Title: Whats In a Name
Post by: 5PointOh on August 21, 2007, 11:32:10 AM
I was looking through the roster the other day and I seen some interesting names, so I thought I'd see what some of the other players names originated from Example:

5PointOh=5.0L-->302 cubic inch engine built by Ford--->Used in my fun car (Mustang 5.0)

Shifty:

It was the callsign for my pilot Captain Anthony Donisi  333rd FS, 355th FW, whom I was crew chief for back in the late 1980s. We decided to give our plane A-10A  ser# 770284 the same name.

I started using the name a couple of years ago in the game.

The Swoose was the name of a B-26 that my Father flew during WWII. He flew 52 missions over Germany and came home unharmed. He said the swoose was a duck that flew backwards. It didn't care where it was going just where it had been. My avitar is a reduced picture of the plane. More pictures and info on his outfit here http://www.391stbombgroup.com
His crew is pictured in the crew pictures under Sherwood. Hope you enjoy the site.

Zazen is the active practice of Zen Buddhist Meditation. Literally translated from Japanese it means "To Sit" as in meditation for the purpose of attaining satori experiences and ultimately perfect elightenment. Generally attained by cleansing the mind of thought and experiencing "mind" unadulterated or the pure conscious awareness of reality....

Post by: Masherbrum on August 21, 2007, 12:35:00 PM
Masherbrum  - Where to begin on this one....Here goes... Masherbrum is a 25,000ft+ mountain in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan (K2 is in the same region).

My best friend and I were supposed to start our love of climbing the mountains in the winter of 98, but in Dec. 97 (one year before my wedding), tragedy struck.   He was 100yards from the driveway of Monrovia Nursery in Dayton, Oregon.   My friend Erich (best man) was put into a 23 day coma by a F%^&*r in a lifted truck that was trying to find his stupid girlfriend's school book and not watching the road. Erich was in an Escort and the car went between the wheelbase of the truck and the truck flipped and rolled over the escort.  His right ankle was destroyed from the kinetic energy from pushing on the brake pedal.   His left foot was behind his neck.  He was pronounced dead on the scene for 45 minutes because his pulse was that faint.  The 3rd paramedic refused to declare him dead, and found a faint pulse.   He was airlifted to Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

He is doing good in Tracy, California and has limited use of his right ankle (it is fused, by experimental surgery). I will climb for him and try and use my frustrations as fuel and motivation.   This mountain was picked by us as the last one we would attempt. A dart was thrown at maps of the Himalayas.

Karaya  - Short for "The Ace of Aces Call Sign".

Taken from the nose art of the P38G of "Corky" Smith, 80th FS "Headhunter" pilot.

Guppy35 is from the book 'Nannette" by Edwards Park about his P39 flying with the 35th FG.  Guppy was the nickname of his buddy who flew P38s and 35 is for the 35th FG.

Pretty sure I've told my story before but here goes.  I used to subcontract to Phillip Morris as the National Event Director for their amatuer country dance contest.

We're in a meeting one day and someone remarks that when we start hitting the clubs I can teach them to two step.  I looked at them and said 'nope don't know how'.  A good minute of silence here and the Press Agent said 'you are running the worlds largest amatuer dance contest and you can't dance for the worlds largest cigarette company?'
'Yep' I say
'Boy you are just a walkin talkin dichotomy arent you?'

Two great years working with that crew.  Lots of booze (free), travel (free), fantastic eats (free), 5 star hotels (free).  Just for running around the country and throwing parties.

When I was in High School, sometimes' we would have our test results posted on a bulletin board out in the hall. Well, my English teacher(of all people!) managed to mispell my name-Froderick instead of Frederick.

Anyway, one of my buddies' on the football team saw it, and started calling me Frode in practice. It stuck with everyone on the team, and, well...

...I kept it to this day.

Picked my name when my plan was to jump from squad to squad, country to country to meet new people.  When not in a squad, would change the squad name to something like:

III/Jabowaffels
~~Wings of Error~~
++ t3h Blue Knights ++
Birds of Prey (Vulcher Wing) or (Dodo Birds) :lol
etc...

The responses from some of the real squads was great :D

Ok, this is one of those sharing moments, right? Get in touch with our inner-selves, our feelings, et all? Forget it, I'll just tell you how my callsign was created...

