Holy crap..I am so pissed..
First..anyoen who makes theses "trojan Horse"..pop ups stuff shouydl be beaten severly then thrown in jail for a min of 4 years
For the last year+ I have been on cable..no problems..This last week..somthing happened
I was looking through travel sites...Adn My AVAST Alert came up and said ALARM TROJAN DETECTED!!!>.
well wen tthrought the.."immunzize delte stuff..Updated my SpyBot search and destroy..
I get these web pages that are poping up..when I dotn even have the web browser open!!
My AH got minimized when a Credit companies popped up...Or a "Look at these Celebrity Bloopers site " popped up...
I dotn visit porn sites
what can I do ?
-
Holy sh....t
Same thing is happening to me !
Middle of dogfight when sudenly AH gets minimized and a pop-up screen appeared ! :furious :furious :furious
They are called "worms" in your files....
Your puter has picked up a virus and now its creating all kind of alarms to make u go panic and worried that personal info will be available to ackers....
It will, it can slow down your puter and obviously causing grief....
What to do ?
Be carefull because the msg appearing during the pop ups will include a "cure". This is all a trick for you to purchase the software....
Surf google ! Use the name of the virus with the "search" tool and find free instructions to get ride of these "exe" files that will stop the pop-ups !
I'm lucky ! My neighbour(also an AH player) is up to date with these proceedures !
According to him, its not a serious matter but it should be fixed asap !

Try AVG, if Avast can't clean it for you. Try spybot AND adaware. Also, MS has the malicious file removal available via windows update. It might or might not help.

It is estimated 1 in 6 legitimate web sites are now comprimised and infected with spyware. Buy some decent protection, NOD32 is a good place to start.

reformat ,,,,get behind a routor , use firefox and a good AV program.
-
no..not...the dreaded Reformat!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use a router..anfd i use both firfox and explorer..I will nwo never use explorer...
will try AVG..and adaware first...arghhh

Try Spywareblaster, its free. I run it, Spybot S&D and Adaware 2007.
Also, are you running the IMMUNIZE functionality on S&D??? or just doing scans.
Highly recommend you Immunize, if you havent.
-
Go into MSIE's settings and DISABLE automatic file download, and running activeX plugins, and other things that you might be skeptical about.
-
Right. Skuzzy's sticky on internet security.
You know, is it not almost worth avoiding the frustration by buying a $500 CPU and make it the family computer?
You can run your AH machine lean, mean, and secure.

I recently removed Avast ( I was cheap) because it was terrible at protection and could not detect a java virus I got. Got NOD32 and it cleaned it and does a pretty good job. Doesn't take a lot of resources.
Internet Explorer 7 is actually pretty safe. Couple sites did a review on the comparisons of Firefox 2.0 and IE7 and IE was faster and a bit more secure. Of course this was 6 months ago and a lot can change in that time. I still use Firefox because I enjoy its plugins and SPELL CHECK which a lot of posters need on this forum.
I don't run software Firewalls, I do run a linux firewall box (IPCop), and NOD32.

Outside of Nod32
AVG's Anti Spyware is the best I've found.
And its free

I still use AVG's Anti Spyware And run it about once a week.
Covers alot of the tracking cookies NOD32 doesnt

NOD32.
I have IE7 though I still prefer Firefox.
Personally I still find firefox to be alot faster and less problematic then IE which I will often have to reload pages because while it will say "Done"t o loading a page Nothing will show untill I reload.
With IE I've still had my NOD32 go off (yea pron site) while with Firefox going ot the very same site it never let the trojan even get that far.
It just didnt let it through. Period.
Both with basically stock settings visiting the same sites
MY OWN head by head comparison.
Firefox is still by far the better and more secure browser

I have my system set up for dual boot. Ubuntu linux and XP. XP is only for AH. Ubuntu for everything else. No virus protection (firewalled router as well). I have found that most Virus protection programs bring windows to its knees eventually.
-
Look on the internet for "hitman pro". Its a free and serious all in one solution (set of programs), it gets rid of all spy-/mall- and other stuff-ware. I use it monthly just to be sure. In combination with Cc-cleaner and AVG-antivirus I keep 5 PC's in my family clean now this way. Didn't have any problem last three years.
Hope this helps you for a bit

Wow, Dred I've been using AVG AV for years and never knew about their anti-spyware app. (Doh!)
Got it now and added to my scan routine.
Thanks!

Crapcleaner is good for cleaning crap from the computer. Try it.

