Title: OT: Some vids worth checking out.
Post by: toonces3 on August 10, 2007, 12:39:37 AM
Hey all,
I'm stuck in bed unable to fly, so I've been browsing youtube for some videos.  I've made a list of some of the better ones I found, along with some comments.

These are not Aces High videos, but I think alot of you with appreciation for the creation of good videos will enjoy them anyway.

'Made in America'
This was the video that gave me the idea in the first place.  This video makes me nostalgic; reminding of those long overseas flights away from family for 6 months at a time, flying approaches at night into a field after a 10 hour burner. I think the guy made the film to showcase the graphics of FSX, still, it's a good video that the music makes better.

'Five PM'
Hilarious!  This may be my new favorite video, beating out 'Come with me'.  I can't imagine how long it took this guy to sync all of this up, but it works, and it is hilarious.  Pay special attention the the lyrics of the music.
The first 15 seconds of music are kinda annoying- stick with it, it gets better.

'Vantage'
Wow.  This one tells a sort of story.  Sort of abstract.  The production is great.  The F-14 portion is killer.  If you just can't stand it, fast forward to about 5 minutes in- the transitions are really amazing.

'Danger Zone'
I debated putting this one in.  The video in and of itself isn't that great exactly.  It's...weird.  Plus, it's all in French.  Still, if you can hang through the first minute or so, it is really funny in a weird way.  The production is what finally sold me on putting it up here- the guy really did a fantastic editing job.

'Glidepath'
I don't know if this will be anyone's cup of tea or not.  I happen to have Orbiter (although this might be from FSX, or a blend of both).  It's not exactly realistic, but the production is neat, and the music really suits the video.
This guy has a few other films if you search by user.  The 'Flying Dreams' or something of the sort is...unusual.

'No Fear'
Ok, another one I debated putting up.  I like it because it captures the chaos of jet combat in an entertaining manner.  Perhaps a bit too heavy on the production transitions.  It also needs to be tightened up.  The first 3 minutes or so drag, but then gets fairly interesting.  If you're gonna fast forward, check the dogfight sequence starting at 4:57.http://youtube.com/watch?v=QCMqECKokMg&mode=related&search=

I sincerely hope you all enjoy them.
See ya,

I feel obligated to post this one as well, simply because it is so popular.  A little melodramatic for me, and I can't stand the music personally (although it fits the film).  This is a great example of a movie telling a story:

Yeah I should install FSX again, I've never tried it with my new rig and the last time I played it was on my 4 year old system.  Turning the graphics up should make me happy.

Did you like the 'Five PM' video, or am I just crazy?

It cracks me up so totally.

It didn't crack me up, other than the premise of drag racing jets on the Vegas strip :D

But I liked it too.

The 'Danger Zone' one cracked me up.  I loved how he was humming some of the words.  Ha ha ha, :lol

Dangerzone was funny, but there was a sequel (this one with subtitles!)

Nice find Krusty!

I wish there were subtitle for the first one, I'm sure missing the words was sorta killing the whole bit.

The production was so cool though.

Maybe some French guy will see this thread and be kind enough to translate?

I'll watch the link when I get a break long enough for 12 minutes.

Some of you might find this interesting- it's a promo for an add-on for MSFS, Kai Tak airport in Hong Kong.

The Navy has this thing where we periodically show the flag in foreign countries to sort of establish and keep a precedence for flying into and out of a particular country.  So, periodically, we fly P-3's into Hong Kong and I was lucky enough to be on a crew to fly one of the flights.

When we learned we were flying there I was pretty excited because I had heard that there was this airport that was supposed to be some sort of incredibly challenging approach.  However, when we actually checked it out and then flew the approach, I wasn't overly impressed.  Apparently Kai Tak had been replaced by a new airport with a more sensible approach.

Still, it WAS pretty challenging.  I was flying 2P and my friend Neil shot the approach.  We got vectors from Approach and 10-15 miles out we started getting ready for the approach and started slowing down to our approach speed.  Approach comes on and says, "Dragon 23, maintain speed."  So we're shooting the approach at about 249 kts.  A P-3 doesn't slow down immediately, no speed breaks or anything, so it was full-on.  We got as close as we felt we could push it and then went idle and threw everything but the kitchen sink out to slow down, dirty up, and get the plane on deck.

When we got on deck, it was chaos.  I have never, ever, heard so much chatter on ground freq, and it was just insane trying to figure out parking.  Like, we rolled out and had about 2 seconds to figure out which taxiway we were on, which way to turn, and don't even think about slowing down during taxi.

It was crazy enough at whatever airport Hong Kong fields now, I can't even imagine what Kai Tak was like.

Anyway, hope y'all find it interesting.

Here, of course, is my own video:
http://www.vimeo.com/970072

Which was inspired, sort of, by this video which is a trailer of some movie called ''Speed and Angels".  I used this as an idea of sort of the chaotic nature of dogfighting, although I don't feel like I captured it as well as I liked.  Still, the video I made does capture the vision I had.

Hi folks.

Here is another OT video that I feel "is worthy".  This is from FSX, but is truly different, original, and awesome in general.

edit:  it gets awesome-er towards the end.  If you find yourself bored- skip towards the last few minutes.  The footage with the Hornet is really nicely done.
