I just can't get over how much Vladik Putin loves to make people nervous. My only question is whether they'll be Bears or Blackjacks. Personally, I'm holding out for the jets. They'll look way neater getting escorted back into international airspace.
-
I think its great....I miss the good old days.
-
sounds great why doesnt he come out and say "nuke the world!"
-
Unfortunately there are no F-14's to escort them back into international airspace, and personaly I like the bears.
-
Soviet military crawling our from under the Ruble?
-
he's 5'1" he needs to be intimidating he's shorter than bonapart was and his army is nowhere near as competent as the french were.
-
It's almost 9 am in Moscow... I wonder where Beard is.
-
I wonder if it's time to dust off some of the SR71's and start them patroling the Rusian areas. I'm sure putin would look upon it with "understanding".
We might also want to look at bringing back the Phoenix missile system and a platform to launch it.

give him two more hours to compose himself. I tossed out some good chum a little while ago he's probably starting to smell it's greasy pungent odor now.

GreenPeace officials already said that "Noise from Russian military planes will endanger unique Arctic fauna". Morons. Where have they been when we had an airfield at North Pole with several flights every day.
The key to all this resurrection is a personality of a new defense minister. He's a former taxman, so now money goes on combat training instead of being stolen. They already have several generals and admirals under investigation...
Looks like a successful mock attack on Guam they decided that it's fun and we can do it on regular schedule.
-
Neubob, did you see "Sluchay v kvadrate 36-80" ("Incident at Map-Grid 36-80")? Great footage, Tu-16 emergency landing is awesome :)
If you didn't see it - I'll put it on the Web for you. It's one of the best Soviet propaganda movies, all-time classics, made in 1982, but not as popular as films about airborne troops with Boris Galkin.

Nope. Never saw it. I'd like to though....
On a related note, what do you think of the idea of SR-71 flights into Russian Airspace? Think they'd survive?

Lol, Russias leader is only 5'2? Whats he weigh, 100 lbs?

I'll try to get it from an old HDD tonight at home.
SR-71 that will get into an S-200, 300 or 400 fireing range is a toast. They probably flew parallel to the border, "crossing" it over some islands or small capes. Or flew over some tundra in the North where they can count polar deers. A good SAM ambush could solve the problem, but looks like no one cared. Remember a joke about an uncatchable Joe? :)
We got a first S-400 on combat duty near Moscow 2 weeks ago. Isn't it nice? :)
-
I wouldn't mind seeing a Soviet bomber as long as their isn't a bright flash afterwards......:D :noid
-
They've gotta flex what they have.
The had numerous nuclear subs rusting out at port, others countries had to step in to deal with the dangerous nuclear issues they had.
Or you could threaten neighbors by invading their airspace and attempt to fire anti-radar missiles inside. (http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?ContentBlockID=c93e3df9-5371-4728-b241-f9f9483317a4&Dynamic=1&Range=NOW&FromDate=08%2F15%2F2007&ToDate=08%2F17%2F2007&Category=%2Findex.cfm)
If all they have are long range bombers of the 50's to show off, enjoy the nostalgia.

News said few weeks ago that during tests S400 intercepted targets at 56KM high with speed of 2.8KM/sec. Although it didn't say which version of 400.

Is it about Georgia where Evil Russians (tm) dropped an anti-radar missile? Pure nonsense. Georgia doesn't have any radars. They already don't have railways, power stations, industry, medical care etc - it all disappeared when Evil Occupants went away. But now they have Democracy and government that literally gets it's salary from US DoS, while the rest of the population either starves or illegally works in Russia. Hail Democracy!

All I know is that it's a long-range version of S-300, solid-fuel, active-guidance, ABM-capable just as 300. It's a replacement for S-200, being cheaper in service, mobile and much more flexible. Not having to fuel spare missiles (up to 60 IIRC for S-200) or even assemble them from factory storage containers makes it much more effective.
Optimists make Airplanes, pessimists make Parachutes, cynics make SAMs. ;)

Are this ones usefull as long-range recon?
We also have Tu-160, as Neubob said, that is like a much bigger version of a B1-B, with stealth capabilities, carrying hi-tech weapons only.

