Title: A thought
Post by: Dichotomy on August 14, 2007, 11:07:21 PM
I don't want to expose my ignorance and, perhaps there's something in my settings that I haven't fixed yet, but would it be possible to show the players name with the enemy planes in the AVA arena?

I ask this because if I'm going hth against oldman or any of the other regulars I know I'm not going to get HO'd, picked, or vulched.  Whereas if its a name I don't recognize I can react accordingly.

Tonight I shot a reg on the first merge.  Not a ho but generally considered a chicken@#% shot and I, after looking at and thinking about it, felt it was inappropriate on my part.  I should have, if I had known who I was flying against, reset the merge and gone hth in the way that is generally accepted in the ava.  Tonight I was the dweeb.

It's just a thought but let's say for instance that dichodweeb just ho'd me on the last merge I know to fly MA tactics against him.  If Oldman, Storch, Dedalos, TC, etc...,  and I are going HTH I know he's not pulling the trigger and neither should I.

I think this could help the AVA keep the 'culture' correct and drive off the dweebs while attracting the kind of pilots that crave what the unwritten rules are there for.

Not only that but I think it would attract more of the quality sticks and, though I hate to use this term, intimidate most of the scoretards from flying in this arena when it's populated.

Badly worded on my part but I hope yall get the general idea.

IMHO, I look at the AvsA as the FR arena of old, or the beginning days of AW's Fighter Town when it was set to just FR mode only......

when I say FR days of old, I mean the low numbered days when 20 to 30 was  an AWESOME feat of numbers logged in at the same time......

I look at the MA of AH as the silly Arena what I personally would refer to as RR of that old sim....

The AvsA arena is heading in the right direction  with a few hicups here and there....just give it a little time.......I see that the AvsA has done like a 180 turnaround from almost 1 year ago, and 90% of it is for the better.......

not quite like the Original CT of the early days but it is well on its way to being as good if not better.......

it just takes the community peers to set the standard, Guppy had posted of this once before along with a few others not to long ago, The regulars set the etiquette/gameplay, and should as a group approve or disapprove of one players behavior....

Thansk AvsA Staff and keep the good match ups a coming,  they are greatly appreciated ~S~

I don't think there's a setting (available to us, at least) that would accomplish this, Dicho.  I wouldn't worry about it, all of us from time to time take a shot that we're sorry for later on.  I think everyone understands that.

AND:  don't let the bad manners of others drag you down!  HOs, in particular, are generally bad tactics anyway.  Even in AvA I seldom really trust that the approaching plane isn't going to fire on the merge.  If it does, then I can be pretty certain that it's a new visitor who simply needs to be assimilated.

I know it sounds like a good idead but you know one day you will piss someone off.  If they can see your name you will be cherry picked all day long  (And for some reason I just thought of Storch. hmmm)

TC
I agree, the AvA has been a lot better lately.  I think that may be the plane sets and the numbers.  Last time that I saw 30 people in there it worst than the MA has ever been.  Maybe the key is the plane sets and the low numbers?

OM
You are too nice.  Its not just the new guys that come in guns blazing, ganking, picking, stealing.  Come to think of it, I dont see any new guys in there that often

best to fly like every plane will HO

Ho definition varies too. Some (me) thinks it is the H2H on the initial merge and after that anything goes ..
others think any shot from 9 o'clock through 3 o'clock taken at anytime is a HO ... these are usually spit drivers :)

and if the odds are greater than 2 v 1 with me being the 1, anything goes.

Not picking on you.  i just want to understand why.  If you are H2H on the second merge, to me it is no different than the first merge.  It is a tie.  No one gained anythign and you try again.  Why try to end it there based on luck or because the other guy did not pull the triger?  Wouldn't you rather fight for a few more seconds?  Isn't this why we log in every day?

If I am head to head on the second merge I will not fire as in a 109f I usually lose in a HO. But if I come around faster than the other guy and have a shot say from a high 2 oc position, I'll squeeze off a lead burst.
Some seem to think that is a HO.

