To another country
Where would it be and why?
Personally, I'm not sure, but I think I'd give Australia a serious look.
-
Mexico, because its close to home, familiar, and I am comfortable with the culture.
-
Germany. I know the language, have family there, and they have great por^H^H^Hfood.
-
Not enough details, neubob. Why or who from the person needs to relocate would be important. Access to financial resources has to be known. You can't just take a wad of cash out of the country into another. Will currency exchange be necessary? How will you transfer money? Will the person need to work? Are extradition treaties important to the discussion? Will the mob be paying you in cash for this advice?
All those things, and more, have to be considered.
You don't think you can just take a flight to Australia and be relocated, right? ;)

Really? There's more to it than that? Like what?
I just figured they'd give me a house and a job and all I'd have to do was adapt to that funky accent.
-
Germany
-
Australia would be a good choice for me, but I also like Germany, was stationed there for 4 years, great food, great beer, good lookin women, a fest almost every weekend and an almost perfect spot to be centrally located and tour Europe.
-
My bad. Since it's you relocating, I think they'd throw in a bloody car or two, mate.
-
Belize. Located just south of Mexico it's the only english speaking country in Central America and is a member of the British Commonwealth with a stable government. It has the 2nd largest barrier reef in the world and boasts awesome diving and fishing. The dollar is based 2 to 1 on the American dollar. You can take all your belongings tax free. You can live there tax free after age 45. It has some of the nicest white sand beaches in the world, many for sale at rediculously low prices. The total population is under 300,000.

Since I went to the trouble of buying a ticket and all, I'm expecting a nice plot on the coast too.
Australia is English speaking, first of all. Secondly, given my education, I think I could find decent work there. Their economy is strong, education levels decent, and real estate can still be purchased at decent prices without having to compromise too much. Finally, their social values aren't too far off from what I'm used to, and from what I've heard, the place is beautiful.
The hole in the ozone and the high incidence rate of skin cancer troubles me, as does the influx of immigrants from poor Arab nations.
There, now that I plugged that hole, why don't you answer the question.

Probably the most democratic government in the West. Taxes are only moderately higher than in the US, and the highest percentage goes to the region or village where you are from.
I was amazed when my co-worker told me that citizens can challenge laws/initiatives passed by the government by collecting 50,000 signatures which places the challenge on the next election ballot. If you want a new law passed, you collect 100,000 signatures.

New Zealand. I dig the views.
Belize is really nice too.

Norway. Consistently ranks as one of the best places in the world to live.
Canada, specifically Toronto. I personally like the region and can still ride my motorcycles in the lower 48.
Austria based on central European location and scenic beauty.... quick hops over der border to places such as Prague, Munich, Budapest, Bern, Venice, Stuttgart....

Bermuda, the weather is nice, i can almost speak the language, i can wear shorts and ride motor scooters.:D

And disappear when you look into the Bermuda triangle.

Japan
- Cleanest place in the world (err probably 2nd to Singapore)
- Almost crime-free
- Advanced transportation and internet infrastructure.
- Advanced electronic gadgets unseen in the western world.

Australia - an incredible country!...
I was born and spent my childhood in Leningrad, so Aussie attitude fits me. "What? Who cares, mate?!" :) People talking to me in the streets, just out of curiosity, without any particular reason.
Bumper sticker "So many fish, so few sickies!".
I spent almost 2 months there, and I was impressed by the people much more then by nature or weather.
The only disappointment I had was when in Sydney in a bar at the King's Cross I ordered a double-vodka. It was served in a boiling-hot glass! :) Maybe bartender just checked me, but with my experience I just waited for a glass to chill down so I'll not burn my lips and swallowed it smiling :D
-
Maybe Texas, that is a whole differant country than the rest of the USA. Not better, but at least they speak a version of English, food is either beef or Mexican, and they now have air conditioning so you don't have your brains fry. :D
-
No where...I have guns.

I'd get a Europa train pass & make a vacation of it.

In Japan a hamburger costs $118.08.

I'll stick with Belize.
-
I think I wouldnt mind not having a hamburger if I could read all that Manga :)
-
lol
That's the exchange rate - 118 yen per dollar. A cheeseburger costs 100 yen (85 cents) in Japan. When you consider that kids make about $9 per hour working there, pay substantially less taxes than in the US, have health insurance and the average family has over $100,000 cash in savings, it isn't too bad a price.
Australia sounds like a choice until the statute of limitations expires. :D
I thought you were an immigrant already. Did you lose your visa?
-
You guys (except Neubob ;)) have to try Russia.
Should be much easier then Japan. Seriously.
Depends on what you want.

