Well you might try doing a google search for Belaric advisor.
Small little program that gives you all kinds of information about your computer and software installed on it.

Then you might try clicking the Start, run, type in dxdiag

This brings up the direct X controls, all the info, etc.

You want to be sure you have NOTHING running in the background that you don't need. Including Antivirus, P2P downloading software, chat programs etc.

Go to the hardware and software forums and search back in the old threads.
There is a wealth of information available.

Rockydog,
This site (http://www.blackviper.com/) may help you.  Be sure you record your settings though before you start.

i am running the same thing and i shut off everything
that is labled user not system say if your name is bob it will have

process                         bob
or
process                         system

i shut off eveyrthing named bob except for

explorer.exe
and
taskmanager.exe

there are some system proceses that i disable because they are add ons liek my printer driver which is luxcos. for a lexmark
and navaps. system cause it is my norton antivirus.

that cuts it down to a clean 19 or 20 proceses which is ideal for me cause i have only 512 megs of memory and a crappy procesor.
also i was running just on the internal gpu or graphics card. i added a cheap nvidia card and really improved my frame rates and visual experience.
still want a new computer though lol

Click on the link in HomeBoys reply. It leads to "Blackvipers" site which has great info on what to turn off and what not to. Its been said you don't need ANY spyware, or antivirus running while connected to the game. This as long as your not running a "chat" program, or connected to any other site WHILE your flying (which also will kill fr in the game)
