Title: Switching Planes Freezes
Post by: McFarland on August 06, 2007, 01:37:01 AM
Every time I try to switch planes and then take off, or when I start a new game, my computer freezes. This is in H2H, and it only happens on some maps. On others I can use any plane I want. When it happens, the screen turns black for a second and then just turns white, and sometimes I can still hear the sound. Then I hit Alt+F4, and it comes up with the message box "Aces High.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close, sorry for any inconvienances". I can only see my mouse when it is over the box, but as soon as I click the "Don't send error report" button, everything returns to normal. I was wondering what could cause this, and how I could fix it.

your computer might be running out of resourses. Some of the H2H maps have edited graphics and weird settings. So on some maps your computer can handle the load while on others these is just to much stuff to load and it chokes.

Post a copy of your Dxdiag  (first third) here and a list of your ingame settings. Maybe some one can spot a problem.

Ok, thanks. I also noticed on the task manager, that with the computer idle, the CPU usage is 0-7%, and then with AOL, 0-10%, but when I start Aces High, and let it sit idle for 10 minutes, even then the CPU usage is a constant 100%.

The video settings for the game are 128MB max texture size, with optimize objects and terrains both checked, and 1024x768 resolution.

Your system, while not a "screamer" should be able to handle the game ok. We'll let some of the computer gurus look at it, I'm not sure of which drivers that card should use, but they will know.

With the game running your CPU cycles should 100%, and all on AH2. If while the game is not loaded up it should almost "pulse" like a heartbeat from 0% to 2%.

I havn't run AOL in a long time. Back then it was a resource hog, not sure about now. I'd try running the game with out it. As long as your computer is connected to the internet you should be able to play the game.

The only other thing I can think of is the H2H room your trying to connect to has something your computer doesn't like, wheather its a skin or or what I don't know.

Yes, AOL is still a resource hog. With it idle, the CPU usage is 10-40% with a web page up, 0-10% without a web page up.

Memory: 254MB RAM

I'm no guru, but that could be the problem.
Title: Switching Planes Freezes
Post by: Krusty on August 06, 2007, 03:17:38 PM
The ram by itself isn't the problem.

My guess is you're on some hokey HTH custom map with dozens of 1024x1024 "custom" skins in it, and when you change the plane the computer tries to load the NEXT skin into memory, but can't do it.

I think the problem is the lame HTH maps, more than the game itself. I could be wrong.

As for RAM, you should have all skins disabled, detail sliders reduced, weapons effects turned off, GV effects turned off, and it should run.

Not the best, but it'll run. While I'd suggest a memory upgrade, I can't say that your hardware is the reason you're crashing.

Well, nothing I can do about the RAM, the computer hardware can't be updated, it's a prebuilt computer, and a junky Dell at that. I have closed all the processes I can, and with AOL running, I'm at 24 processes, and 0-7% CPU usage. Although, as far as I know, the maps I was on at the time didn't have custom skins. And the Winter War map, with only custom skins, worked just fine. Thanks for the help.

Don't know why, but I just now thought to check this problem in the offline arena. Same problem. The only planes I have been able to successfully up are the 110-G2, P-38L, and C-47. I tried the Spit I, Spit 16, F4-u4, and several others, all had the same problem. This is with skins disabled. The problem isn't selecting planes (not sure if I was clear on this before), it was in taking off. I can select the planes, but when I click on a direction to take off, the game locks up. Fuel loads, weapons, ordinance don't affect it. This seems to occur in every map, but I'm not 100% positive on that. Any thoughts as to what could be causing this?

Ok, problem solved. I uninstalled AH and then reinstalled it. Something must have went wrong the first time.
