Are you as good a pilot as you thought you would be?
When I first got my hands on a ww2 flight sim (AW in my case). I had certain expectations of my ability. I assumed; perhaps because of my love of airplanes and WWII fighters specifically, that I would be a phenomenal pilot.
I soon found out alot of reading, learning and practice was required!!
so ... where are some of you in your expectations? Do you think you have plateaued? Are you still on your way up, or about where you imagined you would be?
I suppose if you did not start with in interest in WW2 fighters you would not have come into the sim world with as much of an expectation.. but I may be wrong.
I am no where near what I thought I would be all those years ago, but on occasion, if I have been playing regularly I feel like I have flashes of brilliance..usually followed by flashes of my own aviation fuel and a quick trip to the tower.
It may be interesting to see what you expected vs your interest in ww2 aviation.
or has flying in the ww2 sim world created an interest in ww2 aviation outside of the game for you?
-
i dont know how good i am, but i know it took me a while to get the hang of the game way back when i started... anyone who didnt play awe or wbs starts out the same here as a noobie even if they know acm the game has a steep learning curve in flight managment and other factors etc...
in short it was different from what i expected
-
For the amount of time I've played recently (20-35 hours a tour, outside of SEA) and one on one training I've receieved (virtually none), I think I'm okay. Maybe get over a 1.x K/D ratio. I'm okay with that since I generally fly the 109F-4 in the LW arenas. It's hard to really rack up kills in the plane since the MG's are pee shooters and very limited cannon rounds. If I fly a 190A-5 I'm pleased with landing 4+ kills. In a F-4, 2+ is a job well done for me. Plus, if the base needs it, I'll fight beyond the cannon rounds. Meaning if I'm out of cannon rounds and I'm with 600 MG pee shooter rounds I'll stick around to dog fight if I think the base fight or defense is worth it. Same thing with fuel, I'll fight till the last drop if need be. If the fight is good, running home to land X amount of kills isn't worth it to me.
I generally avoid flying all furball planes because it's not my style and doesn't please me. I get a lot more satisfaction landing kills in a 30+ ENY plane as opposed to a La7, Niki, P51.....etc. Especially when I shoot down an La7.

My skill level the past month has dropped significantly after only BnZing this tour. I found my self in the DA today for the first time in weeks struggling to keep my plane from snap stalling. Right now on a scale to 1 to 10 I'm no more then a 7 at best atm. When I was DAing everyday and not BnZ I say I was around a High 8 low 9. IMOP
-
^agreed daing keeps one sharp
-
I', terrible and don't plan on getting any better than that. I don't ever DIE...I get displaced and a new airplane.
I try...but to tell you the truth..anymore...and especially now that I am offline for the next couple of months possibly...I don't care one way or the other.
-
I honestly thought I'd be better than I am at first then I realized how steep the learning curve is. Most of my time spent on the boards is when I'm at work or between herding the 4 kids and three dogs around.
Flip side is I see a slow, gradual, improvement. A plateau here and there but nothing to worry about. One of my major problems is I know this is going to be a long term investment for me because of the core community so I keep upgrading stuff and wind up having to get used to my new equipment all over again.
I'd rank myself somewhere around 'average'

I knew from the first time that I played that I would not be god at this game, even though that I got my first kill on my first filght:rolleyes:. anyways my first airplane that I flew was the C.205, and of course wasn't good at it. I also used the mossie, but that didn't turn out either.
After a lot of listening and practicing, I began to fly the 190's spixteen and the pony, but the 110 is emerging ads my new favorite now.
-
Frankly, and to be brutally honest, I am the suck at this game........I get a few kills here and there.....but get killed way more than killing...lol.....steeep learning curve, but kinda sorta getting better.......(then again, I am old and it takes me longer to remember stuff....I must have crs...lol)

In the DA, one on one? Average.
In understanding and prosecuting the game, I think my squad and I are far above average.
Ability to get a low rank? Far, far better than most. Top 25 in the game when I play. And, to those who choose not to define good by rank, post a sub 10 ranking once, then tell us how easy it is.
-
I'm the best. I really believe that.