Once, someone told me that I was like a sparrow, allways jumpy and erratic, flying around and without a purpose...It stuck.

In Warbirds, my first online experience, our callsigns could only have six caracters long, so, I took the scissors and chopped one "r" off the spar(r)ow...

Sparow since then.

Thunderegg:

"A thunderegg (or thunder egg) is a type of rock similar to a geode but formed in a rhyolitic lava flow and found only in areas of volcanic activity. Thundereggs are rough spheres, most about as big as a baseball and they contain centers of chalcedony in the form of agate, jasper, or opal.[1]

They look uninteresting on the outside, but slicing them in half may reveal highly attractive patterns and colors valuable in jewelry.

According to native legend, the Thunder Spirits lived at the highest reaches of Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson, and when they became angry at each other, they threw these spherical rocks at each other.

It is the state rock of the U.S. state of Oregon."

FlaydONE and I threw around some ideas prior to my subscribing in the summer of 2004.

Found a website that translates your real name into a pilot's call sign.

My name = MotorOil

Ok, works for me, easy to say and recognise.

Don't ask me for the website, this was several years ago.  I think I've been using it since 2001 or 2.  My last call sign no one could get it right.

Lt. C D Miller
VA-163, Saints
died in the Oriskany fire Oct. 1966.

My father in law I never knew.

As I understand it he was given his first assignment to a carrier after training and upon arriving was told about the huge bats that inhabited the hanger deck.   Off he went looking for them.  Not long afterwards he got tagged with "Seabat".

Title: Whats In a Name
Post by: hubsonfire on August 21, 2007, 02:43:40 PM
Oh, where to begin...

hub7
When I started AW, it wouldn't let me have hub, so I added the 7,    having an unhealthy fascination with the Mazda RX7, of which I have owned 3. Since then, I've been Hub7, hubs7, hubs, DoWhub, UShub, hub, or some variation. A truncation of my last name, I've been "hub" to pretty much everyone but my family since grade school. It's easy to remember your own name, even when drunk!

My assorted other GameIDs

Gunfodr
Gunfodder. After cancelling my first AH account, I came back with
no illusions as to my role in AH, and embraced my fate.

name
After cancelling my account, and coming back yet again, I'd temporarily exhausted my creativity, and wasn't aware I could get my old IDs back with a simple email.

mittens
"my cats name is mittens" Ralph Wiggums, paste eating Simpson's character, that makes me snork my beer out. Coming back late on a sunday, and initially planning to get hub unlocked the next day, after seeing the responses it got, I kept it for a while.

Bldninja
 Bloodninja. Google that one.

Furboll
 Just to piss Furball off.

I think that's all of them. :)

Leviathn

Named after Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan.  You can read about it here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leviathan_%28book%29).

The particular quote I had in mind when creating the name was this one: "I authorise and give up my right of governing myself to this man, or to this assembly of men, on this condition; that thou give up, thy right to him, and authorise all his actions in like manner."

Basically, everyone renders themselves equal to one another by becoming unequal to their ruler.  Deep, I know.  It's a political geek way of saying I'm gonna own you.

When I started playin AW in '97, I was 12 years old, and had no clue about anything dealing with ww2 outside of what they taught us in school up to that point, which isn't much. So when dad (0ldemon here 0lmon in AW) found AW, i didn't like it.. thought it was for "old people" lol.

I finally get on, and it asks me for a name, and so I chose buldg or something like that, it was the mascot of the high school I was going to attend, as well as the first professional football team, the Canton Bulldogs. The I started messing with squads and like now, back then a lot of squads used the same kind of CPID/handles. (AKz, FBz, WMz, JBz, etc etc) The name of the squad was Steel Falcons, so we used SF in our name. This is where sf3 got his name, as he was the 3rd person to join. lol It's bad I know, but like I said, I was a "squeaker" as they're called now :)

Shortly after that, the squad folded, and it was time to pick a new name again, and I didn't feel like messing with it, so I chose PK (my initials) and kept the 1.

