Title: Tiles
Post by: croduh on July 29, 2007, 07:52:30 AM
Hi,

If anyone is interested i had these tiles lying around, if anyone would want them i could upload them. They are seamless, 4 subtypes.Suitable for Mediterranean theater map, or maybe a MA map, for a change (not sure if costum terrain tile textures are allowed).

As I read the "rules", new textures would be allowed.  But if you look at the default ones, you can see that it would probably be non-trivial to create the 16 quadrant variants and make the appropriate associated clutter changes.

I'd considered making my own snow tiles, but I  think I'm going to hold off on doing so for now for the terrain I'm trying to build - as much as green mountain-tops bug me.

Maybe someone more graphically oriented than I would find it easier than I though.

But thanks - maybe as we get more of this kind of stuff built we could archive it to MrMidis for future use.

Here you can see the transition between grassy rock (or "snow" in te) to grass tile. Also in Mediterranean.Hmm, i think i'll make whole pack in that style.

Half way there Ghastly:)

Mrmidi, my pm box is ok now.

64kills, I am sorry, but I don't make maps for others, or very rarely. There are some great tutorials that can get you started, then you can build the maps just the way you wan them.

As for the tiles, finished adding clutter.Don't let those trees scare you, fps are great on my very old machine.
I will upload those files soon, so if anyone wants to use them on their maps, be that h2h or anything else.Only problem is their size, with these 18 textures (subtypes and ovly files included) they make the res file up to huge 10 mb.But you can resize them.

Just tested resizing to 256x256.Res size goes down to 1 mb, and what is amazing, there is almost no loss of texture quality, I barely saw the difference.

Just for experiment sake try taking it down to 128x128 and see what you get. ;)

Hosting the map with 128x128 textures right now.Only 500 kb.Screen:

If you didn't know and if it still gives the detail you want, you can go all the way down to 16x16. But that low would probably be way to low...can you say "checker board"? :)

Tiles and textures are in one zip file "groundtiles.zip" on my site now.
Textures are 1024x1024 pixels, you can resize them.

-Mrmidi, my pm box is empty now

-64kills, most of my maps are ok for gvs.

Thanks for the tropical sea tile. One question, do I need a special transition tile since the last water tile I had made by you (Before the new version with beach tiles came out) will not work with this new version unless I alter the beach tiles. I however do not want to do this given my experience with graphics and editing textures / tiles.

Nice work, these are great. Just one question, how do you resize these?

Transitions for tropical sea is finished, just re-download the tropical sea zip file from site.

How can I apply these tiles to the MA, what file do I need to save these under ?

You can only use them to build them on your own maps. They can't be used in MA or any other arenas or maps.

Glad you like them:)

I'm all out of ideas what to do next.Kinda depressing.

Start optimizing it to MA / SEA levels (poly counts, texture sizes, etc) while keeping looking as good as it looks now ;)

I don't know how big the difference really is, big or small, but maybe there could be some challenge for your skills???
Title: Tiles
Post by: croduh on August 21, 2007, 03:44:04 PM
Well anyone who wants to use these textures can easily resize them.Quality is pretty good down to 256x256.

Only drastic change is the res file size.

I tried doing this, I went to attributes and changed size to 256x256, but on the ones with land (transitions), it cuts off all but the top right corner. It doesn't just make the whole thing shrink down to a smaller size. Do you know how I would do this with MS Paint or MS Picture It 7.0?

Post by: croduh on August 22, 2007, 05:49:12 AM
Are you sure you are resizing all files, including _a ones.
Remember to change colors to 256 and on _a files to 256 grayscale.

That's not his issue, when he re sizes the files using MS Paint, he can't re size the actual image, he can only cut off parts of it as MS paint reduces the frame not the picture. And after 3 years of experience with MS Paint, I still have found no way to re size the image by typing in the desired pixels and letting the program do the work.

McFarland, your best bet is going to be IRFanView, it's free and the download is located on MrMidi's website for AHII TE tools and accessories.

I guess you need almost 20 years experience....

Image... Stretch/Skew...stretch by equal percentages. A 1024 x 1024 bitmap stretched to 50% in both directions gives you a 512 x 512 bitmap.

MS Paint has many useful, and simple features that allow you to pound something out in minutes.

"Select All" / Grab the handles and drag to resize your bitmap while watching the size numbers at the bottom of the window on the tool bar.

Most people don't realize Shift+G while zoomed x 6 or 8 will display a pixel grid. It's all in the help files.

Still, it's only one layer, with limited tools and the color pallet at 256 colors will drive you crazy until you increase it, but nothing beats MS Paint for working fast. Add i_view, a little GIMP and you can do almost anything.

I see many have downloaded these textures and I actually saw a few new h2h maps using these textures.

I will now make the full set of these textures, each tile type different, in these "summer" or "snow" themes

Can't you send them into HTC so we can have a beach party over Christmas.

Make the Aussies feel at home.

The current water is just plain smurfy and my biggest grief about the graphics in game at the moment.

Time to put this one to bed.

rogerdee on 10-23-2006 started the rumor about htc wanting tiles for the seasons in his post in this thread (http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=190439&highlight=seasons) and it's been often repeated since then, even by me.

Skuzzy came in 8-31-2007 and basicly shut it down in this thread (http://forums.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=213495&highlight=seasons), but I guess you could say he left the door open in case someone does something unexpected.