D'OH! I read the wrong column. The correct price according to the chart is $2.37, about the same as the US.
-
No it's 100 yen, rpm. That list is wrong. Don't worry about screwing up exchange rates. I have a tough time too when I go to Thailand or almost anywhere.
-
The Danes seem to have their shxt together, so I'd consider Denmark.
I also have relatives there so I wouldn't be pressed to immediately learn the language.
No way I'd relocate to the UK... That place is just as screwed up as the US.
I have a few friends who plan on retiring in Thailand, having married nice cute Thai girls while stationed in the Pacific. There are benefits to being the only one in a hundred square miles with a college education and standing 4-6 inches taller than the natl average.

Rolex, they don't believe anyone who's not on American TV. Intellectual majority is the same everywhere.
In Narita they trade around 100 Yen for a dollar. And they accept US dollars, but don't accept Euros, Aussie dollars or Russian rubles (This is really unfair!!! ;)) in stores...
We Russians have some experience, I mean - people who remember Soviet times, not young kids. One ruble now is 1000 old Soviet rubles, and a monthly salary of 120 rubles in Soviet times is about 20000 "modern" rubles now. We calculate exchange rates in our minds as Cray supercomputers :)

What about the Far East Russia, is there economic development there?

If I was forced to leave Australia and move somewhere else, I guess it would have to be wherever it was they extradite me to, because it sure wouldn't be happening by my choice.
Where the bloody hell are yas? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=411ueiat2sY) <-prolly not real work safe F word in use.
if nothin' else, at least we can have a laugh at ourselves.
-
Australia would be cool if there weren't soooooo many creepy crawlies that can kill you.
somewhere in the Caribbean would be nice, money goes a long way, hot tourists all the time, great climate, and relaxed generally.
I have never been to Europe, Asia, or anything so I can't say for sure, though Spain seems nice from pictures, and Japan seems intriguing, but Japan especially there seems to be cultural boundaries I don't know I could get over.
that and I don't really like eating seafood at all. I can live with some fresh grilled fish in the Caribbean, but that's about all I will eat.
In fact it does seem much of the rest of the world relies on seafood ALOT more than the Midwest US, something I would not be fond of at all.
-
I relocated to Disneyland just over two years ago. Pretty happy all in all. Cost of living is a little lower, the weather's nice and the people generally have a much healthier attitude to life and work than back home. Tax seems awfully high given the lack of any kind of health care or pension provision and the quality of the roads sucks.
The major problem with relocating is that involves much more frequent and in-depth contact with useless government agencies than any person should have to deal with. My own experience has been with US agencies, but I've no reason top believe anywhere else would be any better.

Vladivostok. Beautiful town with gorgeous surroundings. Mixture of classic European and Asian influence. It's developing steadily in terms of economy and industry. Real estate is getting expensive, though, and maintaining a car can be hellish. If you can stand the extreme cold, and the odd phenomenon of driving on the right side of the road in a right hand drive car, I'd say it's a candidate.

What I mean: foreigners don't understand some peculiar dangers, but it's the reason why they never get in trouble. Feeling self-confident and sometimes saying "Ja ja volkswagenhitlerkaput!" or "doyouspeakenglish-yesiamatable!" solves almost any problem here.
If you earn enough money - Msk is a nice city with friendly population and good entertainment. Enough is much less if you try to naturalise and don't eat in restaurants every day.

To be fair, people everywhere only know what they read, hear from others or know from first-hand experience. I understand that.
Stores in Japan cannot accept any foreign currency, including $US, because of money laundering laws. I've read of places in Hokkaido that accept rubles and give change in rubles, since so many Russian fishermen and buyers of used cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles make port there. I can't confirm or deny that.
At this moment at Narita (http://www.narita-airport.or.jp/exchange_e/index.html), it's about 113 yen per dollar if buying yen, 119 yen if buying dollars. The currency traders always make a profit. :)

WHAT?!
If you are African - you'll probably hear something like "Oh boy, you probably feel sooo cold! Get this glass of vodka to warm up a little!"
All this stories about Evil Russian Nationalistic Skinheads are nonsense. Moscow is 10 million people officially, 20mil in fact, now 30 to 50% are non-Slavonic.
-
Moscow, the new Moscow, that is, not the one where I was born, speaks to the part of my brain that demand certain experiences.
It's more exotic and dangerous than New York
Trendier and more lavish than Los Angeles
Gaudier and more depraved than Las Vegas
Of course, different parts are different, and things change (I haven't been there since sumemr 2005), but 'Nice and Friendly' I can get plenty of in Central PA

I'd move to Iran, because I like to be crapped on!

