Title: Time to call it quits
Post by: rodak on September 17, 2007, 11:15:12 AM
Hi all.  I just wanted to say goodbye to all my aces high friends for the time being as it seems my computer just can't run smooth enough to fly with yas anymore.  Hopefully I'll be able to get a faster machine in the future but until then I just gotta call it quits because when your biggest enemy becomes frame rates instead of other planes it just gets frustrating to fly.

A big to all my aces high friends... You all know who you are and it's been great fun     :)

Before you quit outright. What kind of setup do you have.
Perhaps we can tweak it

Before I got my now out of date screamer.

I played for 3 years with a:

800 Mhz P3
384 MB PC133 RAM
GeForce DDR/DVI

I had XP Pro and found that SP 2 added 4 Processes.   I kept the Processes at 14 with AH running with SP1.

I also used Drivers from 2003 in the archive.

One issue with older Dells are their proprietary motherboards, which means most others won't fit their case. You are probably limited to a 2X AGP slot, maybe a 4X at best. Naturally, that old gal won't have a PCI Express slot either. You 9600XT card is designed to utilize an 8X AGP slot, so your MB is the choke point. At the least, you should consider adding another 512 MB of RAM.

Another option is to dump the Dell MB and case, buy a new MB (with 8X AGP slot) and P4 processor. You can move all the drives, sound and video cards to a new case (with at least a 400 watt power supply). That is probably the least expensive upgrade I can think of that can get you back into the game. Any computer shop can do this for a few hundred dollars. I did exactly this with my wife's 2002 Dell. I can run AH2 on it with a frame rate limited only by the refresh rate of the monitor.

My regards,

Widewing

for one thing put at least 512 more ram in it and put at least a 256 video card in it. cost is about 200 dollars. cheaper than a new comp. :aok
