25H only had one pilot.  The guys in the 345th BG who flew them low level didn't like the 25H for that reason as if something happened, there was no back up.

They ended up passing on their 25Hs and going back to 25Gs that had 2 pilots.

Too bad we don't have a B25B and of course I'm fine with the carrier take off as long as it's programed in that you lose the aircraft after every flight like the Doolittle Raiders did.

Guppy, knowing the suicide porkers that would roll it, that's not a problem...

P.S. Didn't they also ditch the -Gs in favor of -Js at the earliest opportunity?

The 5th AF didn't like the cannon.  They ended up more often then not replacing it with 2 50s in the tunnel.

So yes the solid nose J was preferred once it became available.  Gun nose kits were sent out to them as well from the factory and they sliced off the glass noses of 25J-11s and put on the gun noses.  There are numerous pictures of OD B25s with NMF gun noses that had been retrofitted.

There was even one B25D that this was done too so you have the unusual and one of a kind B25D-3  "Dirty Dora II" that is an all silver B25D with a J strafer 8 gun nose on it.  It was still flying operational missions until the end of the war.

I'll be curious how the B-25 stacks up to the A-20 performance wise as a "fighter":)

I think i'd prefer the 8 gun nose as well, but truthfully nothing survives the 6 x .50 in the A-20 if they happen to fly in front of it very often.

A20 flies far too lightly for my tastes.

Going off how the B-25 felt in WB, it will be a dog. More like the -26 than the -20, in terms of responsiveness and agility.

I'm all for letting the 25's take off of carriers.  As long as you do the following to them:

Remove of the lower gun turret
Install de-icers and anti-icers
Remove Steel blast plates mounted on the fuselage around the upper turret
Remove of the liaison radio set
Install three addition fuel tanks and support mounts in the bomb bay, crawl way and lower turret area to increase fuel capacity from 646 to 1,141 U.S. gallons
Place Mock gun barrels installed in the tail cone
Replace the Norden bombsights with a makeshift aiming sight.

Then you can fly that gasoline can  anywhere you want in the MA.  Should blow up very nicely ;-)

Hey Dan,

Can't speak for the USAAC aircrew, but the USMC H squadron flew with co-pilots.  Even though there wasn't a second set of controls, there was a second seat, and the co-pilot manned the ranging controls for the radar slaved to the 75mm gun during attack runs...

For whatever its worth...