I would but I get bored flying with the hord.
I know one top 10 I can beat
and I suck
And thats all I need to know about top rankings

No, I meant without cheating on your second account.
:)
J/K. You are good, just ask you! That's my point. It's not easy.
-
I know I am now lot better than the "average" MA player, but each KotH I attend proves that I'm a mere target drone for the really good players ACM wise... still a long way to go.
I always learned everything on my own, I never was trained, very rarely DA'd and asked almost no questions. But I have now reached a plateau. I see the summit far away in the clouds, I know I won't get there without some serious coaching. Maybe it's time to call a trainer... ;)
-
Good enough to have fun...and not care about how good I am. I leave that to folks that get their ego massage in game. :)

I consider my self "good". But I know I could be much better. The only reason i'm 1/2 way decent is KOTH. I've learned most my "tricks" watching some of the incredible stick that fly King of the Hill. I recall once watching ManeTMP fighting in a KOTH. They were under constant attack, but usually not more than 1 or 2 at a time. But they kept comin' at 'em like a martial arts flick. In about 2min time ManeTMP had killed at least 8 con's. It was awe inspiring.
I wish I spent more time in the DA than I do. I personally feel I still have lot's to learn.
Tour 50
Rank 4
Tour 57
Rank 5
Tour 58
Rank 6
Tour 48
Rank 7
It wasn't easy (actually, it really was) as much as it was BORING. I never flew to not die, but I DID have to run lots of troops, and pork strat's to get my score down.
Difficult? No.
Boring? Very!

I figured I'd get my prettythang kicked a lot when I started to play in summer 2004. I just kept at it until I found my nitch, which unfortuntately is not fighters. I will mix it up on occasion in my Yak.
Sometimes this helps.:D

I'm the second worst pilot in AH. Which is good, because when I started playing I figured I would be the worst. Fortunately I've found a good substitute......I call it fun. I won't tell you who the worst pilot in here is, but maybe they will come forward.
So if you ever get shot down by me, just remember, you died to the 2nd worse stick in the game.....not good.

Old age creeps in slowly, reflexes that always were slow, get slower. Eyesight that was still pretty sharp 10 years ago has dimmed slightly.
In short, I hit my peak probably about 1 year after Aces High Started.
Nowdays on a good week I get to land a 3 kill sortie, and thats ok.
Most of the time I prefer to spend in the TA teaching to flying in the main.
However fri night Squad ops still manages sometimes to bring out the best in me. :)
In some respects I'm way better than I ever thought I'd be.
In others I never did get as far up as I would have liked.
But then family, real life and health issues will do that to you.
Call me happy with where I am as long as I can land a good sortie once or twice a tour.

I've reached the point where I am confident going into any 1v1 fight in the MA regardless of planes and alt, though "confident" does not by any stretch of the imagination mean "victory assured."
I've also reached the point where I feel I no longer embarrass myself against good sticks in the DA, although I've yet to reach the point where I can match them on an equal footing. Especially if they're E-Fighting (it's a concept difficult for me to grasp).
I do wish I'd had the same attitude that I have today towards fighting and learning back when I was in Air Warrior. I spent a few years in that sim, essentially being the scoremonkey runner whiner little 15 year old squeaker wannabe, etc., etc., thought he was good until he went into the DA and got his butt handed to him in two turns (and then never went in again).
I feel I wasted a great opportunity back then. I'm encouraged when I find people struggling not to waste one now.

I have always been interested in WWI and WWII aviation. Aviation in general interests me very much.
I was scared to death the very first time I flew online. It was WB version 1.12 or something like that. I made a kill on my first day but I also had someone showing me the ropes as we went along. I was hooked immediately.
I'm not very good. Have been better when I flew more. I have fun flying in the MA and prefer the early and mid war arenas. Things have changed a lot since I started. I speak of player attitudes and what is spoken/written on the channels. I miss some of the chivalry and fairness of the early days and even though it wasn't perfect, the whole feel of the game was a lot different than it is now.
I keep plugging away at it as I get time and enjoy myself for the most part but I am getting really rusty.

<<<< Only halfway decent when I actually apply all the things I've learned from the great sticks in my squad instead of trimming trees in a furball with the stall buzzer screaming at me. ;)
But I'm still having a great time and meeting great people, so the learning continues.
-
I'm not very happy with where I am, but I expected as much.
I started flyin AW in the Genie days, and continued until near the end of AWIII. When I stopped flying I felt about the same way Vudak does now. I was confident I could win any 1vs1 I came across. Of course I didn't, but I was pretty confident with my skills.
I just started flyin AH2 about 3 weeks ago, and it's been an adjustment. Now every 1vs1 I find myself in, I'm confident, confident I'm going to get whacked :) But it's been great fun flyin again after a number of years off. I was never a "great" pilot, but I did pretty well. I suppose after a few months, I will make the climb back to where I was. (Not as good as I want to be. Not as good as I think I am, but better than allot)
Best regards,

