Title: DEM tool recommendations?

What tools have you guys used to successfully extract a heightmap that could be used for AH from the free DEMS (specifically, gtopo30)?

There's an awful LOT of tools out there - some free, many not - and I'd rather get a recommendation from someone who's done it as to what they've used.

Otherwise, I'll blow a big chunk of time on just this one step, which isn't where I want to spend it...
