Title: goodbye
Post by: Oogly50 on August 31, 2007, 12:29:04 PM
Due to the constant blue-screeniness of my computer, and the inability to fix it, I can not play aces high any more.

*gasp*  Yes, I pay with my own money.  And I do not wish to pay for something I can't use.  I was not online very much, so most of you probably don't know me.  I was, and still am, that kid who reads all your posts on the forums, and always has a comment to every post, but apon typing, will forget that comment and leave the thread completely.

I have 7th grade to worry about anyway, since school starts the 4th. (3 days!   )  I will occasionally stop by the forums and leave a worthless post here and there.

I'm trying to get this blue screen fixed, but I'm afraid it's hopless.  I've lost interest.  It's over.

This, is my will.  And with this, I leave a big...

<<<<<>>>>  to AH!

Going into grade 7 and paying for your own account, well I'm impressed.  Keep mowing those lawns and maybe you can get a new pc :D

We need to see if we can't fix this problem of yours.

Did you ever get into your BIOS screen? I've resurrected the thread in the help forums.

yes, when I can finally afford another computer.  I will most likely rush to play Aces High.  Hopefully by then, combat tour will be out!  Of course, I don't think I'll be getting a new computer in 2 weeks.  :D
Title: goodbye
Post by: Oogly50 on August 31, 2007, 12:43:47 PM
why thank you krusty.  I have managed to get onto my BIOS screen, however... I didn't know what I was supposed to look at.

EDIT:  I've also been attacked by a virus that keeps asking me to download an anti-spyware program.  But after reading up on it, found out that it would just kill my computer even further.  When I do actually play more than 5 minutes on AH, I get the little bubble that pops up, and then it shuts down aces high.  I'll be getting rid of that.

And on top of everything ELSE.  A video driver I recently tried to update, supposedly had something 'wrong' with it, and now it uninstalls itself regularly every day or so.  I tried reinstalling it, but now.. it won't install.

My computer's a handfull.

C'mon ooogly...you're what, 13? Now's not to time to learn "throwin in the towel" when things get tough. Like Dichotomy suggests, back up your essential files, wipe your hard drive and do a clean install of Windows. What's the worst that can happen?

Good luck :aok

In all seriousness, if you're the kind of kid that's that young yet pays for their own account, it'd be an absolute shame to lose you.  I'm completely worthless in the technical field, and can offer you no help, but I'm sure someone can.

Good luck!

That virus has been around for years. I had a version that would put up a huge red sign on screen that said, "You have been infected by a virus" and it told me to goto a certain web addy and pay them to fix it. FIX IT!!! THEY"RE the ones who did it... RIPPPP OFFFFFF! The fix was easy as I just did a google search for it. For the love of me I can;t think of the name of that particular virus...

Let me know the name they used and also contact Skuzzy.

Hope this helps.

They claim it's 'virus protect pro'

What it does is pop up an annoying bubble that says:  Your system has detected a number of spyware applications.  Click here for an up-to-date anti spyware solution.'

After doing a google search (gotta' love google)  I found out it was spyware itself, along with some malware...  I will fix this after I do EVERYTHING I have been suggested.  Aye aye aye!  So much work...  I hope it's rainy tomorrow, so I have an excuse to be on my computer for the 9 hours it will take to do all this.

I hope your happy guys, for the next day or two, I won't have a life!

Reformat the harddrive, reload the op sys, and install your drivers again.  Voila, you are back in the game.

Going forward, stay off the porn sites, and you won't get the viruses.

Finally, I am not sure how our best and brightest 7th graders can forget the comment mid typing......  What was I saying?

well, generally I read the entire thread before I post.  And when I have some witty comment for a particular post, I'll continue reading on, and by the time I'm done, I would've forgotten that witty comment.

But believe me, You can't hide from me... I WILL read all your posts.  Just because I'm not posting, doesn't mean I'm not there.

:t :t :t

Also, I don't know how to re-format the hard drive, reload the op sys... or install my drivers!!!

Well, I TRY to install my drivers, but whenever I do, something goes horribly horribly wrong.  And then they forget what they were doing and don't install after I restart computer.

Kind of like how I post.

As for the.. ehem, viruses...

...  It wasn't me?

Oogly,

A Google search on your "virus protect pro" trojan produced a Yahoo link to http://www.superantispyware.com by someone who was also infected by the same trojan and claimed the program deleted it. The website looks legit as they offer a free and "Pro" version.

My own history suggests that the free version may identify virus protect pro but you may have to buy the Pro version to actually remove the trojan. I dunno...but it may be worth a shot.

I got myself infected with one of these malware apps a few years back. The morons who produce this crap ought to be hung by their bollocks.

Keep us posted on your progress.

reformat?

I'm not very computer smart.  I wouldn't know how to do this.  Or maybe I do, but there's just a different name for it.

