Im gonna start trying out some Irish Whisky. Ive now tried most of Scottish brands and found some favorites but now its time to start on the Irish to see if there are any gems to be found.
I like my whisky with the glass filled until 2 cubes just about floats without touching the bottom of the glass.
So I challenge the community to find the first two i really should try on the rocks and post your favorite among them
the choises:
Jameson
Bushmills
Tullamore Dew
Clontarf
-
Just stick with Jack and drink it straight from the bottle.
-
Not what i asked for, and no.
-
Redbreast is good also.

I found Jameson's to be highly over rated, But I generally prefer Scotch Whisky. Sounds like a fun little experiment though. ;)
-
Thx... i see it is available at my local boozestore if you order it, but its not on the shelf.

Yeah i may not end up liking them, but i think i should give them a go before i dismiss them. From what i hear form other whisky fans the irish brands have been way underrated until recently.

That of course was a joke.
Here's the Irish Whiskey's you should try:
Jameson -- I believe it still holds the title as the #1 selling brand of Irish in the world
Aldo, you may want to try Cooley's
-
BUSHMILLS!!!!!!!!
(If my ancestors hadn't left Ireland 243 years ago, I would have loved a job at the factory.)
And Nilsen....take pride in that drink....Irish are just shipwrecked Norwegians!

If they don't have redbreast then bushmills.

Jameson's is really good, though a tad too pricey for me to drink it a lot. Plus, it mixes REALLY well with diet coke (specifically diet coke) for any of your lady friends.

Wait a second........didn't you have a thread before with a bunch of highly potent drinks for the "lady friends"? I'm starting to see a pattern...................... .:t

Not that I can remember. But I do forget a lot.
-
Bushmills is ok

I think all the makes that have been posted are good. my personal favorite is jameson 12 years old. I drink it without water or ice. in my opinion is the one of the best sipping whiskys ever.
american whiskys are ok for mixed drinks but never to sipped. they can't hold a candle to scotch whiskys and forget about even mentioning them when discussing something so fine as a good irish whisky.
-
Never tried Irish, I do enjoy my Scotch though. Maybe I'll give it a shot.. <--- get it?
Mixing whiskey with anything but ice or water should be a hanging offense.

I can tell you've never ventured into bourbon. Shame!

my wife is a bourbon drinker she favors maker's mark. if we ever happen to meet ask me to mix you any bourbon cocktail. I am probably the best whisky sour maker you will ever know. aside from cocktails bourbon is barely palatable and in my case triggers a gag reflex. bourbon is crap. american beer is piss. we should stay out of the alcohol making business, we suck at it.
-
I'm going to have to ask you to give up not only your man card, but your citizenship as well. There's plenty of mexicans who would gladly disagree with you for a crack at american life. :rofl
Anyway, you only need to look at what happens with Bourbon barrels after they are finished aging with them to truly judge which is better. I won't ruin the surprise for you.
-
Bushmills
-
what does any of that have to do with awful tasting bourbon?
-
Thunderbird and a packet of koolaid crystals.
-
Nilsen, I can't reccomend Knappogue Castle strongly enough. It's quite simply the best Irish whiskey I've ever tasted.

They get shipped to ireland to be used in the production of irish whisk(e)y ;)

Thank you all for your input but id like to remind you of the choises:
Jameson
Bushmills
Tullamore Dew
Clontarf
:)

Id say clontarf as well.
Just the plain old Clontarf or the Reserve.
Great taste.
However, tullamore do is good, and makes a good Irish Coffee.:aok

Bourbon is perfect to clean up the bugs you have on your wind shield.
-
After ive done my tour of the irish, i will try some bourbons.
-
Jameson
But I prefer Johhny Walker Black label.

I'm afraid it would ruin the rubber that seals the windshield, better to use it to kill the bugs outright :D

usquaebach is my favorite scotch whisky, both the single malt and the vatted variety. it's a bit pricey though.
-
I think ill take the Clontarf and Jameson for round one, Bushmills and Tullamore on day two :D
-
for scotch I always liked walker black label for a blended and macallan 12 year old for a single malt.
I always drank those two neat without ice.

I got into this a little bit when I was searching for the perfect Irish coffee.
My liquor cabinet now has a bottle of Bushmills, but to my taste the easiest and best tasting Irish coffee is simply a mug of decaf Melitta with a pony of Irish Mist.
-
Bushmills.
I appreciate Jack Daniels more lately though. In a similar condition of over ice cubes with a splash of water, I prefer JD. Bushmills is the best of the list.

Malta

Nils, you're going to try them all anyway... why ask for opinions?
Are you going to let someone else decide if it tastes good to you? :)
-
Opinions from other than the "professionals" that tests this stuff is always good. If one or more of them didnt get any thumbs up i could save the money. Afterall im going thru a large selection of whiskys so the more i can skip the better... There is a limit to how much i can consume when i only get to do so once or twice a month anyway :D
-
I still have that crate of Craggenmore for hitech.
too bad he hasn't yet fixed the autoretracting flap issue on the P-38
so i've been slowly drinking the pain away...
-
Nils, when you are ready for a GOOD bourbon let me know. I am a Maker's Mark Ambassador. I'll hook you up.:)
-
So Nilsen - what's the verdict?

UPDATE
I went the "safe" way and got me a bottle of jameson to get me started. Had about 8-9 of them on the rocks yesterday and i must say that im not quite sure what i think. :) It is very different from most scottttttish whisky for sure, both in smell and taste. What my pallet found was a taste of caramel, honey and an overall fruity taste. It was not bad at all, but a taste i think i need to get abit used to. And i will work on that :D
Sure, and thx rpm. Ill post the same question when i get to bourbons :)
-
Tullamore Dew. yummy.
-
There is only one way to spell whiskey, with an e. Whisky is just an imitation. :p All Scotch mist.
Of the four, I have to admit I never heard of Clontarf whiskey. So know nothing about it. Not sure why they call a whiskey after a dull suburb of Dublin city? Ok there was a battle there in 1014 against the Vikings, note that Nilsen :aok We won! That might influence your decision as to whether you like it or not.
Of the others. I tend to drink Jameson. Although I like Bushmills and only had Tullamore once or twice.
Very popular in Ireland is Powers Gold Label which I don't think is exported much. It's a bit like Jameson only a bit lighter. I still prefer Jameson.
It's true about the Bourbon barrels, they are used to for ageing Irish whiskey.