I thought I would be pretty good. Although playing Aces High was much different from the other sims I have played, simply because it was new back then. I actually think I got to my goal or my assumption of where I could get to, but I do think I have plateaued. You get to a certain point where you feel this zone and then that's about all you can give towards the game. You get sloppy here and there after that.
-
I'll have a year in game next month - never having done anything like this B4, I have to say I'm "coming along". The game has a steep learning curve and "seat time" as Rowdy1 says is the key. I've taken some time to try and learn the Corsair (F4U1-D) and am coming along in that aircraft to a point where I probably should try some different planes just to find out their strengths and weakness'.
The most rewarding aspect of the game to me has been the willingness of the trainers and general population to share knowledge - I think we're all learning - from each other! There will probably never be a best, but with continued co-operation, we'll all become better. That is at least my hope!
Regards,
Optiker

Alot of being a "Decent Stick" is experience , knowing how to deal with certain situations because you've been caught in them . I think rank its something that be "gamed ", alot of people turn rank into tedious little milk run's ,along with some spawn camping 8) ( yes ive been in the top 10 ) . I think there should be a stat on how many time people have been accused of cheating ;)

Remember the fable about the fox who got his tail cut off in a trap....
He tried to convince the others they didn't need their tails either. LOL

When I started I knew I wouldn't be too good, but with some training an practice I might get better. I was actually worse than I thought I would be when I started, but after a few weeks in the TA I got better. For about 2-3 months I was slightly improving. Then for a few months I just stayed the same. Then (just a month ago) I decieded I wanted to know more, and with a little reading, practicing, and great advice and help from some great people I actually got better.
In a one on one I can do fairly well. I'll die 50% of the time, but with a wingman, or someone whos just nearby to fly with me, I consider myself to be pretty good.
-
Im alot worse than i used to be just a few months ago.
-
killed soulyss and delirium in one pass last night, that made me feel like I'm getting a lot better!
This game got a lot better when I was able to start reading E states and keeping the SA up. Big furballs still stretch those skills.
I think to improve anymore I'll have to start filming and critiqing myself or ask better sticks for pointers. The TA is a great place to learn what would take months on your own!
-
I'd say I'm average, but I hope to one day be an "uber pilot".... SkyRock is my hero ! :D
In a 1 vs 1 I'm prttey confident, but with my terrible aim it takes too long to kill. Flying with guys like Twin, Delirium, Fringe, and the rest of the 38 guys I've learned alot, and can only dream of shooting like those guys. Unfortunately I don't have the time to devote to sharping my skills, and with old age, the skills disappear quicker, its a never ending battle !

I think until you get really good you have good days and bad days. The upper ranks probably have some bad days as well. There are days where I make it to all my targets, get the Heavies home, and along the way cant miss out of the gunner positions. Then I'll have a day like yesterday where I truly sucked! Hopefully with time the "you suck" days will lessen.
Let me see what happened yesterday.....got sliced and diced by that freaking German rocketship, tried ditching air to close to the front cause I didnt want to fly 10 more minutes, and got whacked by 5 bogies, accidently hit my flaps control while landing a 234 and ended up ditching it, and while in B-17s I got chopped up by some kid who dived on me with his B-17s, "a boy and his drones", which I didnt even know was possible. All you can do is :rofl

Im very good compared to the majority that fly in here
haven't won a Koth..but did win 2 rounds one time
was #1 on Dueling ladder for a bit..great place to leanr
crushed many many skulls : )
learning what each plane is capable of is the Biggest advantage
Reading many many books..then reading all the stats on netaces.org..gave me great info...what can out turn what at what speeds..climb rates.all that stuff
other then that KOTH!!! and DA..serious one on one..same planes really makes you a better pilot
KOTH is a great way to get your SA up..decide wich target is the priority...and upping at caped bases is a great way to learn acms

I have nights (few and far between) that I will consistently land 3-5 kills per sortie. It’s usually while flying with my squad because of aircraft management and being given a direction or mission to achieve.
Then ego and Jack Daniels tells me that I am Spartacus. and I can’t buy a landed kill. (Both lied to me again ) After years of playing this game I will still kill myself with my own bombs diving to low on Vehicles or dive into a horde of swarming Spits knowing I will emerge victorious. Go figure.
Sometimes this game makes me want to pour battery acid into my Alienware computer because IT’S TO BLAME every time I get shot down. Yeah, that’s the ticket.
Makes me feel like Tommy Boy sitting at the dinner talking about Jo Jo the Indian circus boy and his naughty pet.

