Title: English recognized as the official language of the United States of America
Post by: Traveler on August 24, 2007, 11:33:48 AM
The one and only reason English should become the official language of the USA.  The US Constitution and Bill of Rights is written in English.

No Angus, it is not.

Our government seems to think it is a great idea to throw away all that was learned in the 1800's and early 1900's regarding immigration.  Instead they would rather the US be a multi-culturalism hodge podge of different cultures and languages that do not respect the American culture, and instead give rewards to illegal immigrants for entering the country illegally.

although I believe making English the official language would be a good thing and makes sense  I cant help but also think we're being just a little hypocritical.   Freedom of Speech doesnt say ye shall speak in English.
I would rather see them ditch all the Fed requirements to have mutilingual forms and signs and such.   Let be optional for businesses to provide multilingual services if they want the business or not.   You want apply for a job better speak english...

Freedom of speech is just that; you are free to speak your mind in whatever language you desire, but it should not mean that we can not as a nation make english the official language.

My great great grandparents immigrated to this country about 150 years ago and one of the first things that they wanted to do was learn to speak english, not because they were compelled too, but because they wanted to be a part of this great nation, and speaking english was one of the ways that they could fit in.

There must be some catalyst to bring all people in this country together as one nation, and language can be a very powerful tie. Heck look at us and the Brits we're still on pretty good terms with them even after we had to kick 'em out.:)

I am from Philadelphia and I order my cheesesteak in English (http://michellemalkin.com/2006/05/31/genos-says-speak-english/)

Go to most any other developed nation and see if they cater to folks that do not speak the native tongue.  You will not see signs, etc in English except near travel areas (airports and the like).  This is not to say that they do not know English, most other nations do.  They are smart and teach their children more than one language.  But it is not the language of the land.

Now go get a cheesesteak! (http://www.genosteaks.com/home.html)

To be an American, you must know English and the culture of the United States.  Anything less is insufficient.

didn't one state make it the official language so they could stop printing government forms in two languages to save money?

Aw crap, does that mean we have to learn Latin now?  It's used all over the place in our legal system.

When has American culture repected any other culture in the world? C'mon. The official language of this country is green. If you speak and understand that, all else is irrelevant. i personally think english should be learned and spoken, and I also beleive our government forms should only be in english. But my daughter will speak spanish because at their rate of growth, they may soon the the majority in this country.

Regardless of your opinion about American actions outside our own country, what goes on in this country is a travesty with regards to our lawmakers efforts at appeasement to multi culturalism.  It is rediculous and one of the major reasons we are having the domestic problems we are experiencing.
