Donald Roeser....however Mark Knopfler and most certainly Frampton and Beck are noted by fans and peers.

But Clapton played the solos. Harrison, until he went "solo", lived in the shadows of John and Paul. We all know how much of a control freak Paul is.
I agree that Beck, Frampton and Knopfler are not "under rated".
-
Steve Howe
Steve Hackett
-
Clapton has a tendency to get "Sloppy" at times ...
I have to agree Harrison always brought in the Gods to play "As my guitar gently weeps"
-
Hands down THE most under rated guitarist ever is Johnny Winter.

gilmore

Robin Trower

I've been amazed in the presence of many great guitarists playing live, but as you say (hands down) never as much as the time I went to one of his shows.

He was in King Crimson. Hardly underrated as that band nowadays, would almost be considered a "supergroup".
-
the guy can bend a note a full octave and not break a string. you can hear this but it is mind boggling to see it. damn what people say, gilmore is by far the most underrated rock guitarist of all time (yes I'm given to hyperbole) :D

I think he means as solo artist.
-
I understand but ANYONE coming out of King Crimson isn't underrated. "Bridge of Sighs" alone is cause for him NOT to be underrated. Again, this is my opinion.
-
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
====
Eric Clapton played lead guitar on this song.
-
I don't think you could consider Gilmour in any way under rated. He's viewed in the guitar world/community as a living 'tone God'. I was watching Classic Albums lastnight on VH1 and it was covering 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and Gilmour's playing and writing was just amazing to behold. He's one of those players that can get more from one note than most guitar players get on an entire song.
As for sloppy, it can be worked into an incredible style as well. SRV was probably the king of sloppy but he controlled it into an amazing technique that's extremely hard to copy.
-
Frank Zappa
Duane Allman (King of slide guitar)
Andy Powell
Peter Greene
Tony Iommi
-
How about Frank Marino ?
http://www.mahoganyrush.com/
-
I'll also throw in Ry Cooder, my undisputed king of slide guitar.
-
I don't ever recall Robin Trower being in King Crimson. He got his start in Procol Harum.
-
If your Guitarist is NOT considered underated then........
Blame Karaya

oppps wrong,Robert Fripp was in KC, trower was in Procol harem{sp}
Fripp is simply the most amazing guitarist I've seen, followed closely by Jimmy Page.NOTE,that I've seen
BB king
Chet Atkins
Les Paul
I've not had the pleasure of seeing....
Hmmm guess I should of read the whole thread.......Doh
-
In my opinion....:)
Once in every great while God grants a person or persons to ability to be a "Perfect" band that will turn out "perfect" songs.
That being said Pink Floyd is one of those bands. I do think Gilmore is underated to a degree as well because anytime I have been around guys talking about guitar greats, everybody else is mentioned except Gilmore. When his name is thrown out then its either "oh yeah that dude...." Or " I have heard of him, but not real familiar with his stuff." Part of that being the way it is though was I think due to the fact that the members of Pink Floyd as a whole never drew alot of attention to themselves in their performances. They mostly wanted everybody else to enjoy the tunes and watch the light show and stuff.
I also think Lindsey Buckingham is also underrated. He's a fairly technical player. Not many people play their geeter like a banjo. He also has good sound out of his stuff. Nice full rich kinda stuff. Granted that is more a personal kinda prefrence thing.
-
Best and most underrated guitarist ever! :)
-
Under rated..
Here's one.
Reb Beach, from the hair bands Winger and Whitesnake.
Not really know to be a shredder because of those bands, but he's actually got some really good grooves, and soloing ability.
Not a Jason Becker, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, or Alex Scholnek, but really good none the less.
-
Blind Mellon Chittlin.....
Wait he was a Harmonic.... never mind.
Cheech Marin
Tommy Chong
:aok

there is a whole global group of nobodies on youtube that could play any well known guitarist into the dirt. Thats the trouble with being a really "capable, soulful, rocking or classical" musician of any sort. There are just too many humans on board that are awsome. It lowers the bar quite a bit. I have not been impressed by anyone in years and I have seen/heard some truly great playing. It (musicianship skill) just doesnt impress me anymore.
-
Can't believe none of you mentioned Ian Bairnson of The Alan Parsons Project.

I don't know of anyone else who has such a distinctive sound, I can always spot his work.

I made a mistake. I apologize. He was in Procol harem.
I'm only human. Regardless, Trower is WELL-Known.

I cannot agree with this. But it is your opinion.
-
And I too will concede that Clapton played on "While My Guitar", but I would still leave George as one of the under rated tops.
-
In a degree I concur with Yeager.

I had the opportunity to see/hear Doyle Bramhall while on tour with ROger Waters in 2000. I wasn't impressed with him, because he was smiling as he ruined a few solos.
-
Bramhall plays a right handed guitar strung right handed while holding it left handed (low E on the bottom). This results in a unique sound that isn't conducive to "recreations" of the original recorded performances.
There are numerous studio quality guitarists that can faithfully imitate any lead. Waters choice of Bramhall indicates he wasn't overly concerned with "playing the album". Musicians will play leads several times in the studio, then pick a jam to go on the album. When it's time to go on tour most are quite irritated with the fact that they have to "learn" their OWN leads, but that's what the fans want.
Sorry for going off topic but the term "ruined" made me smile and reminded me of this persistent diversion between artists and appreciators. Artists want to interpret works, fans want them recreated.

He ruined the solo's by incorrectly playing period. When you hit the wrong fret/string on an electric guitar, you cannot hide it. Twice Roger Water's looked at him, and Roger wasn't smiling.

Almost forgot
Warren Haynes

Jimi used a right-handed guitar but he restrung it so the low E string was in the standard position, at the top.
-
Albert King ... played a right handed flying V lefty but doesnt invert the strings .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_King)
King died on December 21, 1992 from a heart attack in Memphis, Tennessee, but he played till the very end. Guitarist Joe Walsh spoke at his funeral, saying "Albert King could blow Eddie Van Halen away with his amp on stand-by."
R.I.P.

Actually, it's Doyle Bramhall II. Doyle Bramhall is a singer/songwriter/drummer.
I saw him with the BB King blues festival here in Houston back in 2001. Fantastic player.

Doyle may have fallen off the wagon at that point (again). Clapton did use Doyle as well for 'Riding With The King' although I don't think Doyle's songwriting is he forte.
