Title: Cursed By My Own Performance
Post by: rpm on September 04, 2007, 08:26:24 PM
I don't design rocket engines or artificial hearts but I put forth the effort as if I was. In the last 30 days I have been sent to work in every store in our chain. I live 5 minutes from the store I normally work in.  Tonight the owner calls me up "Oh, please I need you to go fix blah, blah, blah..." So for the next 30 days or so I am commuting 60 miles each way to fire then hire and train someone to do the job. (No extra pay mind you)

The guy squeezes 6 cents from every nickle, screws his customers blind and I am doing his dirty work for him. I'm not even the District Manager but I'm doing his job. Maybe if he paid a decent wage instead of always lowballing he could hire some decent people.

I gotta find another job.

Rule #3

If your going ot do the job. Get both the position and the cash the job is supposed to come with or dont do the job.

Find yourself a similar position elswhere then tell your boss to either give it to you or your gone.

The only reason he gets away with it is because people let him get away with it.

Your being played for a tool plain and simple.

If your going ot do the DM job and you want the DM job then tell him so.
But dont just sit there and say nothing but  "yes sir"

Oh and make sure you get the title to go with it.
The money is good. But the title can be just as important in the future for future employment elswhere.

Its one thing to say you were doing the job of a DM
But its much better to be able to say you WERE the DM
Even if you were a lousy one it sounds more credible then saying
You just did the job of one but you were great at it.

60 miles? Is that all?  With football and working onsite in Issaquah, I put in 500 miles a week, even working 50% virtual! 12,000 miles in the new FJ in just 6 months. :(

Well, duh. I don't want the DM job, I don't want the job I'm doing now (which also would fall under the DM's duties). All I want is my quiet little Manager's slot and no overtime. I'm supposed to be semi-retired, not trying to climb the ladder.

I seem to remember you going through this before you became the store manager a few years ago, right? I think I advised you to keep your nose to the grindstone, not complain and you got promoted. Are you certain he isn't testing you to be the next district manager?

Never complain to anyone, even those outside the company. Things have a funny way of getting around.

I think you have two choices:

1. "Message to Garcia" and see what happens.

2. Look for another job while you're doing this. Do what is asked of you and you'll have a great reference.

Added: Just saw you last post... never mind. ;)

What did he say when you told him you just want to do your job now with no overtime?

I've done the commute thing for years. Just tired of doing it (and my Dodge Ram gets around 11MPG:eek: ).

Thanks. Rolex:)  Like the title says, I did the job too well. I reminded him of our agreement on work and my duties. Let me tell ya, this guy could sell ice to Eskimos.

If you dont want it. Then dont do it.

Tell him the score upfront.

Dred, I could just walk out and quit. But, I don't have anything else lined up at the moment. Never quit unless you have something better lined up.

He seems to value you highly so just let him know that you either get your "quiet little Manager's slot and no overtime" or you will start looking for another job. :)

I feel your pain, these days it seems people with more skill, just get more work..

I volunteered 1 time to work from midnight to 6am doing a node split so we could double our HSI bandwidth.. then suddenly i get shoehorned into doing any and everything that has to with fiber optics..  whoever is ACTUALLY on call that week, or any given week, goes squeaker and my nextel blows up because they have run into something that isn't a brain ded obvious fix.. so basically im on call ALL THE TIME.. but i don't get any hours when these yoyos bug me... because im no rolling a truck.. just yackin on the phone..  so thats free i guess, like I have anything better to do...  in fact I got shot down yesterday because one of my illustrious co-workers had return no coming in to a module....

but at the end of the year, after being the "go to guy".. when I ask for a bigger raise guess what..  well i haven't been  officially trained on these things.. i didnt go to a class.. which isnt even offered mind you, so they cant really offer me anything extra, because there is nothing on paper to substantiate an additional X%.. but hey, keep up the good work..  SUCKER

so yea, in "the day" you stand out  because you have above normal skill, you are recognized and promoted.. so that you can be in a position to use your skills in a more effective way than being just another "drone"..

these days.. your still a drone.. you just do the queens job.. while she is in Costa Rica or some such postcardesque "destination" pouring her 225 pound of chewed bubble gum in cottage cheese into a 2 piece thats just BEGGING for mercy.. Yea, way to gross out the locals lady..

Who manages your store when you're gone, rpm? Too bad you couldn't find some young whipper-snapper who wants to climb the ladder to make the trip and tell your boss that he'll get a 2-fer. The new place gets sorted and a new potential manager gets some experience doing it, but you'll make sure he doesn't get in over his head. You'll supervise him throughout over the phone and visit once a week.

You've mentioned about no OT, no extra pay, gas, etc, so the question is: If the money was right, would you do it? He's being unreasonable if he isn't paying you for at least travel time and expenses. Re-negotiate. You both need to be flexible because your original deal is by the wayside now anyway. Ask him to rent you a car and pay you 2 hrs travel time each day. He can write off the car expense anyway.

Rolex, the funny thing (yeah, real funny) is I just got a raise last month. I could go in demanding more money for this but I would look like an a-hole.

You have to know this guy I work for. I know how his mind works, he's always 3 steps ahead of the game. He saw this coming and greased the tracks by giving me a small raise last month (2 weeks ago actually). Now, at the last minute he wants me to go do his dirty work and fire this shmuck and train a replacement. Shouldn't the shmuck's supervisor do that?

Who's running my store? Me, over the phone and on quick hits when I come home. Luckily I have a good crew and I can do my paperwork online.

I racheted back my workload after my heart surgery. I just can't handle the stress like I used to. This had better not screw up my vacation plans. I got NASCAR tickets.

Yeah, the schmuck's boss should do it. He's the schmuck for not stepping up to do it.

I'm sure you'll be able to find some way to grin through this. Maybe finalizing all the big Belize plans during the drive. :) Good luck to you.

I don't know about smart and I highly doubt the validity of the description.  you cannot cheat people and remain viable for long.

success in a small business is the result of providing goods or a service people are willing to pay for and are will to return to you for.
