Title: House Hunting
Post by: midnight Target on August 25, 2007, 07:30:43 PM
Looks like I might be relocating to Idaho. I'm here now (Caldwell), and basically have been told that the job is mine to turn down. I'll be certain by Wednesday, thats when the corporate GM comes out to visit. This is a very nice place. People leave their cars unlocked, everyone is friendly... I may puke from the sweetness.

Also housing is pretty darn cheap.

Just remember that it takes a big gun to kill a house; but at least they are slow and hard to miss.

Yeah, but field dressing the SOB is a PITA. Its why I have pretty much quit hunting in my old age (the fun stops and the work starts the instant you pull the trigger ;))

Haha.  The desert dweller taunts Old Man Winter.

Old Man Winter would like to remind him that he's probably never had to wear a jacket before, much less deal with many feet of snow.

USAF wanted to send me to North Dakota (Minot AFB) after training.

I'd met folks who'd been there.

I balked :)

Holy Skin-head/Republican-faith-based community, Batman! The (Midnight)Joker is going to Idaho!

Wooooo weee! This should be an interesting culture shock for a Southern Cal boy like you! Sweet!  Next thing you know, you'll be asking questions about rifles, posting pics of the game you bag, and letting us know you joined the NRA! :D

Watch Napoleon Dynamite 4 or 5 times in a row and then think about living in Idaho.
Oh, the winter weather is a mortar forker. Think living on Donner Pass. I kid thee not.

Aww...don't let em razz ya too much Midnight.  I once camped out in the Rockies at a site just west of Jasper Wyoming.  It was cold, but nothing I couldn't handle, even considering I was raised in a sweltering hot cotton-patch Southern community.  Idaho is much the same.

Wore some long-handles to bed, with a toboggan and wool socks.  Stuck one light-weight sleeping bag inside a large, cold-weather bag.  Tossed a couple of blankets on top for good measure.  Slept like a log with only my nose exposed.  No problem.

Aaaah....June!

A. This is southern Idaho, I have been assured that the winters here are wonderful.
B. I don't believe them.
3. I already have a rifle.
D. Downtown Boise looks alot more like a new age coffee shop than a rodeo.
5. I lived in the mountains for 2 years. Snow schmo.

I have friends in idaho.

They consider boise a hotbed of liberal commie pinko activity..  the even say in muted tones that there are colored people in boise!

The winters are far from mild tho.

You've already covered the weather angle and the cost of living issues. The terrain is rather boring at times, lots of low scrub and grass.

You do know it's about as Mormon as Utah don't you.

You should have access to good skiing and other outdoor activities. Really not a bad place to be if just a bit boring at times and for the winter......

Did you have a career change or just changing RV areas / company?

Slight career change. I work for a company that makes RV components. We bought an existing manufacturing firm up here and I'm tasked with getting it profitable.

We haven't discussed money yet, hope to nail that down next week.

money?  you are relocating to idaho.  I suggest you select payment in the form of items one may barter with (http://www.dentalproslab.com/index.html).  this may work out better for you than tender :D

I lived in Pocatello, Idaho for a number of years, which is located down toward the southern end of the state about 5 hours east of Boise...  It's been 10 years since I've lived there but the southern area of Idaho is a descent place to live.  Housing was cheap, the overall cost of living was cheap.  Hell my electric bill average was 90 dollars a month, I would give anything to have that down here in Texas...