Actually I made that statement because I know you like to try different kinds of drinks.
And if your like me you probably will stick with one thing for a while. then switch up to something else for a while before moving on to something else yet again.
And if your like me different kind of drinks tend to have different kinds of effects on you
Burbon for example makes me kind of mellow
Wine makes me sleepy
Beer gets me ain a festive mood
Scotch sometimes tends to make me arrogant, argumentative and sometimes downright nasty.
Well at least more arrogant, argumentative and downright nasty more then I normally am anyway.
Anyway. You get my point

Beer makes me really sleepy
Red Whine gets me in a very good mood and gives me a mellow buzz
Gin Tonic gets me drunk but adds a super hangover
Whisky gets me slowly drunk but kinda mellow depending on if i sip it, or poor it down.
Vodka/tequila gets me drunk to the point were i get huge black holes in my memory and always makes me wonder how i ended up were i woke up.

I suck. But I'm here to have fun with my friends, not pound my virtual chest in the cartoon skies.

Kappa got his revenge :cry

I honestly don't recall having expectations.
I've been a WWII aviation buff since I was a kid.
-
I am average. I'd say 60th percentile if I had to take a stab at it.
My score sucks, but that's because I am a vulchers dream. I will keep re-upping until I can get in the air and attempt to bust the CAP until someone comes along and drops ther fighter hangers.
I've surprised myself with how good of a buff gunner I am. But I guess when you have 3 planes worth of fire converging on a plane on your 6 anyone can be good.

Since I'm the worst, that's why pluck is allowed in my squad. We're shooting for mediocraty though :)

Yes you are too easy..so predictable
I insisted on going thru Dueling ladder..To try and keep it alive with active fights..Not just undocumented Chest Thumping
Talking smack?..Like what? example?
So how is it a wuss to fight thru the ladder? I did not become #1 with no action.
I have killed muppets..nothing special reminds me of Shawk a bit...especially when they fly to an area..wingmanned up in some uber 109k series Bnz'rs WOOP DE DOO DA!! Dont get your panties in a bunch..nothen wrong with that..But it doesnt make you "l33t"
Next time im online and you are there..I will accept your challenge. DA DA DA DA!!!
Btw what "was" your name? Cause I never heard of you

Ditto Lux
Good at what though fighter, bomber, GVer, smack talker.
All i want to do is have fun with squaddys, try and learn the different aspects of the game and have an outlet to relieve the days stress and not add to it.
If you are achieving what you want to do in this game, then you are doing good in my book.
So to answer your question i am doing great as i have a blast with the squad, continue to learn all aspects of the game and it does reduce stress for me.:aok

I will surely be looking for you, you are going to get slapped around like a 2 week newb.
#1 doesn't mean a hill of beans to me, I will beat you 2 out of 3 in the planeset if you like.
Last timeI went to the DA, the film recorder still worked in there so I will document it and post the film just so it wont be undocumented chest thumping.
If you would, please post "your" dueling rules in this thread.

You may be the worst in AH, but I'm not in AH right now. When I'm logged in, I take suck to a whole new level.
If I've shot any of you down, you should truly be ashamed.
When I was a kid of about 7 I realized that I was born in the wrong era. I "knew" that I should have been born just in time to be a WWII fighter pilot flying a P-38.
Now I know that I would be one of those guys who don't survive the first fight. But I have fun, and don't give a flying flock of sheep about score or rank. Gimme a furball and I'm happy.

in my own head im some kind of low altitude ninja warrior dogfighting madman but the misses just thinks im a wierdo so im a bit mixed up really.

If I get up and shoot you down, that's nice and I move on to the next fight. If you shoot me down, I take off again.
That's how good I am and I'm sure enjoying it!

Yesterday I was Errol Flynn in a B-17 and this morning I absolutely sucked, having forgotten a basic rule of defending bombers, "Use the sun to YOUR advantage".
Its these ups and downs that are getting to me. It would be far easier to "sorta suck" 100% of the time.
Some of these 13yos are murderous little thugs having cut their teeth on on-line gaming and having done it for so many years.;)
-
I grew up as an airplane nut.
Kind of an 'environment' thing.. dad was in the USAF after WW2, an Uncle flew 17's for the 8th ..I read all the books I could find on the great sticks.
Heck I even took college level aerodynamics to figure out why I was havin a problem with my scale R/C spit 5. (stall wave propagation along an elliptical wing was the culprit)
Then .. I got my first computer.. Atari 400 with 16k memory ..man ..that thing was *awesome* .. then came the Amiga 500 and sub-logic's flight sim.
I was good at flight sims.
LOL.
It took me 2 months to get my first kill in AW.. and that was runnin over $1k/mo in credit card bills doin it. I flew a LOT.
Good against drones is one thing .. good against people?
Well.
I have moments when I manage to do the 'right' thing.. learned from years of doin the worst possible thing you can do over and over and over :)
Of course .. doing the wrong thing is still a blast so I still do the worst possible thing ie: takeoff from a capped field, fly into the bottom of a furball at 3/4 throttle, fly solo to the huge DAR bar, fly a plane that is a challenge to do well in .. all in the name of FUN.
I mean .. if it's not FUN .. why do it?
As for my expectations ..I had no idea how long and hard it would be to actually come close to my expectations when I first took a virtual Mustang into the skies of AW.
Sometimes I am very good.
Most of the time I am not :)

