Howdy-
Since I got 2.11, it's made a new cache every time I've started the game. You know, that message that says "this only happens the 1st time you run a new version or change certain graphics settings". Well, even if I don't change anything at all but just play the game, I still have to wait on a new cache set-up before I can even get to the 1st clipboard menu.

I'd grab my settings folder and save it, uninstall and reinstall the game, replace the settings folder and see how that works for you. That's weird though.
-
Yeah, it's probably due a reinstall. But that's such a pain--I'd rather make HTC work at figuring out why it's happening :)
-
Heh. Probably a corrupted file somewhere...

is your settings folder stuck on "read only "?

So it was! You're a genius. Thanks.
I wonder how that happened......

Yeah, me too. That's not something that just sorta 'happens'.

So I thought until now. But every time I reboot or restart the computer, all the AH folders get set to read only. Doesn't happen to any other folders that I've checked so far, but I haven't looked very hard.
I've got AH installed in a non-default directory. It's just in its own folder instead off c:\ instead of c:\program files\. Maybe that has something to do with it. However, this hasn't caused any problem before, and as you can see by my date registered, I've been here since the initial AH1 beta.
Anybody got any more genius suggestions for me? :)

The folders/files being arbitrarily changed to read-only is usually due to either Norton Security or McAfees software.

the game making a new cache also happens if you use a out dated version of the skin viewer

That's nice to know. I have 2.10something which I assume is outdated, since the game's got a higher number these days. Where can I get the new version?
PS: there needs to be a link for the current version of the skin viewer on the "Content Creation" download page, with the terrain editor. I've always thought it strange that this is not the case.

Hmm, I've always had Norton (just AV, never SW) and it hasn't done this before. So either Norton's recently put some new feature/porker or it's a problem with the old skin viewer like Rogerdee said.

I get calls all the time about problems with Norton Security. The latest one blocked the game's ability to auto-download the latest patch. Had a ton of calls about that one.
And there are a few anti-virus programs out there which have been known to mark files and folders read-only.
And yes, using an older skin viewer can cause manisfest the issue as well.

Thanks for the help. I'll look into Norton, but in the meantime, what is the latest skin viewer, where can I find it, and how come there's never been a link for it on the "Content Creatiion" download page?

Only people interested in skinning need the skin viewer. Putting it on the standard download page will cause many people just to download and install it without understanding what it is for.
The new skin viewer has not been built yet.

Well, the same can be said, with IMHO more justification, about the terrain editor. Only people interested in making maps need the terrain editor, there seem to be fewer of them than skinners, and improper use of of the TE can cause more problems than just an old skin viewer porking your cache. Yet the TE has its own download page, in the "Content Creation" section. So why not put the skin viewer on that page, too? That way, unless folks were really interested in making content, they wouldn't download the skin viewer.
The new skin viewer has not been built yet.
Why is it that a new skin viewer always lags weeks behind a game update? As soon as a new plane comes out, there's always a big rush to start making skins for it. And if it's known that old viewers cause cache problems to at least some people, and often don't work well with new planes anyway, why not update both the game and the viewer at once?

Bullet head i think your problem is the skin viewer.if the game plays ok a couple of times after you have first made the cach then you use the skin viwer.the game will then rebuild the cache again.
i take it you hae started skining again

That's exactly how it's working, or rather not working, for me.

Yup. I'm a big fan of the B-25.

Awesome, what skins are you going to make? Or is that a secret?

I have made some nice tutorials on the TE and the OE. Lots of people now understand how to use the majority of the functions available in the TE and the OE making it less likely that there will be major screw ups.:aok

Not a secret, just off-topic here. Check out the "Red Wrath" thread in the Custom Skins topic.
