A T-37 crew from here flew up there for the show.  I'll have to ask them WTF happened.

Two of the most experienced Formula 1 pilots collided approaching a pylon.  Don't know the exact circumstances/geometry of the collision, but I'd have to guess it was during a pass, where the inside aircraft drifted out and the outside aircraft was pulling harder...possibly.  Like Wolf said, we'll find out tomorrow exactly what happened, but yeah--its been a strange week indeed...

I was there for all 3 deaths. Didnt catch any on film, but I had talked to all of the pilots. They were all good friends of my pilot. I sat in on the breifing saturday, and the mood was somber, but all the pilot were unanimous in that they wanted to keep racing.

It's an extremely hazardous thing to do. I respect the pilots for doing this style of racing and I hope it continues. By it's nature it will take lives and there is damn little anyone can do about it.

RIP to the fallen, may they have fair skies and tailwinds forever.

Somes is out of the hospital I beleive. I just talked to my pilot who hung about the races a bit longer, and he says they havnt determined an exact cause for any of the three accidents. No official cause anyway, but the unofficial verdict, is the first crash was pure pilot error. He got into a tight spot and made a bad decision. The second was wake turbulence, and there was no way he could have recovered. Its still anyones speculation as to who encroached on the last collision though.

I talked to one of the crew members for the Formula 1 pilot who was in the 3rd position of that race.  He said Hubler was on the Pole, with Somes outside.  As they approached the first pylon, Somes allegedly cut too hard to the 1st pylon, clipping the tail of Hubler's plane.  Hubler obviously lost control and hit the ground.  At least, that was the view from the third place aircraft...

Hubler lost his left wing, not his tail. I was in the Hitstoric section, so just parallel to the accident. I couldnt tell who pulled where though, some say Somes pulled to tight, others said Hubler pulled into Somes.

Interesting.  That means there was some strange geometry present then.  I guess we'll have to wait for the NTSB report to be sure.

They were parallel to each other at the moment of collision. It appears Somes' canopy hit the bottom of Hubard's left wing, breaking it off, and shattering Somes' canopy.

His engine was putting out smoke before takeoff, but he decided to go ahead anyway. On takeoff, the engine apparently quit, and for some reason, instead of landing straight ahead, he tried to make a 90 degree turn to the right to land the other way. While doing so, he stalled and crashed.
