Title: suspended on the 2nd day? unbelievable
Post by: texasmom on August 29, 2007, 09:36:51 AM
Okay, this is probably too much info, but I'll go for it anyhow.

One of my kids: suspended on the 2nd day of school. He'll be spending the day at work with me. I'm allowing him to bring one book from our shelves to read:  Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette.  Then, after he's bored to death all day with that, he'll be greeted at home by TxDad.

lol

What did he do?  Given the etiquette book he is going to have to read...my guess is he slagged off a teacher.

Thats nothing. I knew a kid when I went to school that would be suspended from school every other week, and detention on the weeks he wasn't suspended. He did this from 5th to 9th grade. Wonder if he's at it this year. :lol

That's a suspendable offense?  Atleast he was actually in the bathroom, he could have pee'd in the trash can in the classroom

In this instance the suspension was fairly earned; fighting. Was horsing around w/one kid; which led another kid to think they were actually fighting.  So 2nd kid jumped in = real fight.

There were probably a few things that could have been done to make sure the other kid realized there wasn't a fight going on for him to jump into.

I don't mind horsing around if it's a time/place that's not distruptive to the lessons... actually I don't even mind him tossing some knuckles around (3 sons... it happens more often in our household probably more than in others). Either way, he's got to realize that while I may think it's okay to fight if warranted, it's never acceptable in the eyes of the school.  And suspension or expulsion is NOT acceptable to me, so he's gotta follow the schools acceptable standard: hands off at all times.

well, atleast it was semi-justified.  He could have been suspended for drawing a laser gun or playing cops and robbers  (two cases that have occured recently)

what a wimpy looking board.  our junior high principle had a board that was twice as long, wide, thick and had holes drilled in it, (was told it was to decrease wind resistance while it was being delivered to the target area.)

It stung but it wouldnt permanently cripple you...

Instant expulsion at many KISD & HISD high schools. One of my younger training partners had to get a talking to from a counseler because he showed up with a fat lip.... that he got from MMA class seperate from the school.

School disciplinary action is weird, to say the least.

Get in a little fist fight at school, and instant suspension, but get a few school buses pulled over by the cops on a field trip, and you're good to go.

How old's the kid, anyway?

I think my youngest got suspended once a year from about the 6th through the 10th grade for fighting. When I was kid there was no suspension for fighting, just a paddling. Likely would have been a lot more fights if we got a 1-3 day vacation for fighting.

Times have changed and not for the better. School vouchers will happen.

I applaud you for disciplining your child and not trying to find a way to excuse his behavior.  My Dad was a high school assistant principal for 13 years.  The minority of parents would apologize and promise to punish the kid.  The majority seemed to feel raising their kids was the school system's job, not theirs.

Unless you want your kid tossing garbage cans into the back of a truck for a career, he better sit down and actually try to learn something.  A high school diploma is good for about $8.50 an hour these days.

Asst. principal called me on work cell today, with my kid in his office--(senior, 17 years old) the kid hasn't worked out her parking decal--(first, they wanted proof of insurance, sent her down with up-to-date insurance card from State Farm--get new one every 6 months) THEN they said ya gotta produce valid registration--(the 'year' stickers on tag mean ya paid em, the cardboard thingie that comes with it IS your registration)---Alas, kid LOST the afore-mentioned cardboard thingie, so I printed her out a copy of the title, and gave her directions to the DMV, where she can spend some afternoon:lol )...THAT wasn't what the guy called me about-- while investigating the car with no parking decal, he noticed a pack of Kools and a lighter on the floor (I guess they have the right to do that, dunno)---In Virginia, it is apparently a misdemeanor for teens under 18 to possess cigarettes, and she has 3 days in-school suspension, and me or BJ (wife, Barabar Jean) have to go down to courthouse with kid to pay $45 fine:O. (They also searched her backpack, but found nada....) Not sure what to make of all this yet--other than kid is paying the @#$@@#$$ fine

It  could get worse, in my part of texas(DFW)  you fight in school  you get a ticket  for disorderly conduct 162 bucks a pop(my kid gets 2 of them every year it seems). My son also had to do 90 days probation over the summer. One time they wrote a ticket I beat on a tech issue so they pulled him out of class the next day and wrote him one for a lessor offence.these tickets are wrote no matter what or who started it, I saw a 10 year old  in court for swearing in class!.  the funny thing is he got such a rep when we transfered schools the last 2 weeks of school they passed him and told him to stay home they would not have to put up with him:lol .On the plus side he's the best fullback you have ever seen.:aok

Daughter was in 3rd grade, one son in 1st, other in Kindergarten.

A 5th grade boy hit my daughter otw home on the school bus.

Upon seeing their sister getting punched, my two boys came tearing over the seats and attacked the 5th grader.  Beat the tar out of the kid.

I get a call from the Transportation Superintendent and threatened with my kids loosing their bus priv's.

I went down and met w/ the super. and the school principal.  I explained to them that I will go home and punish my kids.  They would be grounded for a week, and I would give them a stern talking to.  Fighting at school will not be tolerated by me.  I promised them that they will give them no further problems on the bus.

I also told the super. and the princ. that my kids and I would then go to Toys R Us and they can pick out any toy they want.

fighting @ school = bad thing.
kickin' the crap out of the guy hitting their sister = good thing

Yeah, yeah, I know it's a bit of a mixed message, but I sure was proud of 'em.  The 5th grader a was pretty big boy, and the local bully.

When my daughters were in school one of them was slapped by another student. My daughter then proceeded to dish out an old time thrashing.
The super detained my daughter after school and called me. When I got there it was only my daughter and the super in the office. I asked about the other half of the fight and their whereabouts. I was told that the other student had been allowed to go home without punishment. The old "fighting in school is not allowed speech" came next. I asked the super what he would do if someone slapped him. He said that if on school property he would turn and walk away.
So............I bi*** slapped him. He took a swing at me and I proceeded to dish out a similar thrashing as my daughter had done earlier.
We went home and nothing further was ever mentioned about the incident.
Problem solved. :D

Ah, you never know.  There are still a few people in this world who have a little honor.  You lose a fight, you don't call the cops, period.

If it's true I'll give the guy credit for at least being an upstanding guy in that respect.

True story.
I probably would have just blown it off and chalked it up if it hadn`t been for the fact that the person doing the initial attack was not punished the same as my daughter. There are also always exceptions to every rule and I believe that if you are attacked you certainly have a right to defend yourself as my daughter did.
My Dad had a pretty good rule of thumb when dealing with employees and people in general. He never asked anyone to do anything that he would not do himself.

No Curvie, there was no lawsuit. Different times. If this  happened in current times you would probably be correct in your assumption. People are such wimps now.

My daughter was being bullied by the school "hardman" and 2 of his friends.....she came home complaining about it. Took my daughter into the garden, showed her how to slap em back.....got a call the following day, had to go down to see the headmaster - she'd pummeled all 3 of em.......told the head I'd deal with her...lol...took her out shopping.....;)

On the way out of school, saw this lad and his father.......his dad gave him another slap for picking on girls.........which was nice........(I really really tried not to laugh, honest.......didnt work well tho...)....My daughter never got picked on again.....