I was drunk and starving to death so I made a pot of grits, which the SoCal kids had never seen before. I, being drunk and hungry, ate about 4-5 bowls and the sissy SoCal kids were repulsed so they made a pizza. After that they started calling me Grits and the nickname stuck. When I joined AW in '93 I chose Grits because it was a real nickname and I couldnt think of anything better so I have used it ever since.

Links in AW= I'm a golfer and links is a type/style of golf course.

Trog60= My favorite comic strip is BC and i thought trog was cool as a variant from those type of characters. Also i wanted something short, one syllable and simple for people to say in AH. The 60 is the year i was born 1960, as Trog was taken:(.

Interesting one of my squaddies kept calling me Trogdor the Burninator, so Krusty made my avatar and it just suck. My kids like it, my oldest can play the song on his guitar.

My Bro-in-law was SpamCan, he doesn't play anymore. I always wanted that call sign, but was to lazy to call HTC and ask for it.

TalonX

I wanted the name for the claw of the eagle, and "Talon" was taken, so I tacked on the X.   Although I have never seen just "Talon",there are many Talons with various small differences.

After reading this thread, I see I lacked any sense of creativity.

I am sorry I didn't take the name, Dejavu.

Yup, and some cheese. Too many first time grits eaters try to think of it like oatmeal (a shades name I have used in the past) and put sugar, but it really is better with salt, pepper, cheese and some kind of meat like ham or sausage.

Bro, I am getting hungry just talking about it.  Ham, slightly browned, grits, not to thick yet not to thin(spiced with salt, pepper, and cheese), with an over easy egg and a pat of butter melted over a piece of perfect toast with strawberry jam!  YUM YUM!:aok

Renegade here. Problem was back when I began flying there was no vox. Most guys call signs were 2,3 or 4 letters long. Everything was typed. Anyone who had a long call sign had it auto-shortened by the message sender for expediency. Mine stuck.

Lessee some other shortened call signs were Grey Eagle = GE, SharkBait = SB, PizzaFace was shortened to Pizza. There were lots like that.

My CPID is: Steve

It's a very deep and convoluted story as to how I came up with this name.

It involves a P51, a scorpion bite(it's the sting that hurts) and an f16.  I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you as it's top secret  CIA stuff.
Does anyone want to invest in my next air combat simulation?

BrOOv as yall  accents call me is from my nickname from school.  My surname is Mitchell and I was likened to a TV character.

I had to add 119 because Bruv was already taken (I believe that was down to me trialling AH1 for a week and thinking it sucked

My first ever squad from the BofB free room in FA around 99/00.  The 119th Flying/Fighting Devils.  Good memories of being a noob flying formation with 2 others in our Spitfires.  Killing zee evil Germans!

We found an unused runway in France and used to fly out and land on it.  When the Germans popped up on the map we would roll and get them before they got anywhere near the Channel.  We were so cool!

A fellow Co-founder of this squad (Barlow) gave me his account details and I played on his name to get his rank up.  He is responsible for getting me well and truly hooked....

Post by: Simaril on August 22, 2007, 10:42:17 AM
Simaril is supposed to be "silmaril", but 1. we have a 7 letter limit, and 2. like a dufus, I misspelled it when I signed on.

That's Silmaril, the singular of the Silmarillion...which is the title of JRR Tolkien's book of the old legends he created for the Middle Earth that contained The Lord of the Rings. The Simarillion were incredible treasures that captured the original light of creation in their 3 jewels...and were the tirggers for lifelong quests and world wars that even drew in the Valar (Spirit- like beings from the first creation, kinda like archangels; the wizards like Gandalf and Saruman were Maia, or lower angels.)

OK, so I'm a geek, what's your point?

These books are special family memories, too. I read the LOTR series several times, starting in junior high, and always loved them. When my kids were old enough to follow the story, but not old enough to read the books, I actually read the entire series out loud, complete with different voices and accents for each character. One of my most treasured memories of my son (now almost 16), was when he was 6 and I was sitting on his bed while reading the chapter that included the battle of the Pellenor Fields (outside Minas Tirith, when the riders of Rohan charged, and bent the enemy to the breaking point.) The swing of emotions -- the horns blowing, the riders crashing into the orcs' lines, looking like victory, then stalling; the black sailed ships arriving and bringing despair for the good guys..until the Banner of the King unfurled and Aragorn arrived -- all that was written on his face as events swung from pride and valor, to fear and hopelessness, to triumph. He was THERE, totally captivated.

