Title: What is with all the massed GV raids lately?
Post by: tedrbr on August 01, 2007, 01:18:54 AM
Spent tonight mostly jumping base to base to repel GV attacks.  Mostly Osties, with a few of everything else mixed in.  Last time I was online was pretty much the same.  This was flying as a Knit, but against GV attacks from both Rooks and Bish.

Hurri-D and IL-2 are usually okay for a few GV's, but with a half dozen Osties alone providing each other with fire support, among the rest of the GV's, it is a bit rough getting through all that fire.

Went back to using Ki-61's with bombs and that slow ROF 20mm.  Still getting hammered.  Finally opted for heavy Jugs or carpet bombing with Ju-88's and Lancs (which I rarely ever fly) or A8's.  Best luck I had was with heavy Jugs.

Their pattern pretty consistent.  Run in on the ground in a rush.  If opposition got too tough, they would move to attack a different base elsewhere.  Rinse and repeat.

What is with all the GV's these days?

Maybe the GV guys have finally learned that rolling single tanks is suicide and just gives the airborne guys free kills?

Don't complain.  The landgrabber squads are finally getting brave enough to move from EW and MW to the LWA's, they're just not brave enough to face much opposition yet.

I've seen the SOAR guys in LW lately and one night I held a VB against the A8 (Aces & Eights) guys almost single handedly with a Tiger for about 3 hours in LW.  It was endless entertainment.

I'll lift a GV to counter sometimes, but I prefer being in the air against them.
I usually love flying CAS against GV's, but the IL2 and Hurri-D, and maybe the A8 are the best we have in the game for those roles.... they are just not up to taking on a half dozen Osties working together alongside the other mud suckers.  110's have the cannon and ord, but even a bigger target to massed Osties.

I've also had success in the past with the bombs and cannon on the Ki-61 (think something amiss in model for Ki's cannon, in it's favor to taking out turret and tracks), and making use of it's speed once you've built up some E, but you have to get in real close...... also pretty hard with so much counter fire happening.

What planes have others been having success with in CAS role against these massed GV tactics?  And I don't mean taking advantage of damage model to get the "kill" on a Tiger by firing .50's at it.

If there are osties around, roll an La7 and come in at from 10 to 2 O' clock high.   25 rounds and "it's puffing".

From the air I always use my trusty F6F-5.  2 x 1000 lbs + 6 x rockets.

I use the 1K's on the heavy stuff (1 x on Panzers, Shermans and T-34's and 2 x on Tigers) or if there are many Osites I'll drop 1 x on them from 5K where they don't have a shot on me.  Then I use rockets to disable or take out Osties or to track the other heavies and finally use my .50's on any light stuff (Jeeps, M3's, M16's, etc.).

Not much of an ord load though so I fly back and forth re-arming between drops but it's fun.

If I know that most or all of the attackers are in Ostwinds, I will up a Il2. In all other cases, Hurricane IID is my GV killer of choice. I prefer to kill GV's with guns. Normally I use bombs in EW arena only, which lacks a proper tankbuster.

Pssh my number 1 ostie kill is my pony come in at a decent angle even 45 degress and one burst of 5o calls and out goes its turret.

I like the hurri2d but you have to hit in the rear of the turret for it to be very leathel.

Rofl just remembered the time stang and i bombed gerbl like 1000 times and the time i went bombing with karaya in mossies:rofl

killing  pointy click gvs with buddies is fun:p

You know I said that before, that after flying the ki-84 then jumping in the ki-61 the cannons seem much better than the 84's. I was told they were the same, but sure doesn't seem like it to me.

believe it or not, i few very well placed(or VERY lucky)rounds can track a T34....i've done it in EW against the soars.....and actually did enough damage to em that when one of my squaddies in GV's killed them, i got the kills....the best luck i've had that way is a side shot, and i've had no luck at all once they're into the towns or amongst trees(sherwood forrest). i'm not good at this, but i figured i'd mention it to ya....

If you pump bullets at a GV then someone who can actually kill it comes along and does so you get the kill simply because you put more rounds into him, not because you actually did any damage.

[EDIT]  You can track a heavy GV or kill the engine with bullets but you can't kill it.

It's fun either way...up a GV or up a plane and defend.

Some of the best fun is to be had when joining a big GV offensive. Particularly when the opposition ups GVs to oppose. Great fun.

i understand i can't kill it........the point i was making is that i can help the GV guys though.....once tracked, it's easy for them to go around his top side where he can't get his gun on them to return fire.......i already knew the killswere due to the GV's killin him......:aok
i also think i did a good job of....uumm.......really seriously completely agitating him:rofl

KI61 guns are cowl mounted, so the 20mm is concentrated into a smaller area.
Im not sure in 84s are cowl mounted also, i dint thnik they are and am too lazy to check.