EDIT:  Okay, so it's a brand new day.  I only have, 2 and a half hours before I go to the renaissance fair with my friends.

to fix my computer, I have had multiple suggestions.

But I'm really tired today, and my problem solving switch in my brain hasn't been flicked on yet.

step one would be to: ________  fill in the blank.  Ah, and yes... I have run a spy ware scan, and a virus scan not too long ago.  I'll run AVG once I leave, And then run Ad aware in a few minutes.

After that I will try to install my video driver.  Hmm, then what else...

Reformat is the process of wiping ALL information from your hard drive, including applications, data and those nasty bugs/trojans you've picked up.

ANY and ALL files/data you wish to keep must be copied and stored. You can store the data on cd's, or ZIP disks, or a flash memory card, which is probably the easiest.

Do you still have your original Windows Operating System CD? Is it XP?
If so, once you have all your files backed up, insert the XP cd into the cd tray and reboot your computer. As I recall, you will be given options and instructions as to how install a CLEAN version of Windows. Clean means your computer will be restored to whatever condition it was in when it came out of the factory.

You will be asked at some point whether to format your hard drive for FAT32 or NTFS, choose the NTFS.

If the computer you're tweaking belongs to mom or dad, ASK 1st BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS!!!!

The reinstallation will take up to an hour, depending on your computer specs. Once complete you can add back your applications (install them as you originally did)

One thing you want to back up is the SETTINGS folder which is in your Aces High folder. I recommend installing a fresh, full version of AH from the HTC download website. Once installed, replace the new SETTINGS file with your old one. Just in case, rename the old settings file "oldsettings" You can leave it in your AH directory folder.

If anyone else has something to add on, please feel free. Best of luck on this project Oogly.

Unlikely. His problem isn't an AH bug; it's a trojan malware program.

Oogly,
as Max as mentioned, if you install the Windows XP CD and reboot the computer, it will ask you  or show you options to boot up using the CD/CD ROM.  Once you boot up with the CD it will walk you through loading setup files, then it will ask you whether to install / repair your OS.

You will be able to format in 2 ways - quick Format or a full deep/slow format.

I recommend the latter one, takes longer but is better in this situation.

edit: it will ask you if you want to delete the existing OS ( Operating System . YES you do want to delete it )

Once you are done with the format, you need to create a new partition ( it will probably be called C:\ )

also format using the NTFS file structure.......

then you will be asked or told to install winXP at this time..

this is not word for word, but is a generalization of how it will go.

the Win XP CD will actually walk you through the setup / format / New Install of Win XP.......

hope this helps

Do you have a CDRW ( CD Burner ) on your computer? if so just use something like NERO  to burn/copy your files you want to save to a CDR disc........

the WIN XP CD does not afford you the benefit of backing up any files.....

you must do the backing up/ copying of files you want to save before you do the format/New OS Install......

Yup, you got it.

Just to make sure we're on the same page, all of your program software needs to be  reinstalled from scrath. Back up files can be transferred back. Do you know how to use Windows Explorer? That makes file transfer a snap.

Gotta scoot for work shortly. May the force be with you. :D

I had to step out for a second, Oogly.

yes as Max said backup files first

then insert WinXP CD, reboot, boot from CD.

then it will give you options to install over existing ( rewrite C:\windows folder )

ask if you would like to install new

but you will need to FIRST, delete/RE FORMAT the hardrvie

then after you do that you can create a new C:\ Partition in the NTSF file structure  and install a New fresh copy of WinXP

then load your drivers for the Motherboard/soundcard/video card etc.....

( if you built your PC, you should have a CD for the Motherboard with drivers on the CD, once you get to this point let windowsupdate take over and download all the necessary updates......

and be sure to download/install the correct Video Driver for your video card......

edit: I guess I should have asked if you have a prebuilt pc ( HP, Compaq, Dell etc...) or if you had a self built PC ( Clone ).if it is prebuilt, then you prob only have what they call a restore disc.........

Good Luck

Oogly, once you've done the full re-install (if thats what you doing), before you put your backed up files on there, virus scan them first fella.........(I know I've said this before, but its important). Make sure you have your anti virus up and running, and any firewall you have as well, as it will help you not get infected again (at least as fast)...I'm working a night shift again, so will be here for a few hours, gimme a holler if there is anything you think I can help with...(sure you'll get all the help you need from the people here !!)

Okay, First off, I don't really know what needs backing up.  I have hundreds of files on this computer, Half of that being files that I don't know what they do.

Also, is there a scan all folders button I can click on?  :D   Would make my mission a little bit easier.

Basically max, What your saying is... I can back-up all my aces high folders and settings I own, but the actual game itself can't be backed up?

Also, this back-up process is giving me a head-ache.