It doesnt get better than that.

Anyway, Middle Earth has always been a very cool place for me, with the fun of a thoroughly believable, tremendously deep alternate universe -- and with the added attraction of being a place where honor meant something, where duty wasn't talked about but was done just because it needed to be done, and individual choices mattered even if no one knew about them. And the greatest hero wanted to retire an unknown, sitting quietly by his fire. (If you've only seen the movies, you don't know Frodo at all...he wasnt a wobbly kneed wiimp who rolled his eyes a lot.)

For a while, my son flew too -- and we had a deliberately small squad called "Wings of Manwe" (Manwe was the Vala (archangel) who was lord of the air.) Dan flew as "Mandos," who was the Vala lord of the Halls of the Dead. One time we were in a spot of virtual trouble, and were saved in the nick of time by Helm (a member of the Nazgul, of course). We thanked him for the clear, and he said "No problem guys...though I don't know why i helped out some of Manwe's boys. Just don't let Morgoth [Sauron's evil master] know."

:rofl Dan and I about lost it, falling on the floor laughing. I guess we're not the only Tolkien geeks online!

Back to the point. I picked Silmaril mostly because it was a pretty cool insider's tidbit from a book series I really, really liked.

I started playing this stuff back in 98.It was AW then.I was reading a book "JG26 Top Guns Of The Luftwaffe".I was hard pressed to figure a name.I didnt want to use a pilots real name. For some reason I felt it to be a little disrespectful.A nickname would do though.I was reading about Josef "Pips" Priller at the time. They said he was a good sort that could make peeps laugh in the worst of times.Including "The Fat One" Herman Goering.I personalized it a touch and Ive been Pipz since 1998.Funny thing is I have people in the real world calling me Pipz:lol

When I was in AW everyone seemed to have a bird of prey name (Hawk, Eagle, Falcon, etc.)  There were none left so I became crash ('cause that's all i did early on), then later ^Crsh to conform to our squad names.

When I moved here I wanted an all new fresh identity and it was still pretty early on and since I'm older and... well, it just fit (and I finally got a bird of prey name).

Obie is my nickname that everyone called me before Star Wars came out.  Most of it comes from my last name, Obuchowski.  Nobody could pronounce it so I was either called "ski" or Obie.  The 303 came from the 303 Polish squadron in the RAF.

I work in aviation . Wanted something to reflected that.

EPER = EPR (Engine Pressure Ratio , Its how you  measure power in certian jet engines) I added the extra E to make it easier to say.
EPER had a ring to it , versus the other aviation acronyms I came up with.

Post by: Tachus on August 23, 2007, 09:29:58 PM
When I started reading this thread there were only 3 pages, it got to seven before I finished, and I'm a pretty fast reader.

I started flying AW even before it went to AOL. Then you didn't get a callsign you were assigned a number. Mine was 1409. However, everyone had macros for the radio, so I stated using Pappy. (For Pappy Boyington) I used to love watching the Black Sheep. Anyway, when AW moved, I took the callsign Pappy and used it all the way through AW III. When I came on AH, (just recently) I never even tried Pappy, just assumed it was taken. (Still don't know if it is)

So I took the name Tachus, which is the English pronunciation of a Greek word that means Swift.

Best regards,
--Tachus

i know that silly...concidering thats all i been talkin bout really in this thread :)

ception ..... do u know that the 350 olds rocket has the exact firing order except for its backwards of the 350 chevy. i had 82 firebird with a 350 olds rocket in it and when we rebuilt the motor in my 85 s10 blazer that was a 350 chevy sb we had hella time gettin it to start and run right and realized that we were so used to the firing order with the rocket that we messed up and had the rocket firing order on the chevy and it didnt work out so well, after fixing the problem my blazer rocked!

oh and BB's....454 is best none fuel injected, put 750 holly or carter carb on it and call it good. but the new 8100 (8.1 liter) chevy BB is awsome! thats what my 2001 gmc sierra 1 ton dually had in it, got 8 miles to the gallon on the express way but had lots of hp and torque. had lots of fun drivin that truck :)

When joining up for AW2 beta, I wanted a better ID than my first initial+middle name I had been using.  In AW RR arenas we used kill macros to announce a kill credit.  I had a habit of being a bit of a kill hog leaving other players asking "Who got that kill?".   When I saw a back page newspaper article about a coroners ruling on a cause of a death, the idea for a macro struck me.  We were allowed 5 character IDs so the result was...
Murdr: was ruled the cause of death!!!
Had it so long now, I can't bring myself to change it to a kinder, gentler callsign.