Im not worried about anyone in a 1v1 or 1v2 for that matter...most of the time i am right...sometimes im suprised and it is fun to be suprised...its nice to send someone a
and mean it after a fight...
too many folks in here equate being good with a specific situation...furballing, stratting, basetaking, DA etc. i find that foolish as anyone can focus on one aspect of life and excel but life (and this game) is not just one thing and i find the other view myopic...
I think the best guys are the ones who do it all and do it all well...i personally have respect for Ghi because he has been an outstanding leader, tanker, resupplier, bomber AND is a great base defender and wingman.
Im sure there are guys like Ghi in every country but i speak as a Bish. He will never break the top 10 but i am sure he could care less...i choose to recognize him because it is the last thing he would want and i respect that as well..in fact i respect that more than any of his other skillz...
I would tend to put Lynx in this category as well as a guy that i have flown against...but i am only guessing here....i suspect i am correct...
if i had to send new guys reading this thread a message then it would be this
"Have fun and enjoy the game...if you feel the need to excel in this game to garner recognition then you lack perspective and should quit...If you feel the communications in this game are there to harrass others...then please find another outlet as many of us just log on to have fun..."
As an aside...i have played non-stop thru SINCE air warrior from 1996 -present...there have always great pilots but the honest truth is most of their names i have forgotten...THIS GAME IS NOT A PATHWAY TO ETERNAL RECOGNITION OR IMMORTALITY...it is a game played by a less than a percent of a percent of the world's population...i care as much about who is great in here as i give a crap about who is the best online HALO player...a good piano player is more important to a community then the best AH pilot.
leave your kudos for real life...i.e. have a great career, family and find love and affection and admiration from those that need you and truly know you...
personally i think God squelches 200 and Satan tunes it...

CBass is very offended by this thread. After eading through it and not seeing anyone reference CBass as the greatest thing to occur to AHII since cable modems. Everyone knows CBass is a force to be recon with in all aspects of the game. CBass is not only a tremendous fighter pilot, but CBass can also bomb anything, anytime, anywhere. CBass is also know as a great goon/M3 pilot/driver, both when suppling gv's and bases and when taking them with troops. And don't even get started with CV's. CBass rarely if ever loses a CV under CBass's command. On top of that CBass can sink your CV with bomber's, dive bomber's, PT Boats, tanks, shore batteries, and if CBass feels like it a fighter too.
And all ways remember: All your base/CV/plane/GV are belong to CBass
CBass spanks you for your time and for allowing CBass to rule the MA's of AHII.
P.S. if you took that seriously you need help.

falc i agree whole heartedly with what you say here
except one thing " ... if you feel the need to excel in this game to garner recognition then you lack perspective and should quit..."
and now that i reread it i guess i do agree it was the ...garner recognition... that i first missed, i dont care about recognition but i do want to excel at this game, but that is just me i want to be the best i can be no matter what i am doing. and i know you are the same, in that you want to be the best you can be...
anyways Falc ill see you in the air hopefully in my sights not on my 6,

In short, I hit my peak probably about 1 year after Aces High Started.
Nowdays on a good week I get to land a 3 kill sortie, and thats ok.
Most of the time I prefer to spend in the TA teaching to flying in the main.
However fri night Squad ops still manages sometimes to bring out the best in me. :)
In some respects I'm way better than I ever thought I'd be.
In others I never did get as far up as I would have liked.
But then family, real life and health issues will do that to you.
Call me happy with where I am as long as I can land a good sortie once or twice a tour.
you summed it up very nicely Ghosth......I have found myself having more fun in the AvsA these days rather than flying in the MA.......unless I am flying with my Damned squaddies...... FSO's are a hoot when I find time to make them......as well as KOTHs......
I never thought of myself as very good or great, but I sometimes have a shining gleam of luck every now and then every once in a blue moon ;)
