Okay, I've read pro's and con's from various websites on all three. I sick and tired of wading through post upon post upon post of what advantage one has over the other, why this one sucks, why that one doesn't...etc.
I thought I'd put the question to some real gamers...people that have to suck up their pride when they get kilt in a game. What a better audience to ask?
My requirements:
I--ts for the kids. I don't do games anymore, except tulips High during my 2 week Christmas break.
--I want something dependable from a hardware point of view. Apparently there are some gamers on their 4th Xbox 360 in as many months.
--I want an "All in one" package, where I don't have to buy extra this or that...
--It needs to have internet access for multiple gamers so that when the curtain climbers turn into devil dog teenagers in a couple years, that it will still continue to entertain them...WHEN they've earned their gaming time (After reading and homework, naturally)
I'd prefer to hear from those who have played on ALL 3, not some guy that bought one, and thinks his is the freakin' next coming of christ.
So what is the consensus, in one sentence or less?
XBOX360?
Wii?
PS3?
A PC is out of the question, they each have one, and I'm tired of keeping up with the "gamer Jones" trying to upgrade 'em everytime a new improved game comes out.

If they are still young, as in below the age of 10, then the Wii is a good choice. Microsux has managed to work out the hardware kinks with the latest version of the Xbox360 (Elite edition) so the red rings of death shouldn't be an issue. PS3 is good if you need a Blu-Ray player.
ack-ack

i have an xbox360. i have had it for 6-8 monthes no problems what so ever. For online you have to pay for the Xbox live (so that another thing you have to pay) if you want to be able to play online. If its more than 1 kid you may want another controller(not nearly as much fighting as to who goes 1st when you can both play).
I have done the Wii ( i dont own one) its pretty fun but....i would probly chose Xbox over it.
as for the Ps3...only played it once...it was fun but its also pretty pricey for the whole package i would imagine.

Kids are 8 and 11, going on 12 and 16, if you know what I mean...
Edumacate me. Is Bu-Ray the next Beta VCR media that will die on the vine? Why would I "need" Blue-Ray?

Thanks for the feed bag...er back. :) PS3 is like $500. I nearly crapped in my Depends right in the Walmart isle when I saw that price...but I kept thinking "well, I must have EVERYTHING I need at $500, right?".....right?

Blue-ray is ONE of the next steps past DVD. People started looking for a High Definition DVD, so two different types were created. Blue-ray, and HD DVD. Neither are cross compatible.
I haven't seen a head to head comparison of DVD vs. Blue-ray/HD DVD, so I can't say that it's any better. You probably wouldn't think about getting BR or HD if you didn't have an HDTV.
It's just that the PS3 acts as a gaming console, but ALSO a Blue-ray player. So if you ever had the hots for something more then HD, and a gaming console, you had it in PS3.

Consumer Reports take on the PS3 (http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/electronics-computers/news-electronics-computers/december-2006/first-look-sony-playstation-3-and-nintendo-wii-12-06/overview/1206_playstation3_ov.htm)
this might help

I wouldn't buy the ps3 for blue-ray...
On April 13, 2007, Samsung announced their first generation Universal Combo player BD-UP5000. This is the first player announced that supports the full specs of both the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats including all interactive features of both formats.[23]

I know you said you wanted opinions from those who played all 3....but the Wii is the freakin' next coming of Christ! Alright, not really but it's insanely more fun (to me) then sitting around with an Xbox 360 or PS3. I don't OWN any of the 3, I've only played the Wii but it's the most fun I've ever had with a video game system. I hope I know you enough to know that your kids are active, the Wii will keep them active indoors even when they don't want to be outdoors. Boxing is intense in itself and the other games are just plain fun (I enjoy tennis myself).
In addition, they are coming out with a Yoga "game" for the Wii. I think they might also be coming out with a Yoga program for PS3 as well but I don't pay attention to gaming very much.

The jury is still out on what will be the next HD format, BlueRay, or HD DVD.
Many people that remember the Beta, VHS strugle for market share are sitting on the fence waiting for the smoke to clear.
Sony is of course pushing BlueRay, and they have some muscle to do so since they own a movie company, and a gaming console that also plays BlueRay discs.
The xbox on the other hand plays HD dvd, but you have to buy an add on to do so.
Like Soda72 said don't buy a PS3 just because it can be used as a BlueRay player.
The best advise I can give you is look at the games your kids would be interested in and see if one console has more of the games that they want to play. Many of the games are made for both, but some are exclusive to one or the other.
I have yet to see a wii, but from what I hear they can be really fun with the interactive way the games are played, and who knows your kids might get a little exercise while playing video games.