Named for two things- my lucky number (Treize, or variations thereof, means "Thiteen" in most of the Latin-based languages) and for my favorite character from mya favorite anime series- Col. Treize Khushrenada from "Gundam Wing". So far only Malapy has caught the reference, even other anime-based names I've run across (even ones from GW, like "WingZero") haven't commented on it.

In AW3 I took the name of pyscho as my attitude at work and flight style flying under my friends account started him and a couple of others calling me psycho for how I flew and how I dealt with situations at work where the pucker factor would go from 0 to 11 on a scale of 10 in less then a second.

This last time coming back to AH I could not remember my other names at the time so I took part of my company name and used it.

See avatar.  The 5000th P-38 was called "YIPPEE", but that's not where I got the name from.  When I read "The Lockheed P-38" by Warren Bodie, I saw that the Lockheed employees began referring to the YP-38s as Yippee38s.  I needed a name for AOL back in the day and everything I tried without numbers didn't work.  I came up with this and I've used it ever since when online.

My LS-1 really likes Ford 302s.    IMO the best small block ever built is the LS-7.

Starting a new Squad in a month or two. (Anyone interested?)
One of the requirements is you have to donate to the Commemorative
Air Force. They are a Historical Society that restores, maintains, and
keeps these awesome Warbirds in the air for real.

Once a memeber you can join a local Wing and get your hands on these
birds yourself. I thought it would be a cool idea...

Umm a small block Chevy is the cheapest of the big 3 to build. Followed by Ford then MOPAR. This in no way reflects on the end product, just that more parts are made for the SB Chevy so parts are generally cheaper to purchase.
If you truly want an incredible little sb Chevy. Install a 283 crank in a 327 block. You will have one of best engines Chevy ever came up with.

I will not get into who makes a better engine because its pointless.

I have in my experience found that Chevy fans are the most bias and can't appreciate any other product. Even from their sister GM products.

Bronk
Edit: This is not to say all chevy fans are this bias. Just most of the ones I've met. Also most B.O.P. fans (No not the AH Squad.:p  Buick, Olds and Pontiac fans.) will quickly point out other products they have some admiration for. I think Ive only met a handful of chevy fans that would.

Ohh and make sure you have the matching journal size on that crank/block combo.

I picked 69bee because I have a 69 Superbee collecting dust in the shed. After Labor day when I run my last demolition derby I might actually start to work on it.

To make all of you chev vs. Mopar guys sick I will describe my current demo car. It is a 78 Chrysler New Yorker with a chev 350/turbo 350, shortend chev truck drive shaft and a chrysler 8.75 rearend. It looks like it was put there by the factory. The last car I ran was a 86 Grand Marquis with the same engine and tranny.

I will only run chevy and chrysler engines in derbies. The others wont take the heat.

first off, i am a ford nut.........raced em for quite a few years at the local dragstrip....mostly street cars, and no chevy with similar mods/equipment ever beat me(mine was 12.2's@117mph, streeet trim full weight, and passing nj state inspection....driven every day for work, to the airport to fly, and basicly where ever i went). our shop race car was a 68 camaro with a 454 bored to 461.....somewhere in the ballpark of 650hp, ran 9.90's

i do have to agree with the 426 hemi being the best BB ever built though. i believe it was dyno'd to just over 800 horsepower...in street trim. the 427 SOHC was in the 650-680 range if i remember correctly, with the chevy 427 somewhere in the 400-450 hp range.

Was SR71 in AW days. I chose it because I was fascinated by the SR71 when I was stationed at Beale AFB,Ca.

Joined Shillelagh Sq. Shortened to -SR-

When I came to AH. Shillalagh Sq. Used the shill suffix for easy ID.

First of all, very nice thread, 5pointOh, it's been fun reading it and discovering what's behind people's handle!

