WE'RE WATCHING: A British company may put satellite tracking devices in school uniforms, so schools and parents can keep tabs on kids.
A school uniform maker in England is considering adding satellite tracking devices to its clothing range so parents will always know where their children are.

"Nanny state" in 3....2....

I thought nannies were supposed to take care of children and that children do not have adult rights as they are not yet mature enough to accept the responsibility inherent in those rights...
just sayin

Are they officially using 1984 as the style guide over there yet, or still just a mishmash of half-remembered ideas from when they read it in middle school?
-
How do you know that your clothes and cars dont already have GPS tracking devices in them already...

That's idiotic. Teach your dang kids to behave & they won't (usually) be places that you would expect them not to be.
-
Txmom,
You have a great point. Except doing that would require Parental Responsibility. When its a villiage raising your kids, the parents dont need to take responsibility!

Wonder how long lazs can hold his breath :)

Or, at the very least, they'll make darn sure they don't get caught :)

Sadly TxMom, they are kids and hard as you may try they still do stupid things that kids do.... even the good ones.

What an expensive, easily-defeatable idea. They could just bring a change of clothes in their backpacks and leave their uniforms in their lockers if they wanted to sneak out.
-
That's why they need to be surgically implanted. For the good of the kids.

In their brains. For the good of the kids.

Then no-one will be the products and that will be that. The market will decide.

vulcan.. I would be a lot more upset if it were here.
I also think you give me too much credit. I can think of half a dozen people on this BB who are/will be more upset than I.
When if comes to kids... their rights are not the same to me but... I believe that most times the parent should be the one to make decisions for kids and not the state.

I'm one of those would would be more upset than lazs, I think. When the government becomes the parents of my children, they could do whatever they feel necessary for them ~ until then, that's my job.

This idea has nothing to do with the British government. Its a private company marketing a product to individuals. The question we should really be asking is do any kids in the UK actually still wear school uniforms?

Agreed...I saw nothing in the article suggesting it would be mandatory or that government was involved in any way.
Knee jerk reaction from those who adamantly disapprove.

Not such a bad idea when you consider the number of perverts out there stealing kids.

Nearly all secondary schools require school uniform. It's not quite as common in primary schools, but becoming more so.

I'd fall under that knee jerk reaction column ~ didn't even read the article ~ only read the blurb in the original post.
Just give it a little time though, the government will soon applaud the idea & give it full support & encouragement.

I tried to push the "I love him too" button and nuthin happens :cry

The thing is it may not end there. On first glance you might look at this product and say "good idea, I can give my kids these gps trackers and then go online and see where they are" "If someone grabs them or they get lost hiking or camping, I can find them. "
The problem with what seems like a good idea is in a couple of years the military says "Hey we should put these trackers on all our soliders and vehicles so we dont loose them" and the sheep will say "this is good, saves our defense dollars." And then the Insurance companies say "Hey this will help us recover stolen vehicles and it will be good for our customers" And the sheep say "this is good, it will lower our insurance rates." Then one day before you know it some group for public safety and watchdogs for our well being will say "Hey we need these trackers for all the criminals after we release them from prison so we know where they are" and the sheep will agree "Yes this will help us feel safe at night when we sleep" And finally the day comes when a polictian or a lobby group in Washington says "everybody needs a GPS tracker in case there is an emergency so we know where everybody is, and it will save millions of dollars for the census takers cause we will know where everybody is and what they are doing and help prevent crime." and the sheep say "Bbbaaaa"

I am having trouble getting worked up about a private company offering a product that is not mandatory.
But... as eskimo points out.
I do love you all... even the really really dumb ones.

Really?
When I was at school in Glasgow 20 years ago, as much as the teachers tried to make us wear uniform, we pretty much ignored them. I just assumed the continuing collapse of discipline in schools in the intervening years would have meant they'd have given up trying by now.