I try NOT to HO ever but that's just me.  Not saying I don't occasionally when going for an angle shot as someone comes around but if we are wings level nose to nose I'm not shooting.

Last night was a good example of if you stick around long enough you'll draw a crowd.  Ltarget was cheerfully slapping me around for about 30 minutes then the next thing you know we had a pretty good group of guys going at it.

No matter what it's always fun.  To me at least :D

And NO, Dicho -- that was not a HO last night.

You dove in on me with a good alt advantage, flying a zeke. I was in a climbing Corsair. When I saw you make the move, I leveled for a sec to get a little speed and then tried to climb above your "leveling out" altiftude so you'd go under me. It was a defensive move, and I hoped to evade that attack and get your speed down so I could work a little.

But I couldnt climb quite enough, and you nipped my tailfeathers. You took off my vertical stabilizer and an elevator...which just about proves it was NOT a head on.  Your nose was pointed below my flight path, pulling up towards my tail, and mine was pointed above your path behind your tail. I did not have a shot to take. This was NOT a HO pass at all.

My initial reaction was from frustration. Even though our noses were both at each others' 12:00, the vertical difference meant you did NOT give me a HO, and I said so in the next text line. We fly, we fight, stuff happens....don't give it a thought.

(After all, my next 2 sorties ended with collisions -- and that means I deserve "RAM tard" more than you deserve "Ho Meister" anyway!)

cc. thats not a HO

I think last nights fights kind of show that maybe the next set up of P40s vs 0s need to be rethought off?  Im afraid no one will be in the P40s.  Unless I am wrong about the set up

Yes but you were right that it was a first merge shot which is kind of unseemly in both of our books which is what made me think about the being able to see the other guy's name thought.

I know how you fly so it's only fair for me to extend the courtesy back to you.  Flip side is if I'm flying against someone that generally takes a first merge shot I know to take any shot I get.

What would be really nice is if I saw the name B@tfink, Oldman, Storch, etc above the red plane I'd know to run like a fat kid after a donut ;)

I dont HO first second hell not even 2mins into a fight. If the other guy can shoot me and I can shoot him than whats the point? A HO is a HO and its a clear sign of desperation and lack of skill.

Gotta admit that if names were shown, some people would attract swarms dedicated to their destruction....

Heh. You guys are the reason I like the AvA. Good fight, never mind lose or win, it's the friendly attitude that all of you in this thread have been showing.

I've had a lot of bad nights in the MA's but I can't remember a bad night in the AVA.   I always get a brand new airplane with no bullet holes :D

I was having a rare "good night" :D.

When I arrived, there was one other player (Goldwngs??)who was practicing his bombing.  We had a couple fights, but he quickly left.  By that time, "Cubby" had shown up and was having fun doing KI67 runs on the CV and popping anyone who came near.  There was also "Luckysht" (love the name) for a brief period, but he had stick trouble and left.  But at that point Dicho had arrived, so my night could continue!  Dedalos showed up after a bit, as did TCFkas.  I know Oldman showed too . . . unfortunately, I had to log at about that point, so I don't know how much it grew past that.

Through all the time I was on, there was at most 3 on a side, and only 1 per side most of the time.  And still, it was a blast!  Panzerr said it best:

ah...dicho you were the single biggest risk i took in my 'timid flying' P38 the other night. fighting your zeke was a huge rush, i was so close to toast on 5 or so occasions, and starting the fight slightly below you i had no choice but to fight.

we went round n round and up n down for a long time then, just as i thought i had fouled up and you were going to rip me apart you got into a hard stall spin and lost 2000ft, enabling me to make use of the uber 38L and BnZ to conclusion.

i for one know that you would never run from a good 1 on 1 fight in AvA even if you knew the guys cpid before hand. you dont give yourself enough credit sir, a fine cartoon pile it you are.

S!
