Title: Dog Food?
Post by: rogwar on August 14, 2007, 05:24:34 PM
Just curious as to what you have found best?

We have been feeding our now 14 month old a mixture of Life's Abundance and Purina Pro Plan. The breeder uses Life's Abudance and our vet recommended Pro Plan. We got a bag of both free (one from the breeder and one from vet) so I just mixed it together in the storage container. She has been doing well and her coat is great as well as top health reports from the vet.

However, I don't plan to keep feeding a mix....or should I?

I've tried researching online but there does not seem to be any independent source for reviews or reliable overall research. It's more marketing to humans than anything.

I've read that any dog food is fine as long as 2 of the first 5 ingredients are meat and/or meat byproducts. Dog food with any color additives are unnecessary since dogs only see black and white. The color is added to make it more pleasing to the human eye and some dogs can have allergic reactions to it.

Elfie thats not true, dogs can see colors too, not as bright as humans
eyes (aprox 5 times less). But i doubt the dog-food companys making
a nice (package) food-design because dogs can see colors ;)

We have cats &  dogs, we use often but not only food from Hill's Pet Nutrition.

Interesting, apparently fairly recent research has determined that dogs are not in fact color blind. I did a google search and you are correct Ghosth. I stand corrected. :)

Sheesh, dog food's not a laughing matter :p

I've used Purina Pro, the dogs seemed to like it and thrive OK, but IMO Science Diet is more better. Try it out.

Check your list of ingredients.

According to a trainer I know,if one of the first two listed is corn meal, then the food contains a lot of filler.Corn meal shouldn't be listed until the 3rd or 4th.She also had nothing good to say about Purina. She claimed Purina is very inconsistent with it's ingredients, changing the amounts and quality often to save  as much money as possible.

I feed my dogs what she recommended,Natural Choice Nutro.
