At least her credibility, whatever there may be, is gone for good now.
I mean come on! Being from the south excuses dog fighting? How about slamming dogs to the ground to kill them, or electrocuting them sadistically? Is that all about being from the south?
The southerners I know are horrified at her suggestion.

Of course there is a group mainly in the south of "dog men", who live for fighting dogs. It is a fact, and Whoopi pointing out this fact somehow reduces her credibility how?

Anyhow, nobody who watches that show expects anything articulate outside of the purse/nail polish topic base. Just about ratings... and Whoopie will certainly get them that.

I'm from the South and can tell you that anyone involved in that is looked down upon by the majority of people down here. So yes, she doesn't have a clue what shes talking about.

I knew my college went to crap when they invited Whoopi to be a guest speaker at the Mary and Louis Fusco Distinguished Lecture Series this year. Past speakers have been Rudi Giullani, Colin Powell, Madeline Albright, Christopher Reeves, Bill Belicheck (best of the series IMO), and now Whoopi.

Well Whoopie is not brilliant, but she's smarter than her predecessor.
She at least knows where her bread is buttered. And I bet she doesn't pick any fights with the Donald either.
And as Txmom pointed out, she'll be loud and opinionated. Just slightly classier at it than rosie. Which for anyone silly enough to watch is just fine.

From what I read it didnt sound like she was defending his actions, merely saying why He didnt think it was criminal because he may have always done it. Plus with it being her first day on the job, it wouldnt look good for her black audience to jump all over Vick. Im sure her producers are aware of that as well.

I love the way ppl that are not from the south, know all about us.They love to tell us what we like and what is normal for us.It is real entertaining when it comes from some jounalist that moved here 10 yrs ago from up north,and now believes they got a handle on what it is to be "Southern".
According to a SPCA spokesperson I heard on the radio, there has been a marked decline in dogfighting in the rural south, and a huge increase in urban areas all across the nation. Rap/Hiphop music has many labels that include pit bulls, and mean dog images, something to think about, when the old finger starts to get pointed.
Location/ history does not absolve one's actions.

She didn't say that nor did she infer that.
She was commenting on how Vick seemed a bit slow to realize that what he was doing (dog fighting and torture/killing of the dogs) was wrong.

Oh I agree with you that Vick as well as his cohorts knew that what they were doing is illegal. They just didn't think it was as big big a deal as the rest of us. Apparently where he grew up dogfighting was considered a sport, hence his participation.
Some people just do things because they can get away with it as the prosecution rate is low or nearly nonexistent.
Drugs, prostitution, gambling, tax evasion, etc., people do sometimes because it has always been done. Kind of the environment/culture they were brought up in.
Now don't go putting words in my mouth here as I'm not excusing dog fighting at all. It's stupid. Vick got what he deserved.

Although I am now in Wyoming, I have lived 45 years in the Deep South and I can state with absolute certainty that anyone saying that "it's a Southern thing" is merely stating their abject ignorance.
How many years has Whoopi lived in the Deep South? How many years have you, MT? Or is this something you just read about somewhere?
I think I smell some uninformed prejudice here!

She wasn't stating that it was a 'southern only thing'.
She stated that where Vick came from it isn't unusual.
Her last sentence includes the South when she states "the entire country appreciate".
Seems there is a Whoopi witch hunt going on reading more into what she actually said.

You can suppose whatever you want. The guy they interviewed saw the killing of "poor performers" as doing a favor to the breed. I got no problem with your complete inability to see an issue from other perpectives though. Makes the world a simpler safer place to ignore.

There is a difference between putting an animal down in a humane manner vs doing so in a cruel manner. Even if you do not have access to the resources a vet would have you do not have to use the methods that vick used.
This isn't really a cultural issue as there is more than enough information transfer to allow anyone in the US to understand that dogfighting is illegal. I've met a couple folks involved in it. They know damn well it's illegal, they just want to continue anyhow. They know that they may face prosecution but they don't care. Rather selfish actually.

The point she's been trying to make is that Vick grew up in the atmosphere of dog fighting being a sport, where dogs used for fighting are commodities, things, tools, not loving, loyal pets. She never once excused or condoned dog fighting or Vick's participation in it.

The argument of dog fighting being only a southern thing was never an issue.
There is dog fighting going on in California also. The article even states that it is no longer a southern only thing. It still goes on in the south though.
You have yet to prove that Vick wasn't exposed to dog fighting at a younger age.
It probably is rare for a professional athlete to 'change their colors' once they become professional. They just happen to have a lot more money at their disposal to do the things they've always done.
Vick happens to fall in that group.
The main point of Whoopi's comments was she was pointing out how Vick was slow to realize how bad dog fighting and his treatment of his dogs was a bad thing. How what Vick thought wasn't too bad, the rest of society (including the south) would look down upon.
Hardly the comments of an "idiot" as she was spot on.
Like I said, this thread is a witch hunt.

You make make good point Saburo. I may be mistaken in my initial take. Vick may have indeed grown up in a pocket of dog fighting culture. While a culture as a whole shuns such behavior, there are indeed, small groups of cockfighting , dog fighting, etc... groups all over the country, including the south.