I've seen those Moscow apartments. I'll stick with Belize, intellectually speaking.

I didn't notice anyone else pick this place, I have no illusions about it. It has it's bad points and bad areas but it has plenty going for it. The best thing about it is that you can always find somewhere in it where you'll fit in.
Of course the reason it wasn't picked yet is that most of you are already there. Yes the USA, probably the West coast north of LA.
Failing that the South of France, for all the obvious reasons. Then Spain.
As you can see, a mediterranean style climate appeals to me.
'I was born to live in a hot country'.
Of course Ireland's not a bad place to live either. Not since we got our act together.:aok

maybe norway.

Apart from that...Ireland maybe, or Scotland....Aye.

Angus, having been to Iceland. The first thing I noticed when I came back was how incredibly green everything seemed in comparsion. When you first left Iceland what did you think seeing all the greeness?
-
Can't think of a place with a stable enough government that is free as here.
Australia was one I was considering but it has some huge problems for me..
Advantages? it is large.. you could own a lot of land away from the crowd and they have a pretty good selection of cars and car culture.. lots of hot rods and room for em..
disadvantages? they speak jibberish.... they drive on the wrong side of the road with the steering wheels on the wrong side of the car...
Gas is expensive...
socialism... they are still overpowered by it... I always thought they were rugged individuals on the frontier but... I have changed my mind... they seem to be just slightly less effeminate brits with their women telling them they can't have guns anymore.
I think they are maybe more like canadians now... like America lite... or America if the UN ran it than they are brits tho I guess.

After that.....The Netherlands.
Those decisions are base purely on people I'd want to hang out with.

When I go abroad, I notice the vegetation, the temperature, and the air.
When I go back, I notice how barren it is (around the airfield, I live in a bery green area), and what really hits me is the air, - so fresh that it is almost uncomfortable.
Always happy to home where I live, but I'd rather go abroad than go to the capital for instance. And the missus has the same opinion.

I would probably relocate to the People's Republic of California. I've heard that politically-speaking that its literally been annexed from the U.S. I could get used to the 60% hispanic culture, probably help me brush up on my ghetto spanish. I'd have to get used to wildfires, earthquakes, outrageous taxes, unaffordable house payments and riots, but the weather seems like it would be nice.

Hmmmm....
Been to Panama... Didn't like it. Travel in Groups if you visit.
Been to Germany... Beer, Wine and Meats are good. Women don't shave arm pits or legs and wash there hair once a Month.
Been to Korea... Great if you are away from the Major cities. Asian Women are the best!
Been to Japan... Might be worth another trip. See above.
Been to Texas... Don't drink the water.
Been to Hawaii... Loved it. Too young to get wood.
Been to Alaska... Cold, If I had wood it would have froze off.
Would like to visit Australia... Perth. Got friends there begging me to visit.

If anything, I'd say that we're more relaxed and that's about it.
We drive on the other side of the road.
Don't worry about the skin cancer thing... Just learn to wear sunscreen. People only get skin cancer here because they're too frigging stupid to put on sunscreen and even go out intentionally and get burnt in order to get that tan that every banana in this country is so obssessed with.
If you're not into the 'beach bronze' look, you won't have a problem.
To be honest, this country is nothing great. I'd go to Germany.

68hawk.. northern kalifornia is different than southern kalifornia. Have you ever been to kalifornia?
There are a lot of places with 500-3000 people or so and the weather really can't be beat... that is why real estate goes up here all the time.
I am about a year from retirement then I can go where I please but... I have lived in other states... they are all about the same so far as silly laws. As kalifornia goes.. so goes the rest in a few years it seems... Not much freedom left in the US anymore.. but still better than anywhere else.
The trick is to get away from people... rural kalifornia is about like rural anywhere else in the states with better weather... In kalifornia you can live in the country and for about 20 years no one will bother you.. at that time your property will have trippled or more in value and you can move out in the sticks again...that is pretty much what I did where I am at.. now it is time to move.

we considered land in tennessee and north carolina and while it's nice it just doesn't feel like home to us.

