I would ask, in all seriousness, how much established religions have corrupted his / her message and laws.

I believe in the overall message of the Bible but I think a lot has been edited out by the hand of man.

Incredible. I am stunned. Seriously.

I am an Atheist. (Hammer and a Sickle doesn't mean I am, I hope you understand it).

So far the strangest, irrational, unpredictable people I have met are Purely Religious.

What do you think is more important: not to wish someone's wife or simply not being an *******?

Meeting Religious People I shoud say that for them following 10 rules is more important then following unwritten rules of co-existance or co-operation. They may annoy anyone and play on my nerves without thinking 'cause they don't kill and don't worship idols. And that's OK for them.

So my question is: comrade Christian God, why did You give some silly rules to folks who have to better employ their brains and soul insead?!

boroda... I believe in god but am not religious...  I freely admit that I have no proof that my god exists.   I simply have faith that he does.

We have a lot in common....you and I.... our faith...

you really don't know that god does not exist but you have a fervent faith that it is so.

We both have a faith based belief system on god.   We probly preach about the same amount. on our beliefs...

you do it to look cool tho.  Or out of anger (comments on all religious types for instance).

one other difference is that my god gave me the strength to no longer be a slave to alcohol.   Athiesm tends to not offer much in the strength regard.

Plus... it is like so.....  70's to be an athiest anyway.

Oh, don't be silly Lazs.  That people don't believe the same thing you do doesn't make them posers, it just means that they don't believe what you do.  Stop trying to build yourself up by stepping on other folks.

Back to the question of the thread, I'd ask "What's the best, most satisfying, and useful piece of information you can give me?"

chair...  did you not read his post?   now tell me he was not "tearing down others"

I was merely stating the truth as I see it.   I have seen the exact behavior in every athiest I have talked to.   Maybe that is because... to actually bother to proclaim your athiesm is a huge leap.

most who doubt are content to simply say that they don't know... this is an attitude that I can find no fault with... agnostic... a reasonable and scientific way to be.

I admit my faith is not in the least reasonable and hope that I don't bother people with it too much.   It does seem to anger some tho.  even tho I rarely bring it up and never unless asked or unless it is a vital part of a conversation.

I claim no special knowledge and do not even claim that I am right... only that I believe I am right.

contrast that with athiesm.   with borodas brand for instance.

I admit that many of the trapings and ritual of religion seem odd to me but... they may be right for all I know... I doubt it but am sure that I will see soon enough.

I just find that athiesm has such a dishonest context to it... an agenda that is apparent but hidden.  A certain anger that is just below the surface..  It busts out once in a while "if god is so good then why did the crusades happen?" kind of thing.   translated it means... "why does god make me and mine suffer?"   Or... "why doesn't he show himself to me?"

I have gone from catholic (school) to athiest to agnostic to my current belief system.   I believe it is evolutionary.   I know what I was when I was all of those things.

I think an agnostic is really what most atheists really are...  I doubt that there is a very big group who are faith based athiests.

I really do believe that many so called athiests say they are just to get the reaction... good or bad.. depending on who they are speaking to.

There's nothing mysterious about being scared of the unknown. At the same time, admitting that something is unknown is, in itself, not an admission that something great lies behind it.

Just a thought.

Lazs, I think you feel threatened by the calm, self assured lack of belief folks like me have.  Lashing out at that 'threat' is a natural reaction, but something you should be able to avoid as a thinking, rational being.

The 'intellectually dishonest' phrase you keep rolling out is as worn as the leather on my busted wallet, and about as structurally sound.  Why does lack of belief in a god irritate you so much?  Is it perhaps that you:

A: consider yourself rational
B: have a belief that can't be explained through evidence
and
C: there are other folks who, by choosing not to believe, make you worried that you may not be as rational as you think you are?

It's like the person who thinks of themself as a liberal who finds themselves talking with a communist and feels threatened by someone who has taken the belief even further.  Or a person who thinks that they're super conservative who talks to a fascist, and sees someone who's even more "extreme"?

Agnosticism is a fine, wish-washy way of saying "Well, I want to cover my bases, _just in case_".  I'm not agnostic about the Easter Bunny (I don't light a candle for him _just in case_ he exists), I just don't think it's real.  Same with teh god.

What's the difference?  And why do you lash out so much?
Title: If you could ask God one question...
Post by: FBBone on August 14, 2007, 11:26:27 AM
Chair, my take on lazs "lashing out" is this:

Boroda took a pot shot at religious people, lazs returned in kind.

I don't see it so much as lashing out, rather , calling out.

chair... I see it the way fb sees it.  I have no allies in religious people and rarely mention my belief.

I simply find that people who claim that "athiest" is a rational way of thinking founded in something other than pure faith is silly.

I don't mind that there are athiests.. they are welcome to their faith but... to claim it is anything but faith?

My take is.. an agnostic admits that he doesn't know and has no faith that god exists or does not.

a theist... believes there is a god.. he does so with his faith.

an atheist...  says there can be no god and he says this because he has faith that it is true even tho the possibility of a god is very high.. that it has never been disproved.

