Title: P-40 F
Post by: Hand on August 05, 2007, 08:24:58 AM
I wished we had the P-40 F model with the Merlin engine, this improved performance to a great degree, I believe the p-40 deserves an upgrade. Some say the 109s and spits, get all the different models because they where in it from start to finish, so was the P-40. 1311 of these were built, with the packard merlin.

                                                             Thanks Hand

Actually, performance changed over altitude due to the Packard (Merlin) V-1650-1 (an older version similar to that in the Hurricanes). The F model was slower at sea level than the E model, but was faster at 20,000 feet. At 14,000 feet, the E was 10 mph faster than the F.

Unlike the Allison powered P-40s, the F and L models were far more prone to ingesting dust and debris due to the updraft carburetor. This created more maintenance issues, especially in North Africa. Beginning with the P-40K, the Allison V-1710-73/F4R) made considerably more power than the Merlin (V-1650-1) and was the preferred powerplant in the P-40. It was easier to keep running at peak efficiency and produced better power at lower altitudes, where the P-40 spent the majority of its time anyway.

I think you would be disappointed that the P-40F would be inferior to our current E model (which is really modeled like the P-40K as the E actually didn't have WEP).

I'd rather see the P-40N-20.

My regards,

Widewing

I'm with widewing on this one - if we ever get a new P40 variant, I'd hope it was a P40N model.  The P40N was a re-engined, lightened version with more modern equipment which was faster and more maneuverable than the earlier versions (especially the E's).  From what I'm reading, the N's were the major production version with over 5,200 built, and they were supplied to just about everybody (which would give the skinners something great to work on).

raafwarbirds.org has a good document online (from Aug '43) about the differences between the P40E and P40N models they were being supplied.  Its a good read.

I've also been pulling for the P-40N for some time, if for no other reason than its was numerically very important, especially in CBI and SWPA areas until 1944.

N also had a revised rear canopy, better rearward visibility, and some were lightened to make them more maneuverable.

Only benifit I can see to the P-40F would be the lengthened tail (I think that was the F) for better lateral stability.

I've asked for the P40N too, and think it would be a good addition. But it seems this view is a minority, as i don't think it was even in the previous aircraft poll.

P-40N? I only thought that the major difference was the better canopy... well, I'll be doing some reading.

I mean the P-40E we have is already fun, but a P-40N would be a helluva time from what I hear.

Man,I thank ya'll for the info, I was just tryin to get something done for a remarkable a/c. I am glad that there are others that think the P-40 could use some help in AH. I was just willin to  settle for the F model. I would be very happy with the N-model.
I just believe that we get the last models of other A/C. Why not the ol' P 40? Thanks again for ya'lls input.