You're right - I'd love to visit Israel. I've met a lot of Israelis through work and had a number of planned trips there aborted at the last minute for one reason or another.
Morocco was 'interesting'. Spent 3 days in Casablanca with some friends. Lots of fun, but the potential to get yourself into trouble was huge :)
-
I was in Israel before, the only thing I can say is look out for the Arabs. Someone in my travel group had his wallet stolen when he pulled it out to buy an item the Arabs were selling. His passport, money, plane tickets, everything was in that wallet. Needless to say he wasn't too happy when he was looking for it that evening.

Scotland - my home country (some of you might have detected a slight hint of an accent on VOX :D ) - is a fantastic place with a rich history, stunning scenery and (for the most part) friendly people.
The weather truly, truly sucks though. In winter it rains all (and I mean all) the time. It is also dark 18 hours of the day. Its rarely cold enough to snow these days so you you just get wet. A lot. In summer it rains all (and I mean all) the time. In fact the only real difference between summer and winter is that in summer you get 18 hours of daylight to watch the rain fall. Temperatures rarely go over 20C / 68F. Factor in wind chill and your damp clothes and it feels cooler.
On the plus side, the cr@p weather is a perfect excuse to spend more time in the pub. Scotland leads the world in drinking - something we are very proud of :D
My wife and I also find it hysterical that a slight drizzle in SoCal is referred to as a ''storm" and makes headline news. I nearly fell out my seat the first time I heard my fellow workers debating going home early because it had started to rain. :rofl

Live most of your life in Texas or Arizona I'm tired of the frakin heat.. To me Scotland is heaven.:)
-
I'd pick Japan as half my family's heritage is from there (my mom's side).
Also Hyaku-yen sushi! :aok

Scotland, Ireland, or possibly Harlan County, Kentucky. Just about the same climate, same geography, same dialog. And of course, many of the same jobs as around here.

England. I've trumpet playing buds living there. Also, great brass bands :)

When gramps got real drunk he would start to speak scottish jibberish.
That was a good time to ask him about the "old country"...
What mostly came out was... "Twas a cold miserable rock laddie"
When I visited there I had to agree. Plus... the people seemed beaten down.. not hardy individuals like I had read about... socialists.
as for colorado.... they have snow.
I hate snow. I hate ski studmuffins and boutiques. I don't even like to see snow in a movie... don't enjoy movies with snow in em.

Have you been to colorado? If not I guess we are even cause I never seen the movie (brokeback) that you are refering to. Were they skiers?

I am almost certain that it was... the picture you used was the same one that was in a thread about the movie here.
Where did you get it?
and.. is photoshop art?
lazs

i dont see why not.
which kind of art would depend upon classification.
in this case i would file it in the depictions of "outwardly macho/latent homo-erotic gunslingers" category.

cool.... since you are so good at labels you can get a job with the nea.
But.. was I right? is that the pic that was here from the brokeback thread and.. where did you get it?
In fact.. how did you come up with the idea? Kind of obvious where your mind is huh?

who knows.
being called good at labels by you must be some sort of compiment tho so i'll thank ye and continue onwards, confident in mine own self regardless.

A big patch of land somewhere in New Mexico, where I'd build a nice big estate, one piece per decade.
The spaceport will be nearby by for whenever it's time to get off this rock and relocate to greener pastures.

I like the area around cottonwood az and some of new mexico... also the greener areas of Texas.

storch, is that up in spring country?
When we drove to Fort Myers for vacation, we took a side trip through the area northwest of Orlando OTW back to Texas. I never knew before that Florida had spring country. We stopped at Blue Spring, which impressed me enough that I looked around a while. That's a seriously nice area up there.

What's your problem with skiing? I ski. As do most of my friends. Over the years I've been accused of being a studmuffin before, but never because I ski.

I don't think lazs means you're studmuffin because you ski, just that many who ski are studmuffingy-acting. Think about it, don't you see more gheyness in ski resorts than on the typical street?
I know he's right about snow, snow sucks.

You mean just because I wear a day-glo ski-jacket and get my German uber-saloon stuck in anything more than an inch of snow, I'm a bit limp-wristed?
I'm offended Sir.

no the spring country is like lake county alachua county and such, northwest of orlando. it sure is pretty country too. if you can take an inner tube ride down the ichetucknee river all the way down to the santa fe river you'll be convinced that my beautiful and beloved florida is the only place to live.
okeechobee county is still south florida and it's on the east side of lake okeechobee and is bordered by the big lake on the south, osceola and indian river counties to the north, st lucie and martin counties to the east and glades and higlands counties to the west.
land values are still considerably lower than dade county where I live. unless I sell my business I need to stay about two hours away from the shop max.
there are so many meskins in the area you'll never want for some good cooking but mesquite is a bit scarce.
:D

Skiing is as skiing does. There are wieners, bananas and idiots, as with any place in this world. There are also some really cool and genuine people who pull some really hard core stuff.
There's a world of difference between the losers who fly in from out of state to spend money at Vail like it's going out of style and the true snowriders at A-Basin.
Snowboarding is better for you anyway! A purer form of snowriding. It actually has a lot to do with dogfighting and E management.
This is from the one who was born in the middle of a blizzard. If you don't like snow then stay where its warm with the other panzies.

