Title: It had to happen (!!)
Post by: flakbait on August 18, 2007, 08:34:05 PM
Welp, looks like the old M$ Sidewinder finally coughed up the magic smoke. The left hat function has gone out completely, and the front-left and back-left views only work %30 of the time. I hate to get rid of it as the stick options out there currently stink. Logitech works for a week, Saitek goes for three weeks (unless you go for the ol' CompUSA replacement trick), and a CH stick, despite the royal price tag, lacks rudder. I'm thinking about bagging a CH Pro Throttle to both add functions and bypass the buggy hat switch. But $118 + shipping is a tad much.

Any suggestions on a good stick, or should I simply bag the throttle?

Ebay

My last 2 Sidewinder Prec 2 USB sticks cost me 28$ & 30$ with shipping.

This gives me a good pair of sticks for use, one more stick that does work but has a base button not functioning. And a couple more with pinched wires, or other problems that I can strip for parts.

Just be very careful when looking at the sidewinders on ebay.
You'll see a lot of the original 3dpro's, and tons of the Prec pro's with the midi plug.

If I was to buy a different stick it would probably be the Saitek Aviator.

Trust me, I'm not thrilled with mine.  But then again there aren't many $30-40 options and I'm not willing to spend $100+.

I use the saitek av8r-01 stick and have never had problems with it other than not having 10 million buttons to fiddle with. very simple, reliable, and comfortable stick; and having 2 throttles oon it dont hurt either when in the 2 engined birds!

I suppose, but I rarely stray from my 109s and 190s.  I don't like the throttle in the front, however.
