No, no, they'll put him on a horse and send him through the gate like Charlton Heston in El Cid.

Many of those, like yourself, who arrived in 1960, have become an important and valuable part of the American community, especially in Florida.  Culture, music, food, ideas, political force, have all been contrubutions to the funky little melting pot we call America.

I can understand the mindset of those, who if there became an opportunity to return to a "new", democratic, Cuba to return to not only help bring about greater changes and make that island into what it could have been all along.

Cuba, in a different political environment, could be THE vacation and investment center of the Carribbean of the next decade.

Could you even imagine the amount of REAL high/medium paying salary job opportunities...and what that would mean for the average Cuban?

It's all in the wings waiting to happen....

curious...why would cuba stand any better chance of being some great capitalist mecca as opposed to places like haiti or the dominican republic...which (as i understand it) are not ?

is it just a proximity thing?

Not really.

The Dominican Republic has only given it a half-arsed attempt.  The have had cruise line destinations at Porto Plata and elsewhere, but have never made a big effort to optomize their potential.   I have been to the Dominican Republic, and enjoyed my stay...but they still need to put more effort into resorts and making visitors feel safe.

Haiti's on and off strife and crime have had taken a toll on any possible investment and tourism.  Papa Doc and Baby Doc are gone, but there is little stability there.  I don't think (except for the few cruise lines that make DAY-ONLY stops at Port-Au-Prince) that a vacationer would feel safe there.  Between security and safety issues...the environment for investment and travel is extremely limited.

Cuba could show the hemisphere that they can be different...under a different government.

BTW:  I'm not saying "capatilist mecca"...If it worked out that way, fine.  I'd stay away from gambling, but gambling is what hugely improves a hotel/resort's bottom line.  Resorts like Sandals and other all-inclusive vacation spots all over the Carribbean would be a nice fit.

I'm talking about investment and tourism possibilities that would bring real jobs and career opportunities to people who are now cutting sugar cane and picking pineapples...but thanks to their government-- do not have that opportunity now.

i just wonder if the cuban people are going to want that kind of change as quickly as others might like.

doesnt sound like raul likes western ways much either.

will certainly be interesting.

Yep, just like it was in the '50s with all that mafia money.  I also wonder how those Cubans that stayed there would react to a bunch of exiles flooding in and trying to take control.

And from all reports, Raul is a little more hard lined than Castro is.

actually raul is the one who has cut deals with the spanish hoteliers melia and other chains who have developed some of the best resorts on the north shore at beaches like the world reknowned varadero beach.  those resorts are completely off limits to the cuban people except for the ones work the hotels or the sex trades.

raul is very pro tourist dollars.  the ministry of tourism is part of the ministry of defense in cuba.

perhaps some the euros who post on this board will shed some light on the topic with ancedotes from trips to cuba.

I don't think too many who are here in the U.S. are in any hurry to return.  while there will be great opportunity because cuban infrastructure is non existent and there will be booms in all manner of construction work I suspect the developement capital will come from china, japan and europe.

the only way it would be otherwise is if the US does a policy about face and pulls a monroe doctrine uh uh uh and keeps other competitors out but I doubt that will occur.

in any event there is great affinity for the US from the exiled community but not so much from the people who are on the island.

It's also amazing that our government still think he's such a major threat to the region.  Lift the embargo already, it only hurts the common man and not those in power.

Canada invested a lot of money in Cuba tourist business. I spent 2 weeks in Cuba in Varadero, rented a car for one week and traveled a lot around, talked with people, saw how they live.
Amazing. They don't talk or think about Socialism or Communism, they don't try to change the world. All people I talked to were more than welcome countries like Canada, Spain, Germany.... Only what they don't want to see is US dictate. Cubans are proud-hearted people, and most of them feel like "They want us dead - we will survive!" And this is feeling of people on the streets, not those who are in power.

I really do believe that if the USA would say something like "Ok, guys, you will be independent forever, do whatever you want and build whatever you want, just let us invest some money in your tourist business" - and after few years Cuba would be the same like 50 years ago.

Will never happen.. It's all about the show of power not the threat of Castro. Castro will have to be out of the picture totally b4 Cuba will ever open back up for the US.

ya the embargo is just stupid.  sadly the powerful and well funded ultra right wing cuban american national foundation will never allow that to occur.

there are many septuagenarins and octagenarians whos only purpose in life today is to outlive castro and maybe piss on his grave.  many of them have amassed huge personal fortunes by continuing the struggle from the comfort of their $40M star island mansions or 80th story offices overlooking biscayne bay.  I think they all took lessons from yassir arafat, their tactics are similar right down to reported terrorist activities on the island.

Rumours pass that Fidel Casto has died.

Today it was reported that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was found crying face down in the Capitol street.  When confronted his only reply was...

My Rubber Duckie!!! MY Rubber Duckie!!!

Film at 11...