Let's start from scratch.  I insert a blank CD.  I open my files screen (or whatever you call it)  I scan the files I want to back-up.  But here's what confuses me.  Do I drag the files onto some icon?  Do I right click and open a menu that gives me the option to 'back-up file'?

Also, max.  For my AH settings folder, I would re-name the folder 'old settings' So that when I reinstall Aces high, I can open that folder?  How would I sellect it so that Aces High will recognize THAT folder instead.

I could probably figure this out on my own.  But that's not likely.  Even if I could, I wouldn't want to run the risk of turning my computer into a vegetable.  No matter how healthy for me it is.

Post by: gpwurzel on September 01, 2007, 09:07:14 PM
Ok...starting with the backing up of files...easiest way is to choose the files you want backing up, which you can do individually........find the file, right click and "send to" your cd/dvd drive (whichever you have you can write to). This will store them until you bring up a box (ieexplorer kinda deal). You can then write them to disc. Or, you can make a blank folder, copy the files across into the folder...then write that to disc in the same way.

To reuse your old aces high files (after virus scanning).....if you have renamed them old settings, you can copy them across to your puter, check the permission settings are right, then copy them into the settings folder of aces high (you should get a prompt asking if you want to overwrite the files there - as they may well have the same names etc). Click on yes, and jobs a good un

HTH,

Assuming your running xp, when you send files to write to a disk drive, it will pop up a prompt on the bottom right of your puter....if you click on that, it will open up a box that looks like explorer....

oogly,

you want to back up all of your pictures, documents, etc.  You also want to back up anything you've intentionally downloaded off of the net music, videos, ah skins, ah sounds, and so on.  If you don't have enough cd's to do it tell your parents to call me.  I have a spare external hard drive that I'll ship to you no charge and you can use till you're done.  I WANT IT BACK THOUGH ;)

It's really a simple process but a pain in the posterior.  I'd offer to let you ship the box to me and put it right for you but there are members here that are much much more knowledgeable than I am in this area.  Perhaps one of them will step up to the plate?

Anyway...anything I can do to help you out I will.  The world needs more young men like you.

Before you format, TRIPLE CHECK your files. Refresh your memory by going through all your start menu program options (don't start the program, just hover over it and think to yourself "is there anything I made in this program I want to save?")

Almost EVERY time I do a reformat I forget something I wanted to keep. Just make sure you've got all you "can't live without" then proceed.

it sounds like you have smitfraud c. do a virus scan in safe mode, to get there reboot and after the first beeb you should hit F8 this should allow you to start in safe mode, if you have a pc and not an apple computer. once in safe mode run spybot search and destroy it is a free download from the net, this should tell you what you have. if it is smitfraud ,there is a fix you can DL that will clean it up. what I do if I get some thing like this is first find what it is called, then write it down, then google it and then google the name and type fix after it Ie:  Smitfraud fix. you have to go thru a few sites before you might find one that has a downloadable fix. if you can not find a fix then you might need to get some more tools like highjackthis and then follow instructions to the letter to go in and clean out you registry.

OKAY.  Today will hopefully be the day.  (yay)

Here are the things I want to save.

1. All my iTunes songs.  (how would I back these up)
2. Do I need to backup internet exporer or firefox?

Other than this, there's not much crap on this computer worth backing up.  My AH settings folder I can re-do...  I remember exactly how I had it.

However, there's this game I play called blockland, that you need an activation key for.  When I re-install it, I'll need a different activation key (they cost MONEY... AAAH.) Is there some way to save that activation key?  I'll check the files.

ANOTHER thing.  MY DAD CAN'T FIND THE WINDOWS CD!  :(   :furious

EDIT:  Okay, I found a document containing the word 'key' in my blockland folder.  Should I back that up?

for about $160

Or you can contact customer support at the manufacturer and see if they'll send you restore disks for free.

Maybe we ought to try dealing with the removal of the trojan rather than reformatting. Keep looking for the XP disk.

I don't have a printer, so I was going to e-mail it to my dad's computer, but he was flying (he's an airline pilot.)  for 4 days, and then I completely forgot.

Now, I'll email it, and ask him to print it out for me.  You probably won't see me for another 3 hours...  :(  wish me luck.

Word of advice, if the instructions call for changes to your Windows registry, be VERY careful...the registry is the heart & soul of Windows and one incorrect edit can create a world of hurt.

It sais at the end it'll ask me if I want to 'clean the registry'  And it says I will have to click yes...

did you find the name of the trojan,malware/virus? and do the search for a fix? most peeps will reformat and start over, but I find it more fun to remove the little buggers from my system and not losing all my stuff. and as others posted above if you can not find your OS disk you are in deep do do. a lot of these antivirus websites have good step by step instrutions on how to remove unwanted spyware/malware and viruses. follow the steps and you should be ok. good luck to you in your endevour.
