Hey Ya PPL
I am sure a lot of you are aware of this, but for those like me who dont spend much time in in the Cruisers 8" guns you will find this interesting...
Did you know that the 8" guns on the Cruiser can hit targets almost a sector away...
How you may ask, well by using the land mode option and clicking on the map the guns are aimed automatically...
I have successfully shelled bases and strat targets from over 25k..
Its a pity the cruiser does not have a fire control station that would allow you to control the three 8" turrets, cause Man you could deliver some BVR hell to a field with all three...
Last night, I managed to hit most of the barracks at A12(iirc) from well over 25K.
I even got a kill on some poor sap taking off... I was waiting for the "your a cheater" comment and was even going to send a text directly to my victim, cause i just know he was sitting there with a WTF!!!! look on his face...
Anyway its good to be back, even with all the smack talking and whining...
See you in the sky's... then again maybe you wont see me just my shells lol
-
I prefer to wait until the cruiser is closer in, atleast around 16k and under, this way I can see where my shells are landing and adjust my targeting, this way tends to be more accurate.

When in a cv gun you hit the "W" or "E" to toggle between land & sea mode. you can also zoom in on your map and click where you want the gun to aim, and it will automaticly aim to that point.
-
So sea mode would be used for Killing aircraft? I rarely use cv guns, unless shelling a town.
-
Land mode will shoot at the same spot reguardless of the CV groups movement and heading changes
Sea mode will not adjust the target position to compensate for the CV Groups movement and heading changes, I think it is for shooting at a moving target like another CV group.
of course if you are in land mode, there is a limit to just how far a gun can turn, so if you in the one of the front 8 inch turrets and the cv turns away from your target you may not be able to still hit it
-
also when in land or sea mode you can adjust you target by moving the controler, it will show you how much you have adjusted your position onscreen, i am not sure what mesurement they used feet meters yards ect, but if you zoom you map right in and (in land mode W) click on one edge of a field, fire then the other edge of the filed the adjusted range is around 900 (yards ? i assume)
If you want to take direct control of the gun press Q
this also works for the 5" guns but the have only around 10k range, you will know if your target is out of range because the guns elevation and bearing will not change when you click on the map.
Also if you use the 5" guns press your secondary ammunition selector (backspace for me) and you can switch between AA shells and HE shells
The AA shells have a proximity fuse and thats why the are so good at hitting buffs ect, cause you only have to get your shell NEAR the target...
I dont know how viable they are for use on building ect, but if you were to shell a filed with AA shels (5 inch only) then anyone taking off or landing NEAR your shell will have a bad day.

You used to be able to bombard A42 from A43's shore battery. Haven't tried it since AH1 so I don't know if you still can but it used to be fun. The enemy would scour the waters looking for a fleet that wasn't there.

LOL that reminds me the other night (cant think of the map name) I was able to do the that, I was shelling a port from a base to the south....
Just got to get a squad of CV nuts togeather and get all the guns manned....
Hell we could get two CV groups togeather and a cap going then we could Rule the map..... !!!
Oh dear I think i need professional help :P
-
I would enjoy being one of those CV 8" wielding nuts :)
-
I told my wife I want to play with 8 inches... she told me to go see her ex
:p

18,300 yards, Hangars going down :)
-
Range I believe is 28.2 k in land mode
-
Spawn camping with the 8" guns is amusing as well. Close is normally close enough.
-
using land mode and a spotter I sank an enemy cv with an 8 inch from 30.6k.

And on the Baltic map you can shell one of the ports from the large field on that island up north.

Max range I believe for the main gun on a cruiser and shore battery is 26k. Don't think you will be able to hit something 30k away, the round won't travel that far.
