Title: SuperGel
Post by: Rolex on September 19, 2007, 12:08:21 AM
A company called Geltec has some new gels with some amazing damping characteristics. They dropped an egg from a 7 story building onto it without breaking the egg.

Here is a video: Link>> (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u171-byIUV4)

The guy with the mic doesn't believe it will work. He asks the president if it really won't break and the president says that it's fine, no problem. He still doesn't believe him, saying something to the effect of, "Here's the first try..."

They dropped a champagne glass later, and it didn't break.

but if you look carefully at the end you will see the yolk is broken.
evidently it can protect the outside. But not the inside

 Umm alright.. How do you suppose it should go about protecting the inside of the egg?

More dampening still.

Wow, that's pretty cool... Could this be any use in cushioning space/planet probes' landing?

You cant.
Thats the point.
As far as humans are concerned
What good is protecting the outside if you cant protect the inside

Dred just dampen it some more.  If you're going to have an apparatus on the scale of human bodies, you probably have enough room/resources to allow for more dampening, e.g. with a bungie sort of elasticity built into whatever contraption the human body is traveling in.
