"I need a pick... a big heavy one"

"Just one?"

"Two would be better."

James Garner was always one of the most entertaining actors to watch.  I think he was always way underrated.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind watching a remake movie, but who could pull off playing Jim Rockford after Garner?

"Well, I don't know why not. I've never made any secret of the fact that basically I'm on my way to Australia. And I don't think I'm gonna find a better time to get started than right now. Besides, uh, I don't like the odds."

Great song, great car, great stories.

Garner was perfect for it.

Anyone know he was a race car driver?   Hurt his leg?

See him in Barbarians at the Gate?  Great flick.

Garner was not just A race car driver, but one of the best. A top finisher at LeMans, Sebring, and Daytona, as well as Baja. Used to keep a nice collection of some serious GM muscle iron, and GMC used to custom build his trucks. He used to own a couple of real nice 1969 Lola T70 coupes, that were front runners in the 12 and 24 hour races. Lola built them especially for Garner, and GM had the engines built for him in their "back door" racing program. He had a mid engine Olds Toronado as well, it also came out the "back door" at GM.

I heard Russ Martin interview him once. They talked about his racing and the "Rockford" turn. He said when he signed to do Gran Prix they made him go to Bob Bondurant's school. Bondurant taught him well. He did all of his own driving from that point on.

BTW anyone know Jim Rockford's license plate number? (NO GOOGLING!!)

Stop by your local video store and rent Grand Prix....

Yes, Garner did his own F1 driving in the film.

Besides, you'll see icons of F1. Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Lorenzo Bandini (died at Monaco the next year), Jackie Stewart, Jack Brabham, John Surtees and a host of others.

Once you get past the required romantic interludes, the driving and photography are amazing.

Also, try to find Steve McQueen's epic, Le Mans.

You can get both as a package from Amazon for $27.

My regards,
