Title: Makeshift Submarine Found Near QE2
Post by: rpm on August 03, 2007, 11:36:23 AM

MSNBC is now reporting that it is a movie crew without permits.

Looked kinda strange for a minute. It was less than 1/4 mile from the QE2.

I would be interested if this made any sense at all.

What is QE2? Why didn't you link the story.

Maybe they didn't get the word that the QE isn't transporting troops across the Atlantic any more.

What a non-story, and shameful sensationalism by the media.

NewsMax had this: "Meanwhile, police sources also tell NewsMax that officers who have entered the sub have not found anything that might pose a security threat...yet."

'...yet'?!  Should we play menacing music?  Another news agency had a paragraph to the effect of 'there's no evidence that this is part of a terrorist attack'.

Have we become a nation of panicky animals that sees the Osama bin Boogeyman in every shadow?  Or is yellow journalism the only kind left?

LOL.. I'm glad the media was thorough checking their information before running the story.

The sensational headline always takes precedence over facts.

So whats wrong with building your own submarine? People build boats.. so why not a submarine.

News and cops the perfect mix for hysteria..

There is nothing wrong with building a submarine.

I think the concern would be someone building a submarine that has bad, or evil intentions for the submarine specially in a busy port like Long Beach.

When I saw that thing, It looked like an old drawing I'd once seen of Bushnell's Turtle .

It was a replica (sort of) of the Turtle. I can't find a print copy, but I heard an MSNBC producer say it was an artist filming a movie about a nuclear revolutionary war submarine.

It was in NYC not LA.

I'm being serious. That's what the producer said on MSNBC. He apparently knew who the guy was.

I looked and found several stories, but none mention the movie they were suppossedly filming.

Ah, rpm, I meant the nuclear part.

I know that was a slip-up. A nuclear sub from that idea would be preposterous.

HG Wells sold many a book about a victorian era submarine of an unknown power source and the mysterious Captain who was in command.

Which book would that be? Now Jules Verne wrote a book about a submarine.

No, seriously it wasn't a slip up. The guy may have been 180 off base, but he said it was part of a movie the artist was making and ID'd the guy live about 11amcdt. Now the producer may have been wrong, but that's what he said. I can't find anything to back up his claim, but you know how live news on the fly is.

Mea Culpa... my wee hours recall of sci fi writers is not up to par.

I aw a brief news blurb about it on National news, (NBC I believe) and all they said was that it was a prank done by some folks who created a replica Civil War sub. No mention about any movie at all.

Sounds like another who's on first bit of reporting again.

Prank?  That's dumb.  That's like calling the light-brite Aqua Teen Hunger Force signs "hoaxes".