I said - our guys are just having fun. Don't worry, usually we don't lose hydrogen bombs.
Someone just isn't happy about Russia participating in "global commerce", saying that demand/offer isn't good for the gas and oil we sell. So we are going to say "Preved!" to them. Bear surprise, you know :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preved
I wonder if that "Bears" already have nose art like this: (http://www.sostav.ru/articles/rus/2006/01.03/news/images/picture.jpg)

So, I guess that means, the cynics should get off they're bellybutton and make aircraft on par with the optimists. Then they wouldn't need SAM's. :rofl

Looks like we will have some live fire targets for our SAM sites soon

It's even more comical when geniuses underestimate threats posed by their (nuclear-capable) rivals. Surefire way to stay on top.

wait a minute.. wouldnt putting a rocket on meatwad and launching him at the plane. So he can fart and blow up the plane work as good as a sam? :D

With your impressive record of SAM victories - you need it badly :D
Unfortunately, our strategic planes are planned to fly in international airspace... Oh, sorry, US already shot a civilian airliner in international airspace! Was it the only US SAM kill?
-
I'll put our record of shooting down civilian airliners up against yours anytime.
At least when we did it, it was an accident and we apologized.
The USSR did it deliberately and knowingly and never apologized.
That says it all.

:) At least the U.S. doesn't crash as many planes....

You don't get to take many shots when you've had air superiority for decades.

Sure, it's better to duck and cover when you have people who have a long record of losing H-bombs (some of them still not found, "sum of all fears" LOL) flying over your heads.
It's getting boring.
I wonder what tomorrow's Western press will say. "Imperial ambitions", "Cold war is back" or anything new and fresh? I bet they'll mention "energy warfare" and other gas/oil stuff because they are surprised whty don't we give 'em all for free...
-
we jumped from planes to H-Bombs, well why not talk about the F-bomb ;)

the russian bear is old and feeble and has no teeth.

It applies now to poor old Europe and other "golden billion" nations. Better spend our oil on military training then sell it for coca-cola and chewing gum.

Funny,
I actually don't mind. Its not like China is doing the bomber flights - hell its great practice. And look at the bright side, it'll give us something to do. Their crews get practice they haven't had since the collapse - that will spur innovation on both sides of the fence. Hell maybe it'll spawn new safety innovations for both sides, especially with long range radio navigation being the main obstacle when over water or going over the pole.
That aside, we'll get to make those nifty cartoon plates u stick up to windows again. Though, I don't think Playboy will be quite to lure it was 20 years ago since most of the superhoes are usually farmed out after a brief stay at Hefner's pad.
Kidding aside, it'll keep both sides up to practice. And lets face it, the TU series has as much capability in blowing up islamic targets as any other bomber around. When viewed using that lens, the goals seem to be a bit more congruent.

Last thing I'm worried about is Russian bombers....not when we have these guys flying around.

If Russia and China want to play "Cold War" I say let them. The US has moved into the 21st Century.

Wow four engined propped bombers. Wonder if we will have to put the B-36 back in service to keep up?

Yeah I was just joking about the Bear.
Anyway, if Russia wants to fly bombers where ever in international airspace more power to them.
I think Wolfala has a point though.

It`s funny how Russia tries to follow trends and fads started in the U.S. and elsewhere.
They now have their own squeeker. :)

B-1b is lighter than the Tu-160, has much more advanced avionics, and is 6 times more numerous.

American planes don't make enough noise to make GreenPeace worry about poor scared seals. :D
BTW first time USSR landed heavy bombers at the North Pole in 1937, to set up a first drifting station SP-1.
In early 90s Russians set up an airfield at the North Pole for "extreme skydiving". In late-90s we even had nuclear icebreakers carrying rich tourists to the N Pole, so now I am glad we switch to the things that are more fun :)

Ask the indiginous people of Labrador about noise.

I was sarcastic again. Everyone knows (tm) that Concordes or Tupolevs are much noisier then American planes :D
BTW I have heard a 707 taking off, it roars compared to Soviet planes. Tu-95 makes only a little humming at the altitude where I can still identify it. Have seen enough of them when hiking in Lovozero tundras in 1991.
-
707's haven't been in use in the U.S. in like 30 years except for the KC-135's. They are mostly regulated to 3rd world countries, oh and Russia... :D

Sorry, the one I saw (and heard) in Sydney was from Australian Air Force.
I think it was a cargo version, that surprised me - i thought the airframe is only used in 135s (RC and KC) and E-3s now. Unfortunately I saw it at night and was unable to take any pictures.

The 135's are just about entirely reengined with turbofans now. Pretty quiet.

RAAF 707's are tankers, and used occasionally for transport. They used to be VIP aircraft but were replaced by 737-BBJ's, and shortly the 707's will replaced by A330 (KC-30B) MRTT's
