This song by Bon Jovi did it for me the other day. This was sent to me by a friend on the anniversary of the death of the girl I was seriously dating before I met my wife. She died on the way to surprise me with a visit while I was in college and I found out that she was dead the next morning when her mom and dad showed up at my dorm room to let me know.

In my Hour of Darkness...Gram Parsons..
He died of excesses shortly after he recorded this with Emmylou Harris--his 2 best friends in the world had died close together, put him over the edge. Beautiful song. Damn near makes me cry every time I hear it
...in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
once I knew a young man
went driving through the night
miles and miles without a word
with just his high-beam lights
who'd have ever though they'd build
such a deadly Denver bend
to be so strong, to take so long as
it would till the end
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
another young man safely strummed his
silver string guitar
and he played to people everywhere
some say he was a star
but he was just a country boy
his simple songs confess
and the music he had in him so very few possess
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
then there was an old man, kind and wise with age
and he read me just like a book and he
never missed a page
and I loved him like my father
and I loved him like my friend
and I knew his time would shortly come
but I did not know just when
in my hour of darkness, in my time of need
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed
oh, Lord grant me vision, oh, Lord grant me speed...

I second Whiskey Lullaby:
If you haven't seen Paisley live, he shoots alot of the video that syncs behind his live show. And when this song plays, Alison comes up and sings her section behind the band (on screen only). Not a dry eye in the house. I was out on a few dates opening up for him in 2005. We waited to see that song every night...

"Star Spangled Banner"
"Proud to Be an American"

"He Stopped Loving Her Today" - George Jones
"Farewell Party" - Gene Watson
I may be singing these soon, my papaw is in the hospital, they had to amputate part of his foot. It won't heal, there's no blood flow to it since they took out the vien in his leg for a heart bypass years ago. They are giving it two days to heal, if not, they will amputate the leg. They don't think he will survive the amputation. If he dies, I will sing these songs at his funeral, for they will be true in his case. I think they should give it more time to heal, but they won't. Tis a sad time in Tennessee. They certainly bring a tear to the eye, especially for me.

Tim McGraw's new song "If You're Reading This" really hits home as well. I've got a few friends flying for Kalitta Charters whose job it is to fly soldiers to their final resting places. One of those very airplanes brought a friend of mine and one of my mother's former students to his home. I think it was especially hard on her since she liked him so much and was my age.
That said here is a video of Vince Gill's "Rest High on that Mountain" to the video of one of those soldiers. This video is worth a thread in itself I believe but I'll post it here for now. Someone posted this on another board I frequent and it brings tears to my eyes.

Well, I wrote a song as a tribute to my wife, and have had several women tell me it tears them up when they hear it. It's called "Crying In Her Sleep", and you can here it at http://www.myspace.com/richowen61
Give it a listen if you've got a few minutes and tell me what you think.
-
I came across this song by chance not long after two of my three kids died in a car wreck, now two years ago.
How he knows what it's like I have no idea but it's as close as it comes to describing how it feels. I know it was written in the wake of 9/11 (also my late daughter's birthday)
I can't listen to it without tears for my kids.
You're Missing-Bruce Springsteen
Shirts in the closet, shoes in the hall
Mama's in the kitchen, baby and all
Everything is everything
Everything is everything
But you're missing
Coffee cups on the counter, jackets on the chair
Papers on the doorstep, you're not there
Everything is everything
Everything is everything
But you're missing
Pictures on the nightstand, TV's on in the den
Your house is waiting, your house is waiting
For you to walk in, for you to walk in
But you're missing, you're missing
You're missing when I shut out the lights
You're missing when I close my eyes
You're missing when I see the sun rise
You're missing
Children are asking if it's alright
Will you be in our arms tonight?
Morning is morning, the evening falls I have
Too much room in my bed, too many phone calls
How's everything, everything?
Everything, everything
You're missing, you're missing
God's drifting in heaven, devil's in the mailbox
I got dust on my shoes, nothing but teardrops
-

Well said Karaya,
Though I hadnt really thought about it that way before, I totally agree, it isnt the cartoon planes that keeps me around here, it's the guys (and gals) pulling the trigger, and what you all have to say about the world we live in that keeps me coming back.
You folks have broadened my horizons, and opened my eyes and mind far beyond anything I would have thought possible five years ago.

speaking of community Dichotomy, I have to ask not to sidetrack from the thread....
you mentioned before being admin of some other boards, and the "communities" that surrounded them, what is your honest impression of this board compared to the many others on these interwebs?
personally I have yet to see a community this close, and active in real life with each other. have you ever witnessed something like this place?
<> sorry Mac I don't mean any disrespect in going off course. My prayers are still with you sir.
-
Only once and it fell apart when bickering and infighting became publicly acceptable.
Quite frankly I think this is the best administered board I've ever been on. The mods do not interact with the general populace and, when they see an infraction, they merely delete the post, thread, or replace it with 'see rule #whatever. Keep in mind this is not a kissa## to HTC I just think they do a good job of running the board and the game in general. Not perfect but pretty good overall.
I have, in fact, linked other board admins to this site as an example of how to moderate boards.
My personal rules of board behavior is when it's almost to the point of name calling and flinging insults take a moment and think about what you are saying. It takes conscious thought to type and hit enter or, for that matter, to hit the transmit key. If it's considered acceptable on that board then go for it. Kind of the 'when in Rome do as the Romans rule'. If you think someone is 'calling you out' for lack of a better phrase it's best to take it to pm's. We all tend to be defensive when we're called out in front of our peers whereas a behind the scenes conversation could reduce a lot of drama.
When I was modding and admin'ing sites I always approached the member in pm's first before I made a decision on them sticking around. That said, if they ignored me and continued to troll I punted and ip banned them.
I'm not saying I'm some tree hugging 'we are the world' singing humanitarian. Far from it in fact. Unless I 'know' you I'm pretty standoffish in real life. I do, however, always try to understand the other persons point of view before I lambast them for being uninformed dolts. The problem is once I label them as uninformed dolts I realize they are not worth my time arguing with or bothering to flame.
I'm not going to call any names here but there were members that I was warned about when I joined this board. Most of them have turned out to be ariticulate, intelligent, and generally engaging personalities. Perhaps not someone I'd go out of my way to visit but certainly people that make my grey cells move around a bit.
I'm also not going to say that there aren't some members I'd just as soon not read their drivel or see them in the air but that's the choice I made when I put my credit card on the line and joined this board. Frankly I just ignore them. Generally speaking they disappear fairly quickly and the core group of players stick around regardless of if they're actively flying or not.
I said once in the TA and I'll say it on the board. I don't particularly care if I'm the hottest stick in the game. I'll try to get better with practice and time. What I DO care about is my reputation with a group of people I've come to know and respect.
Of course that's just my opinion
