Thought the name sounded familiar.  At first I confused him with steve hackett (I know...I know...."who dat?").  Oh well, life is a crap shoot.  Hope the guy is ok.

Ditto.  Took off in his Bellanca and didn't arrive when planned, hope he's well.  I imagine Nevada can be a crummy place to go down in terms of heat/dehydration if he's injured.

Hope for his familys sake that he gets back safe.

Personally tho i dont feel anything when some risktakers gets lost or heads upstairs before his time. They know the risks and im sure that its the way some of them really wants to go :)

Nilsen, he wasn't making an attempt at orbit or mach + flight in his Bellanca, he was just using it to fly from point A to point B.

Or do you argue that someone who takes a risk at any point in their life automatically forfeits it later on from even the most prosaic causes?

If a skydiver is shot by a mugger a year after his jump, you wouldn't feel anything because he somehow brought it on himself?

No, but Fosset is an adventurer that i dont know personally or look up to so i cant honestly say i really care any more than if an average man flips his car and dies. There is no thread started for every other fatality in the world and that is what this is (if he has indeed died) to me.

So i say... its really sad for his family and friends but thats really it.

I'd say a thread about the possible loss of a multi-record holding aviator on an aviation themed bbs is probably appropriate.

I was in Arizona over the weekend and the weather is really not conducive to long term survival out there right now. It is very, very hot.

He bought and rebuilt Craig Breedlove's Spirit of America 3 and was a few weeks away from running at Bonneville...

Be careful Nils. They are moments away from branding you as a librul because you are not running with the herd.

Camille Cleverley is missing. There's a very good chance she has suffered a fate worse than Steve Fossett.  Does she have a thread?

I am wonderin why no flight plan was filed.  Of course that was just on the news and holds no concrete value, but if true...why not.

The short answer is you don't need one.  If you're flying around in your Citabria flying under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) then I probably wouldn't either.  Right now I'm holding out lots of hope it's simply a forced landing and he's sitting somewhere waiting to be found.  Hopefully they'll find him alive.

Don't buy into the CNN/Fox News hubub about not having a flight plan being a big deal.  It's not.  I probably wouldn't especially if just going for a Sunday drive or a short trip I regularly made.

Maybe because he had no real destination in mind.  News channels are reporting he was scouting out locations for his next record breaking attempt at the land speed record.

ack-ack

I lost my virginity about thirty years ago.

Has anyone seen it?  Should I start my own thread?

If you want to help notify people from here (and other's), by all means make one.

I've seen posts like that in this O'Club before.

I didn't know who that is until i googled.  Madeline McCann is still missing too.

As Steve Fossett is a famous aviator, and this is the bbs of an aviation game, i would expect a thread about him.

Everybody is still talking about Amelia Erhardt. And that was in the 30's and she went into the SEA!

Point was that Fossett should be found, since he went down over land. Hope he's alive.

I don't see anything wrong with posting such things on this forum. He is an aviator, a lot of us are interested in aviation. Besides i care about any human being who is in trouble.