With 4 kids, you'll be wanting all 3
Trust me. Just get all three and save yourself 2 times the amount of cost in aggrivation

I've played all three, and I'm very satisfied with my Wii. I can make a few good arguments for it:
1. It's very fun, my 5 year old likes it as much as his 11 year old cousin who likes it as much as the 15 year old, etc. Everyone likes it, including me and my parents. It's FUN.
2. It's cheap. Costs about half of the 360, 1/3rd the price of a PS3.
3. No console is going to be The One Console that lasts forever, so spending a bunch of money up front now doesn't buy you a futureproof gaming machine, it just costs you a lot of money now. With the Wii's low cost, the price of obsolescence is much lower.
Two years from now, the consoles will be X times as fast and a fraction of the price, so why shoot your multi-year budget on this one purchase?

Unfortunately, this is probably the best piece of advice you could ever get.
...
I have not played all three. I've only played the Wii. However, I've played the earlier versions of playstation and xbox and, assuming the next generations play out much as the latter, can give you some information.
Historically speaking, Xbox and Playstation have the same games, whereas Nintendo has its own lineup. This is great if you happen to prefer Nintendo games, or can't live without them, but is a downer if you want the "big name" games, that usually cannot be found for it.
However, with kids as young as yours, its far from certain you'd want your kids playing some of those "big name" games in the first place (Grand Theft Auto, for example). Of course, your kids will eventually grow up.
Still, if you're the sort of parent that doesn't really want their kids playing games like Grand Theft Auto until they're at least 16, then you might as well buy the Wii for a few reasons:
* By the time your kids are old enough that you let them/they really want the big kid games, there's probably going to be a better system out, or the PS3/Xbox360 will be a fraction of the price.
* In the meantime, the Wii will likely offer a wider range of games for all the age groups your children fall into. I'm not sure if you've ever tried to find kid friendly playstation or XBox games, but there (at least for the last generation) aren't anywhere near as many options as Nintendo offers.
* The Wii is going to keep the kids somewhat more active, as its much more of an interactive system, where you're usually standing up and moving around a little. It's not some great exercise program, and no substitute for running around outside, but it's definitely healthier than just sitting on the couch pressing buttons.
Just some thoughts,
-
Wii is the way. shure others are good but so expensive and only 1 will win the round 2 of VHS vs Betamax (two formats enter, one format leaves!) not many good adult games... yet just wait for the new Resident Evil for that, or Manhunt. But the other games are good as well for any and all(Wii Fit, Zelda, and Super Smash Bros (cant wait). Me and mom often have bowling or batting competition, not such a learning curve for her like any other games. but thats just me.
-
I have an xbox 360 and i have relised that the new 360 games (the higher graphic games) totally over heat the 360 and the intercooler by nyko also makes the 360 overheat but by sticking the the old xbox games (halo 2,CS,GTA3,madn line) the 360 does fine. So yea the Wii is the best bet!!!!:aok :aok
-
I don't have any of them yet, but I say Wii, but that's because I've been a loyal follower of the Nintendo camp since 1986. :D
But if you need any more reasons:
Zelda
Metroid
Online service allowing you access to every game from the previous consoles (IIRC the plan was to have all of them, though I think they were being released in bunches)

Just get em gaming pc's. Same games, plus better titles. They'll learn skills that they'll use the rest of their lives playing around on pc's verse console games. Probably a hell of a lot cheaper in and better longevity.
-
My girlfriend and I just had this conversation a while ago. Her son is 9, daughter 5. He can only play the "Everyone" rated games on his GameCube. The graphics of the PS3 look great. The recent price lowering of the XBox looks tempting too. But for this age group, the Wii has them all beat.
We're going for the Wii since they have so many games for this age group. I'm in the process of moving em all into my house so this will be my first game console since the Atari days :)

Not really. The advantage to the consoles is you can rent games. We've rented games we wouldnt have ever considered buying and wound up liking them a lot.

