Title: College Football
Post by: Sikboy on August 08, 2007, 02:16:00 PM
Last year I got sucked into College Football. As a longtime Charger fan, I always found it fascinating that I never developed an interest in the College game (Though, for many of those years, the Bolts were closer to a NCAA D1AA team than an actual Pro Franchise lol). Having finally wound up in a school with a football program (my fourth college/university) I couldn't help myself.

So here's what I'm wondering:

Are you a college football fan?
Who's yer team?
Did you go to School there?

As for me..

Yes,
$MU,
Yes.

I'm a diehard fan of Nebraska. I was born 2.8 miles from Memorial Stadium in Lincoln Nebraska. I even have red N's in my blood. :D

Since I've been alive, they have only had one losing season (2004) and I'm 44 years old. The stadium has been sold out for every game since 1963.

Arkansas Razorbacks.

They have the number one rushing attack in the country.  Big question marks at quarterback and the rebuilt defense.

Nope not a college football fan. Not really a sports fan at all, it just doesn't interest me.

Went to the University of Arizona

Went to one game in person. I had more entertainment watching the folks in the crowd try to hide their booze from the campus Police than the game. Then again in the early 70's the UofA didn't really have much of a football team. If they won a third of their games, they considered it a winning season.

Now the only game I care about with them, and it's in both football and basket ball, is the UofA ASU game. I still won't watch it but it makes me happy if they beat ASU.

Yeah, and they had 22 straight wins stashed back on January 1, 1966...until they ran into the unranked LSU Tigers in the Cotton Bowl. That had to be one of the greatest football games ever - certainly one of the best I've ever experienced. Nobody gave LSU a chance, and they won it the hard way.

I'm a Texan through and through, but we lived in New Orleans when I started playing organized football. I cain't hep mysef, I'm a Tiger fan.

PS - I do hope the Cowboys end up with McFadden. Let's hope Cleveland tanks this year, eh? ;)

Culero talk about not being given a chance....in the 1995 Fiesta Bowl #1 ranked Nebraska went up against #2 ranked Florida. None of the sports Talking Heads gave Nebraska a snow balls chance in hades vs Spurrier's offense at Florida.

The Huskers thrashed second-ranked Florida by a score of 62 - 24. That 38-point margin of victory was the second highest ever in a No. 1 versus No. 2 matchup, and gave Nebraska back-to-back national titles. NU trailed 10-6 after the first quarter against Florida, but scored 29 un-answered points and rolled on for the victory.

The Huskers rushed for a NCAA bowl-record 524 yards in that game, including 199 yards rushing by quarterback Tommie *Touchdown* Frazier. Defensively, the Blackshirts dominated the Gators' famed "Fun 'N' Gun" offense with a brutality and aggression that put fear in the eyes of Florida's QB Danny Wuerful (sp?). The Huskers recorded seven sacks, forced four turnovers, had a safety and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Of course as a diehard Nebraska fan I expected my beloved Huskers to win and thought all the Talking Heads were just so many used tools. I just didn't expect the kind of blow out that happened.

The '95 Husker team is most certainly one of the greatest college football teams ever assembled and a valid case can be made for the greatest team of all time.

Culero,

Yep, LSU has a great program.  Let's hear it for the SEC!

I'm reminded of a story the Late Jerry Clower used to tell about LSU.

He was on a flight to Atlanta or some such southern destination when the subject of college football came up.  The previous fall LSU had defeated a heavily favored, strong as 60 acres of garlic Auburn team in a rain-soaked game.

Anyways, one of the Auburn fans on the plane sneeringly commented that the LSU Tigers were a very good team "IN THE RAIN!"

Jerry responded, "I've got news for you Auburn War Eagles fokes.  Us Mississippi State people have been playing LSU hand-runnin' for years.  And them Tigers is BAD...WET OR DRY!"

Elfie, I remember that game well.  Some well-deserved come-uppance for an arrogant Steve Spurrier.  Talk about putting on a clinic!

I watched the entire game with a smirk on my face. :D

Actually,my WVU Mountaineers were first among all BCS schools in rushing. They were number two overall behind Navy. With Slaton and White now juniors, they should certainly be at the least that good this season.

Navy was ranked first in the nation, but Arkansas was ranked first in the SEC -- and that's harder.

Yeah,WVU was stymied by SEC champion Georgia's defense in the Sugar Bowl a year and a half ago.

WVU managed to grind out a paltry 382 yards on the ground.

One of the unsung and largely unknown stars of the Arkansas backfield is senior Peyton Hillis.  The fact that he is unknown outside of Arkansas is mystifying since he is, at the current time, the number one fullback prospect for the NFL draft nationwide.  Hillis is, perhaps, the most punishing blocker they've ever had at that position.  He missed the last four games of the season because a thigh injury, and his absence was keenly felt.

I've been watching the Razorbacks for 45 years and they have never been this loaded with backfield talent.

Unfortunately, the coaching staff imploded after the season and excised the offensive coordinator and a Parade All-American true freshman quarterback from the system.

I just think they made promises they did not intend to keep. I have a very good friend who is well entrenched in the Arkansas athletic department as a deep pocket booster and his father was told by the AD that the coach was only brought in to bring in those kids from that school with the promise of being made into the HC when they fired Houston Nutt at the end of last year. What screwed things up was the Razorbacks went to the SEC championship game....Kinda hard to fire a guy after a season like that.

Reschke,

The sad thing is, Mustaine had started and won eight straight games for them, then he started cold one Saturday afternoon and Nutt pulled him and put in Casey Dick....who also floundered.

Casey started the last three games.  Including the one where he replaced Mustaine, he lost three and won only one.

Since then, Mustaine quit the Razorbacks and transferred to...wait for it....USC.

Yeah....Nutt is a GREAT coach.

You are right Shuckins. Living down here in Birmingham you get 100% SEC football 24/7 365 and I have friends who went to Arkansas as I said and are deep pocket boosters. They have wanted him gone for the last 3-5 years but that tard keeps pulling it out somehow. They have said that his only saving grace this year is the runningbacks and once they leave this year he is gone.

I'd have to check,but you're probably correct.

You can't replace Boston College,Virginia Tech, and Miami of Florida instantaneously.

They still rushed for 382 yards on the SEC champ in their own backyard.Total offense was 502 yards.

Trust me, I'm not belittling the accomplishment, but you know I mean no malice or "ribbing".   I was just saying.   <> Sox.

FWIW, I was rooting for the Mountaineers until they ALMOST imploded against ECU(?)   They finally got their head straight in the 3rd and 4th Quarters, but for a while it was a good game to watch.
