Title: Plane/Vehicle picks when under attack
Post by: waystin2 on July 31, 2007, 09:45:07 AM
Last night was horrific vulchfest at the base I started out in.  Are there in any recommendations on plane type to get off ground quicker?  My plane of choice is the A-5, but in an all out base attack, she just is not gonna get to far.  I got the Spit VIII got off ground quick, a couple of snapshots off, and eventually got chewed up before getting any ALT/E built up.  I cannot pick on the vulches, cherry pickers etc, as this is war (Right?).  Another question is whether I should go air defense in a vehicle, instead of trying to take off in a very unfriendly environment?  Clear the air a bit, so to speak.  Would love some insight on these thoughts & questions...

I usually up an Osti at a base under heavy attack.  The first mission being to keep the enemy from comfortably vulching the runways/hangers.

Once they are hesitating to vulch I like to fly the FM2 in base defense.  While it's slow, it's among the best turn-fighters and it's rugged giving you a chance to get airborn even under attack.  The Spit V would be my second choice, again because of it's turning abilities.

There are two ways to defend a heavily vulched base: Either jump into a GV to defend field and/or town.
Or just up a plane from another base. Vulchers are often suffering from target fixation, if you come in with some alt and speed you can often pick several of them before the horde perceives the threat. That way you can still use your favourite plane. Remember, they are just waiting for you to take of, so you better don't play their game.

However, if you insist on taking off from a capped base, a combination of acceleration and maneuverabilty is usually what you are looking for.

Some recommended planes:

- Hurri IIC. Not fast, but almost immediately combat ready after takeoff. Very maneuverably and 4 hard hitting Hispano's
- Spit V/IX/VIII/XVI. Acceleration, climbrate and maneuverability. I had recently some success with Spit V, (especially vs. CV planes) but you need to have a good aim (little ammo).
- La7. Stay low after takeoff, use your acceleration to get speed and some distance to the field. Then turn around & wreak havoc.
- Il-2. Use this flying tank to shoot vulchers in the face!

i've been liking the spit V, IX, or XVI, the zeke(the A6M5B in in LW) or the hurri2C, all depending on what's out there......if heavily capped, i go for the spit before the zeke, even though the zeke turns better..mostly because i can't find a comfortable view to shoot from in the zeke. if it's all zekes and ki's, then i still go with the zeke. medium to lightly capped.....i take the hurri....cannons are my friends:D :aok
in the spits, the 16 is kinda light on amo, but is strong...i've been likeing the 9 a lot too...heLLLLLL...ALL the spits pretty nice for quick defense.

1)hey...a question for ya on this one........when ur defending, do u leave auto combat trim on? i've had it off for about 6 or 7 months now....my BIGGEST problem when i up for quick defense is to get my ship at least close to in trim, so i can maneuver. what do u guys do?

Another tip that I would like to suggest is don't take off from the runway.  The vulchers are just waiting for you to be sitting there while your engine sputters to life.  Hit the "H" and start from under the cover of the hangar.  This will also give you a better chance to get airborne.

Just remember to make sure there aren't any of the fields AA guns in your flight path.  Get on the joystick fast and keep your bird low until you have gained some speed.  Good luck.

I use Combat Trim.

The FM2 is a good choice as baldegle pointed out. It is tough and as soon as you leave the ground it's pretty much as fast as it's gonna get. FM2 can turn like a mf, just make sure that your 4 50's fire at your convergence, otherwise you are gonna get more assists than Thornton and Crosby did last season(if you make it off the runway).

I use the FM2 a lot...and a F4F if I need the extra guns...

I sometimes take DT's, and when a lpane is coming slow on my six, I will drop one and turn left/right quickly (the DT will blind them for a half a second...it sounds stupid...but it has worked for me)

The Ki-84' isn't a bad idea either. It gets up VERY quickly and it turns like a Spitfire anyway. You could use the extra ammo vs. a horde of enemy vulchers.