Wii is backward compatable with Gamecube games, so the kids can pick up some of the older GC games (real real cheap) and play 'em on the Wii.
I have 3 kids - 6, 8, and 3 and they LOVE the Wii. We have had to limit their playing time because they would be on it 24/7 if we let 'em.
-
As much as I like my Wii, the titles out currently would not keep the interest of most kids 15+. I find myself playing a lot of my old GameCube titles. Tiger Wood s Golf and Call of Duty for the Wii were disappointments. However at the current price, with what you get, the Wii is the best deal going.
I would pick up a Wii, and then get a PS2 cheap (new or used).
-
Having played all three and owned the first Xbox and the original Xbox360 I would go with a 360 and a Wii. Number one the Wii has the coolest interface taht I have ever used. The 360 would be for nothing but sports games and Star Wars games which is all I let my kids play on the Xbox.
-
Like soda mentioned, do NOT buy the PS3 and expect a great picture on it from Blu-Ray. It ain't gonna happen. Also, Blu-Ray movies are a rip off in price at this point. Wait two years and they will be more affordable.
For your family the Wii is the one to get. My borther has one and my two nieces love it. Heck, I've even helped him with Blazing Angels.
-
I have a 360 and it is great.
If i was a parent, i would get my kids a Wii, get them doing some exercise while playing on the computer - the movements really do give you a bit of a workout, rather than just lying there for the PS3 and Xbox.
The new Mario for the Wii looks brilliant, and they are bringing out Mario Kart.
Plus, the Wii is good for the parents too, Tiger Woods Golf on it is fun :)

Here's the analysis:
Wii is essentially the old Nintendo Game Cube platform, but with the enhanced game play that the unique controllers bring to the table. Very big on the fun factor, but unspectacular graphics and not super powerful for sophisticated "Gen 3" games.
Xbox 360 and PS3 are both truly gen 3 systems - awesome graphics, hard drive, powerful CPUs. They are comparable as far as graphics and performance and features. Xbox has an HD DVD player, PS3 has a BlueRay. It's way too soon to know whose going to win that format war - if anybody. Both have on-line game play. Both provide extra on-line services and promise to provide more (i.e. movie downloads from partners like amazon or netflix). Both are really positioned as home entertainment consoles rather than gaming systems. Many games are released for both platforms, though each has some high profile proprietary games.
Bottom line: Buy an Xbox 360 and, if you want to add another dimension, do the Wii too - they're relatively cheap for what you get.
Why? It's mostly a coin toss between Xbox and PS3 - particularly if your kids don't have their eyes on any particular titles. But, the Xbox 360 has been in the field for a year, the hardware problems have been resolved, it has a solid track record and a loyal following. None of your kids' friends are going to say "Ew, you have an Xbox 360?". (Plus the porn industry has adopted HD-DVD as their format :aok - gotta be lookin out for daddy).
Sony has had a few missteps with the PS3, it's still mostly unproven in the field, it costs more with no indication that it's worth it - though they are adjusting the price.
The Wii is a blast and will always be good for some shallow gaming, but it's not really going to grow with your kids for 3-5 years and unless all you are ever going to want is family fun gaming - the Wii is much more fun when playing head-to-head games with people - I wouldn't recommend it as the only console for teens (friends will find it "quaint").

Ive got a game cube for my now 11 year old heading to 12.
Just got her (me) the Wii after our vacation, my sister and brother in law grabbed on, and it was a blast.
My whole family plays now, grabs the remotes and bowl, tennis, box, it's just a great deal of fun. Internet connection so at night I can sit back on the 52" in browse the forums, download some of my old favorite games and such.
For die hard gaming, nothing beats my PCs though, but for family entertainment that's not sit on your butt and twist a little hand held controller, Wii rocks.

(Plus the porn industry has adopted HD-DVD as their format - gotta be lookin out for daddy).
I heard that the Porn industry wasnt too exited about the HD format. Some things you dont want too see too clearly. And they tought that an better quality picture when watching porn would work more as an turnoff then an turn on...
Just saying :)

Wow, thanks for all the brief analysis guys. I'll let you know what we do. It's probably going to be in Sept/Oct time frame.

FYI, Microsoft announced a price drop on Xbox360 effective yesterday...
