Title: Interceptors
Post by: Tiger on August 20, 2007, 03:42:13 PM
Just to spark some (hopefully intelligent) discussion and get some opinions:

-Assume none of these take place near a 163 bases-

Scenario #1:
Your in the hanger and get word of bombers (mix bag 17's and 24's) inbound to your base, approx alt 15-20k  approx range 20 miles.  What do you up?

Scenario #2:
Your in the hanger and you see the bombers pop up on your radar ring (12.5 miles out) and you get word they are at 8-12k alt.  What do you up?

Scenario #3:
Your on the CV and get word of inbound bombers, less than 10 miles out low alt 5k-ish.  Which plane are you launching?

1) 109K4, Tempest or 262

2) 109K4

109K4s the only thing that can climb fast enough. Spit14 probably also, but doesn't have the 30mm for better killing, doesn't have 10 mins WEP. 109G14 with gondies also works (climbs worse)

Scenario #2:

Nothing. it's already too late. They'll be over your base and bombing it in 2.5 minutes (or less). If you start climbing you'll maybe make 8k by the time they shut your field, but you'll be going slower (best climb) while they're going much faster (level top speed) so even if you get UP to them you still have to take more time to chase them. The way bombers work in this game is messed up big time, IMO.

Scenario #3:
Your on the CV and get word of inbound bombers, less than 10 miles out low alt 5k-ish.  Which plane are you launching?

5K  is low enough that anything with cannon will do. Heck even the 6x50cal will do, but when in doubt, C-hog to the rescue!

At 185 mph you've got 6-7 minutes to get alt, intercept and begin firing which means you have to climb at between 2150 and 3350 feet per minute (best case to worst case).  Most fighters can climb at the lower number, however, many cannot climb at the higher of these numbers.

To be safe I'd take something that climbs well with cannons; 109G-12/K-4, Spit XIV/XVI or Yak-9U/9T would do it.

Here you are down to about 4 minutes.  Less if they are B-26's or something faster but assuming it's heavier buffs you're still in the 2-3000 feet per minute climb rate range so the same plane choices apply.

Now you're down to ~3.5 minutes but climb rate has been reduced to under 1500 feet per minute so the big cannons come out; BF110G-2, FW190A-8 or Typh/Temp would be my choices.

[EDIT]  Whoops, missed that CV part in scenario #3.  I'd take an F4U-1C or an F6F-5 myself... possibly an A6M2/5 although they aren't very durable.

1. -- k-4, f4U-4,P47N
2.--k-4,f4u-4,me262
3.---f4u-4/C
but in all scenario i would climb on same direction with the buffs, not towards them, not enough  time to climb , intercept and grab 2-3 k over them and make safe high speed vertical passes
i think in the situations presented you can't intercept them b4 they drop the eggs

F4U-4 for all scenarios. Good climb, fast at altitude with good acceleration and excellent zoom to get out of reach of the guns after my initial diving pass or, assuming sufficient starting airspeed, (in the 350-400mph range) a zoom up from about 1000-1500yds below, but ONLY if I have enough starting airspeed, and I prefer doing this from the front quarter.

You're up the creek in all 3, for you have no hope of intercepting before the bombs are dropped.

By the time you run to your a/c, strap in, get the engine started and warmed enough, you will be dodging bombs.