As for mine, unfortunately, it's nothing more than part of my first name and my surname. When I created the account, I tried some handles (can't remember exactly which ones), but they were all taken. I've never been much patient with this stuff, I hate having to shrink my brain to find something cool and not already in use... so I ended using Gianlupo, which I don't really like that much... I thought about changing it, but, by now, people do know me with that handle, so it'll be it for rest of my AH life.

And now, for something completely different....

There is at least 1 replica on the market, it's in a 3:4 scale, but very very nice:

In Europe, it can be flown as ultralight... maybe, Storchy, is time to fulfill your dream! ;)

That's Silmaril, the singular of the Silmarillion...

Sorry, this is wrong! Silmarillion means "of the Silmarils" and it's a part of the title of one of the stories told in Tolkien's book with the same name, the complete title being "Quenta Silmarillion". For a quick reference (I know you'll look at the book, later ;) ), you can check this page (http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/s/silmarillion.html). The plural of "Silmaril" is "Silmarils" in English and "Silmarilli" in Quenya (check the "Elements in Quenya and Sindarin names" appendix, at the end of the Silmarillion EDIT: under the sil- voice).

You're geek, but I'm geeker than you can possibly ever become! :D

This was priceless! :)

Well, I was at the mall the day before I signed up to play. Of course I was already thinking of what my handle was going to be. Well about that time this little old lady came up to me, in this weird looking cloak like outfit.
She walked straight up to me and said, "You seek a name, don't you"
Well at first I didn't know what to say.... so I just stood there for a second... Then she said again, "You seek a name don't you."
Well I was pretty freaked out, but I said "yes I do.. I do need a name."
So she said, "I knew you did, you shall call the boy Tim..."
I said, "What are you talking about."
She said, "You need a name for your baby... and you should call him Tim."
So I said, "Lady, I'm not having a baby, I just need a handle for Aces High..."
Then she looked at me and said, "Sorry, wrong guy...." and walked off.

So I picked Tachus

Best regards,
--Tachus

***Disclaimer, the above account is totally bogus, but is much more interesting than my earlier post concerning my handle. Thank You***

Moved from Ireland to California 6 years ago and discovered this bright object in the sky.  Didn't know what it was as there is usually a think blanket of cloud in Ireland.  While setting up my Xbox online account (Any old ghost recon players here) I used Solar in recognition of my new friend in the sky.

When bored of that I found AHII and decided to use Solar as my CPID.  Already taken I added 10 as this was my jersey number when I played Rugby back in the Emerald Isle.

when I first signed up in June 2001 I was MajWreck,...after my two weeks were up i decided I didnt like that name and spent a few days trying to come up with a name.  I wanted Trigger but someone already had that at the time and I didnt want any name with numbers to spoil it.
When  I was in the Air Force I worked in the dental clinic.  One of my jobs was to take care of the F-111 pilot's dental exam program at Mountain Home.  We used to refer to the pilots as airscrews and wingnuts.   Wingnuts was already taken so I got AirScrew.

Post by: BoilerDown on August 27, 2007, 03:59:05 PM
In real life my friends call me "Fiver", due to "5" being the jersey number I choose on my summer softball team.  Doesn't really work so well in air combat sims though because it could mean something different... like someone is at your five o'clock or the like.

So I had to think of something else.

I went to school at and am still a big fan of Purdue University, particularly the football team.  The school's nickname is the Boilermakers, one of the "things we say" at football games (I tailgate before em all btw) is to cheer "Boiler Up!"

Now BoilerUp is 8 letters, but the fact of the matter is I get shot down way too much to be called "up" anything.  So BoilerDown it is... 8 characters reduces to Boildown... call sign invented!

When starting my two week trial I quickly found any "cool" names I could think of were taken. So I started out as SEARS. I own and operate a small independant Sears appliance/catalogue store in my town. During my two week trial  was flying between bases and some guy on local channel says "hey guys theres a Sears out here", then a couple of days later I put a message out on country channel asking if anyone needed a gunner, some guy responded " ya, roebuck does." That was it, I decided I needed a name change. When I opened up an account after the two week trial I grabbed a dictionary and worked backwards from Z trying words I thought were interesting until one came up available. I have been VERTEX ever since. Liked the definition also.
