Putin Grow Up........ :p
British air force Tornado fighters were reported Thursday to have intercepted eight Russian bombers as they approached UK airspace.
Four F3 fighters were scrambled from Leeming airbase in Yorkshire, northern England and the Russian planes diverted before entering British territory, according to Sky News.
There was no immediate confirmation from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in London, but the Russian planes were reportedly Bear Tupolev-95 planes, which can carry nuclear and Cruise missiles.
The incident comes after Britain's new Eurofighter Typhoons were scrambled last month to shadow a Russian bomber heading for the UK, which was revealed by the MoD. A similar incident was also reported to have occurred in July.
The interventions coincide with Britain recently announcing that it had agreed to a US request for Menwith Hill monitoring station in Yorkshire to be used as part of its controversial missile defence system, which Russia has opposed.
It also comes as bilateral relations have deteriorated over over Russia's refusal to extradite a former agent, which Britain wants to put on trial, accused of poisoning dissident Alexander Litvinenko in London last November.
The dispute led to deportation of four Russian diplomats that was countered by a tit-for-tat move by Moscow ordering out four British diplomats.
Sorta worrying even though it could be considered trivial.

Reading this reminded me of Russia planting the flag on the ocean floor and claiming that land.
So, when The USA planted the flag on the moon does that mean they own it?
I am feeling left out, no Bear bombers over Canada yet. Lazy Russians.

Next time let them flying into British airspace and blow them the **** out of the sky. :)

Sure, and then you will get on this board and badmouth the Brits for doing it.

Looks like the Russians are testing how far they can go before being intercepted.

I think it is quite amusing that the ruskies send over Bear's to intimidate people.
They will be sending formations of IL2's next with "Dont mess with Russia, or we will use these on you" signs.
Formations of TU-160's would be far more impressive, if they ever get enough off the ground.
-
US had another problem...a Bear entered our airspace...but F15s came to escort them out.
-
This has become standard these days. usually we scramble our F16s and keep them company until the brits take over down south. Hopefully its gonna do wonders for the airforce budget :aok
That beeing said im glad russia is finally starting to train and invest in their military. It is a much better scenario to have them well trained, equipped and in good spirits so they can both offer a counterweight to NATO expansion, and not be a danger to themselves. NOBODY wants to see a military such as theirs full of disgruntled troops and officers that needs to make a living doing shady stuff.
Their bite is still massive so dont get fooled by saying their military is in ruins.
-
NATO expansion is bad because?
-
Because its stomping around in the backyard of Russia, but you knew that.

For those who don't feel threatened by forces with a history of aggression I can see how this expansion might seem unnecessarily provocative. I think those who have felt the oppression of that aggression feel differently about a pact that provides for their common defense.
-
That is one way of looking at it.
I have been an avid supporter of NATO, but in the last few years i have completly changed my mind just as the world has changed.
-
Yep bad ol' NATO! They are actually stomping around in the Baltic areas and forcing, I say FORCING countries to join up since they have been able to get the peace loving and benevolent Russian forces out of their borders where thay have been throwing daily parties for the people who actually were born there. Bad BAD NATO!!

Who really benefits when these nations join NATO?
-
The only reason why i am supporting NATO is that Croatia is very soon to enter it.And because of that we are buying new planes.Hopefully gripens over old f-16s.
Actually, to enter NATO Croatia couldn't choose to buy Russian planes...

You are on to something Croduh

Good question. I figured from your first mention of the NATO expansion that you assumed the US was expanding it's power base simply because it is power hungry and seeking world domination. Perhaps everyone who values democracy and freedom benefit when those are expanded?

its very dangerous, he is playing with the fire. But for them it looks
like he is like a holy man, allways doing the right thing lol.

Bush has done little in that area compared to Reagan bring down the Soviet Union. Many of us are old enough to remember those days quite well and the possibility of a "bloody nose" was far more real then than today.

That is not what i had in mind actually.
The question remains. Who really benefits, and in what way? ;)

My answer remains, everyone who values democracy and freedom benefits. When others learn to enjoy freedom then everyone's freedom becomes more secure.
-
All these new members already have freedom and democracy. Nato does not protect those values any better.
Who benefits from these nations joining NATO?
-
I used to be a huge fan of NATO, but Canadians have been dying at a rate of something like 3 times greater than their NATO allies in Afghanistan for a while now. Not such a huge fan.

Might want to rethink that

Security! They benefit because if Russia decides it's in their strategic interest to invade one or two in order to protect them from themselves. They might as well lob missiles at Washington, London, Paris and Berlin because an attack on one is an attack on all.
You don't honestly think Norway is protected by a few F16's do you? What if Sweden wanted Norway back? (An unlikely notion, it is true) Would you prefer to fight alone or with the USA etc on your side?

They have freedom and democracy which is why they were invited to join NATO. They joined so they could keep it.
