Up here in Bangor, Maine my airport sees a lot of military traffic.
I'm used to the British Harrier and Tornado traffic as well as the F-15/F-16/F-18s that frequently pass thru.
These guys just lifted...KC-135 (note the drogue refueler) and I think 3 Mirages. I'm wondering which models?
They were hauling so my camera pix are a bit less than desired.

Mirage 2000
-
look like mirages to me too - dunno the model though
-
Two Armee de l'air Mirage 2000s and a C135FR tanker which is French too.
They fighters both look like two seaters.
It seems the entente cordiale is back on with the USA.
You're lucky to be living so close to a base with an eclectic mix of military aircraft overflying. My country doesn't even have jet fighters. I have to get excited when I see a PC-9 fly over:(

Didn't you guys see Iron Eagle ? Those are Mig 24-3/4s

Heard the "Maine" boys on the radio the other day with Boston Center when they finished fueling some fighters. The fighter lead came up on VHF (not always happens...) and didn't sound American. I guess this is why :)
I think the callsign of the fighter lead was Polo-11. The tanker of course was "Maine XX" but the Polo (I think...could've been Bolo I guess) lead had an accent.
-
Golfer- Who are you currently flying for that you get to play around with the -190?
-
Why are the French and British in Maine? Was it a international Cold War base, that is just still used by the French, British, and U.S., or is it a base for the French and British to use for target practicing since in their countries they have such limite land to do these things?
I wish I could get a live view of some Mirages. I think Mirages are just beautiful aircraft ment to kill and destroy.

NATO probably

Yup Mirage 2000's. Could be some sort of training like Red Flag, Maple Flag or something going on
-
I've heard that fighters with delta-wings produce excess amounts of drag at high angles of attack, thus making them poor dog-fighters.

Loose lips, sink ships.

You give them miniwings at the front and they do just fine :D
-
Aquashrimp,
They are actually very good dogfighters. It is true that they bleed energy faster, but the delta gives them higher achievable AOA before stalling. They are rather light/small, and their roll rate is rather fast. Agility is one of the strong point of the M2000.
Back in Ellington Field, TX, I briefly talked to a F16 Agressor pilot, who's one foundest memory was to intercept a couple of Mirage 2000 Ds (2 seaters ground attack) at Red Flag 95. He caught them a bit too late, they already blew the target up, and to his surprise rather than escaping, one engaged him. After a "short but epic" dogfight, he got "shot down".
Edit: Lepaul, notice the French refuel using the soft trailing hose, they don't use the boom like the US. I guess fighter pilots like to make their life harder.

Mirage 2000s dogfight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNuA4c-jCE4
Pretty good movie too.
-
It was weird to see the French pilots were dubbed with American accents for the English version. Nice flying shots but in the 'Top Gun' school of realism when it comes to dogfighting. Even in AH we don't get that close in dogfighting, unless you count the guy I clipped wings with today.
Frenchy I believe the armee de l'air 135s can use the boom for refueling but obviously it has to be modified on the ground in advance. I seem to remember a picture of one refueling a Belgian F16.
I really like the lines of the Mirage types. They really have a certain, 'Je ne sais quoi'.
Ghi, that's one of the best UFO shots ever, obviously hoaxed but brilliant right down to little hum as they passed over. Even the gasp from the woman was brilliantly understated. 'I want to believe'.
-
The flight scenes of Skyfighters are really visually stuning, sadly the scinematic effects have to totaly obliterate any hint of realisum as far as tactics/weapons. The story is also a lame pretext to an aviation movie. :o

does this have anything to do with Sarkozy's visit to maine? escorting Armee de l'air Un?

Golfer: Thanks for that, the Tanker I saw the day before had "Alabama" painted on the tail. I didn't notice if that tanker was one of ours (Maineiacs) or not. With the base closures of late, we received some KC-135s to augment our fleet. These are turbofan models and most of what is here is still turbojets. They are now converting over. Living one mile off the approach end of 33...I sure can't wait :)
AwMac: You're an idiot. Loose lips on pics of Mirages? Ok. Maybe your PTSD is flaring up?
Raider: We get a lot of NATO and other birds in from overseas. Its ot uncommon to have 4 Israeli F-15s in town one day, a huge Russian Antov cargo bird the next.

Video of a M2000D with engine malfunction at FL550 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dt-wWuzqFsc&mode=related&search=)
They "glide" home, and shoot an IFR approach :O. (Video in French)
I like how they keep their cool.

US Navy uses probe and drogue also. It's a pretty well known fact that the USAF prefers to receive.:lol

lol
Britain and France are small compared with the US, but its usually possible to find little pockets of land over which to practice. Small, dinky areas like, say, Scotland for example.

Thats just wrong to say. PTSD isnt a thing to make fun of.
those are nice jets.

Hopefully nobody by the end of next week ;) Had an informal phone "interview" cleverly disguised as a BS session with the CP of a Lear 45...it's a great gig.

we have a lot of american activity as well including a usaf galaxy that landed here 2 days ago, we frequently disptach groups to the usa and allways have a few planes rep at redflag.