I will commend you tho...  You used to start threads attacking.. or maybe simply trying to discredit religion... and now you do not.   You saying that I am the attacker here is kind of ironic tho given that you won't even admit your faith is simply that.   Given your not so distant past practice of starting anti religion threads.

I of course... have never started a thread attacking your religion of athiesm..  I simply want you to admit that you have the faith... the calling brother of your faith... otherwise...

you are just a puffed up agnostic...

An athiest is not just a more hard core agnostic.  An athiest is the real deal... his faith gets him through...

Unlike the agnostic... he doesn't even have to think about it because... unlike an agnostic or an honest scientist... he has an unshakeable faith...

it may be the opposite faith of a theist but it is every bit as zealous and founded in faith.

all i would be able to do is fall to my knees and beg for forgiveness, and any one who believes they could stand toe to toe with GOD has no concept of truth.

Ink, if god exists, then the abilities you have are his wish, right?  The capability of thought and curiosity, even with that whole misunderstanding about the apple, are the result of his wish.

With that in mind, how happy would you make your god if you just mewled for forgiveness instead of using your noggin to make best use of the opportunity?

Presumably, he "receives" your thoughts and prayers and absolutions 24x7, I doubt he'd be terribly satisfied that Man, his greatest creation (just paraphrasing the scriptures here) would WASTE that opportunity to do something he can do any other time?

If you built a hotrod, and it could only honk its horn, would you be satisfied with that?

if god does exist he's not gonna listen to any of us. he created the mechanisms of the universe(s). anything beyond that is evolution. heck, he's probably out creating new universes right now. life is a very small part of this universe, and earth is even smaller.

i don't really believe in god but something had to make all this from nothing.

Wait, if God is of the opposite gender, can we ask for sex?

You know if he/she made it so good they must enjoy it, or at least support its propagation.

Either way, there must certainly be a sense of humor up there, and the flattery may buy you brownie points.

Again, that would be a request, not a question (unless of course you're just asking for an answer as to whether you can have whatever you're asking for, and not the actual thing itself)...

However, if this thread allows a request, I'd just ask for god's job and pretty much call it a day. Granted, I'd suck at it pretty hard, but, then again, what would I care if the world turned to ****? When all was said and done, I'd still be god.

no words can express your pain,
the one thought that comes to mind,(and yes ive had very close family members die most of us have) is now they wont be ruined by this very messed up world,  when i was 10 years old my brother died he was 14, he was the only one that treated me good,  i loved him very much.
now i thank GOD for taking him out of this EVIL world,  it does not get rid of the pain but it helps.
i would say they were to innocent for this world.

i am sorry for your loss

If you could ask God one question...
the situation you describe would be that you are 100% aware god exists?
if so, i doubt you would have any more question from that moment on.

"What else should I be asking you?"

I'd ask it "Why?". It would already know the subject matter because it's God fer crying out loud.

Tough one,

It'd either have to be 'what is Jessica Alba's cell phone number?', 'if you could do it all again, what would you change', or simply 'paper, scissors, rock?'.

I think Jessica would get the nod.

/*Deleted explainations about why I used "comrade" here*/

Communists and Liberals will always have incredible difficulty understanding Choice.

My question: What is your favorite beer?

chair... now you are being silly... take the easter bunny for instance.  I am not prepared to say that somewhere some time some rabbit has not or will not hide eggs of chicken.

I am not prepared to say for certain that there are no aliens or ghosts or esp or conspiracies...

I don't think it is probable and have no strong feelings either way... no faith.

I am agnostic on those things.. they are unimportant to me.

I would be very suspicious of anyone who said that those things were not possible and believed that 100%... he would not be a logical person..

he might even possibly be dishonest about it or.. he may have an agenda.. a form of dishonesty itself.

most logical people simply say that they don't know.. how could they?   some of course say that they have seen these things or that they simply have "faith" that they exist.

And athiest is just an angry little boy whistling in the dark as he passes a graveyard and telling everyone he is not afraid.

He is not in the least calm and detached about the subject... he is a believer.. the agnostic is not "wishy washy"  he sees a universe that can not be explained by man and says... "I don't know what created it all"  He sees that it is very possible that a god may have but he has no faith that it is true.

An athiest says... "I don't know what has created all this but I have faith that it can not be a god"   He says this because that is what he wants it to be.  He says it because he doesn't like theists and because he is angry or jealous that he has no faith in a god.   He takes an opposite position to them and lashes out... constantly looking for ways to make fun of those of faith.

You are correct tho.. he does not sit on the fence... he does not use logic other than to compare god with the easter bunny.   A silly comparison...  meaningless.

It would amount to him having to admit that there is a possibility of god if someone ..... somewhere... found a bunny that hid eggs or a bigfoot or a ghost or whatever.

It is also fun to see that all athiests have something that they believe in that can not be proven or has not.. something they believe based on faith...

bigfoot... the grassy knoll... aliens...  esp... man made global warming...  socialism can work...

some oddball notion that is based on nothing but faith.. hypocrites abound in the athiest community.