No sweat, mesquite grows like a weed, and meskins are good at planting it :)

I say again, Belize! I just talked with a guy that owns a place down there near Punta Gorda. He bought 10 acres for $100 an acre and has a legal title backed by a title policy in the US. He has a few squaters on his place, but he gives them a $20 or so when he is down there and they are his watchdogs when he is away. He says crime is limited to petty crime because enforcement is swift and harsh. I'm going down there in Febuary for and exploritiry look at Palencia and Punta Gorda. He says it's a lot like far south Louisiana.

I put most skiiers in the same category as the guys with the "alien" helmets and skin tight spandex that ride their bikes around like they are racers.
It just looks studmuffingy. It looks pretentious.

Ah - I think I see where Lazs is coming from. He thinks everyone skis in skin-tight downhill racing suits. Like he saw on the telly once.
Quick question Lazs; when you go out driving in your hotrod on a Sunday afternoon, do you wear a nomex racing suit, balaclava and full face helmet?

WHATEVER lazs wears while he does anything is the "correct" and manly attire.
Pay attention.

you should extend an invitation to him give him a tandem tow scooter tour of hamilton and buy him a pair of bermuda shorts and photo op it.

68... no I did not why would I? Same for the skiers and bike riders.. they are just flabby aholes not world competitors in a race.
curval is of course correct in that you can't go too wrong just following my lead on clothing.. I can't guarantee that you will look as good as me tho.

Lazs is just pissed because he can't ride snow.
Anyone who really does carve it up can easily affirm that it takes good conditioning to do it right. High altitude will also take it out of you. Halfpipe riding takes a lot of leg muscles to get that high in the air. Backcountry riding, possibly the purest form, takes a lot of cardiovascular conditioning, as well as the same muscles used in hiking.
He can fume as long as he wants, so long as he says away from my powder!

Tahiti, my family has some roots there.
-
Snow is good as long as it is there in just the right amount. A good amount in the winter, to melt and refill the ponds, lakes, rivers and streams in the spring, and for the kids to play in. And, of course, to make snowcream. Couldn't live without that.
-
I would say North Eastern New Mexico. The Pecos River area was great. May end up there in a few years.

What's up - did you use Michael Barrymore's pool while you were over here?

I couldn't imagine anyone having a pool over there... least not an outdoor one. I was constantly told how lucky I was the the weather was so good for my visit and everyone was going around without a jacket... I was freezing.
frodo... I will have to check out new mexico more.

Lazs I took my first trip to NM 2 years ago, and was blown away. Plan to go back next year for a longer trip. We have been seriously talking about moving there.
I grew up hunting, fishing, floating, camping, ect., all over the Ozarks, and neighboring states. Never thought I would want to be any other place than this area. I may have been wrong. So be careful if you go to New Mexico! :D
Started in Albuquerque. Nice for a large city, and the old downtown area was great. Santa Fe after that. Very beautiful and interesting, and I wanted to spend more time there. But the land and real estate prices were nuts.
The last area was the Pecos River area. Wide open spaces, outdoor lovers paradise. This will be my first destination on the next trip.
The climate was also very nice, and some of the best food I have tasted.

New Mexico is alright as long as you are in the mountain areas and next to water. Head to the Southern part of it like Demming and Lordsburg and it's a dirty dusty windy bucket of dirt. Even the area just South of Albuquerque is pretty nasty and desolate.
I'd rather be in AZ. or TX. than New Mexico. You can get the same kind of food and far more varied terrain. Texas also has much better hunting. (egads how I hate talking up texass.....) :p
-
On second thought, - France.
Many nice little places in not-so small a country.
-
France?! :lol Oh brother... thanks for the ab workout.
Northern NM is beautiful. Santa Fe and surroundings at Christmas was one of the most beautiful sights I've come across. White Sands looks great on postcards, but I never had a chance to see more of it.