Anyone using the stock settings with IE is asking for trouble. It is quite trivial to make IE as secure as any other browser. None of them are 100% safe.
More importantly, even if you do not use IE, those settings still effect other applications in Windows. It is important to tighten them up or you are still asking for trouble.

holy moly...
So..Skuzzy..
I have read/ heard multiple things..I know computer more then the average..but not code writer
What in the Heeelll..should I do?
..besides reformatting ..which is my very ..very last option..
Everything is running decently..except thsi pop up stuff...
I just D/L AVG's free rootkit. and antivirus ...
It found about 4 Trojans..and 1 virus
I "think" i removed all of them....But just few minutes ago..I had a website pop up..offering great deals in Real Estate.....The top of the Page says.."By Internet Speed Monitor"
I cant play AH liek this..boo hoo; (
-
Sounds like somebody clicked on one of those
"Your internet connection could be faster!" windows.
All I can say is google that.
I found this comment about it, you may try this...
"I've had the same problem for a couple of weeks. Yesterday I started searching for a cure. I tried a couple of free anti-adware downloads, but nothing did any good. I was thinking that if I could find it, I could kill it. As simple as it sounds, I did a search on my hard drive for "Internet Speed Monitor" and there it was, living in my program directory (documents and settings\owner\startmenu\progr... It had its own folder and even included an uninstaller. I ran the latter, rebooted, and haven't had a pop-up since. Good luck!"
-
Run Hijackthis and post the result here, we can probably point out the culprit.
-
ok..thats is funny..I did the search..it found the "speed" thing..
I also followed Skuzzy's Settings on Explorer...For some reason I cant access MLS ( im a broker) in Firefox...it only loads up a 1/8 of the page. I will work on this later..
If its not cure by this I will do the Hi-Jack thing and post...
Is there no Big effort to stop thsi crap? I would think the 90% of computer users are screwed..Or is it ..Whe they buy a Comp..and pay for Norton or Macafee or what ever., it guards them well enough?
The last 3 computers I built...I just bought my first "Factory Laptop from gateway" and its running smooth...so far; )
-
oh ..and btw...Thank you ALL Very MUCH for the input!!
If you ever cruise through Northern California, Ill treat you to a drink !; ) atleast
-
HiJack this is what I use when I have one of those difficult to find and remove programs, just be carefull as you can really mess your system up.
BTW where at in Northern California? I'm in Redding.
-
You just have to be super paranoid and be careful on how you click things that pop up.
Many popups have a fake 'close this window' looking button that cause it to install on your computer. Many people just hit okay or cancel but that can also lead to the same thing. You really need to watch that kind of stuff to keep your windows machine clean.
Firefox may not work for some sites since most morons/web developers assume IE and all of the awful vulnerabilities that go along with it.
Did I mention windows sucks? Too bad there is really no choice for the average computer user. I use Solaris on Sun gear at work and Ubuntu on home built gear at home (except for AH on XP of course). If AH worked well on WINE (or was native for Linux) I would dump Windows entirely. Such a mess of an OS.
-
ahhhh..
Redding..well thats the "real"norcal.
..U could consider me in Socal..lol.....Im in Orangevale..Next to Folsom Lake
Yes I know what you mean with the "Fake Close windows."
I rarely..RARELy ever get pop ups...I could blame my girlfriend..But it seemed to happen after "I" was visiting Mexican Tourism websites ; (
Yes I love being a beta tester for windows... ha ..ha

Yeah for anything Adaware and Search and Destroy doesn't get rid of, I use "Hijackthis". Its a tool to help you manually remove adware/spyware, etc. I have to deal with this sort of thing in my IT support job every once in a while even though we're behind some pretty good firewalls and filtering.
-
As a rule i run all spyware , and virus scanners in safe mode . A hijakthis log is a must in this situation (also in safe mode ) . Stop the pRon surfing !!!

It's an ongoing battle. Organized crime is now focused on this so there is money behind it (the Storm Worm saga is quite scarey, binaries that change every 30 mins to avoid AV detection).
Generally speaking any good solution as going to cost you $$$. The freeware stuff is 'best effort', or if its good gets brought quickly and goes commercial. NOD32 is the best AV I've seen bar the corporate versions of McAfee (which you cannot buy retail).
If it is of enough concern to you I'd look at one of these: http://www.sonicwall.com/us/TZ_150_Series.html
Or if you can afford it the newer TZ180.
-
Schedule a "boot time" scan. That's where you get rid of the viruses. If you delete them while on system, they just reinstal

I stated that to make a point as,while I usually try to refrain from saying "most". I think its a pretty safe bet to say that "most" people run IE at its stock settings.
Which is why I just for my own personal curiousity tested it that way.
Fact of the matter is I've never contracted a virus through firefox. Even at its stock settings
But as a rule I also dont run it at its stock settings either.
And I also use the "noscript" addon for it. Which is nice because if there is a site I want to be able to run scripts at with a simple click I can have the options of Temporarily allowing a specific site, Always allowing a specific site which there are a couple of sites I do that I know are safe.
Or always forbiding a site.
And I still find Firefox to be faster then IE
by about a 3rd
